Five Heart Podcast Episode 104: Husker Football Moving Forward

In what will probably the first of two episodes this week on the Five Heart Podcast, Hoss and Hooch talk about some of the players departing from the Husker football program and who we (okay, really, it’s Hoss) think will step up in the future to take those spots.

The list goes like this:

  • Interior Offensive Linemen
  • Bryce Benhart at Right Tackle
  • Replacing Devine Ozigbo
  • Replacing Stanley Morgan Jr
  • Defensive Front Seven
  • Inside Linebackers
  • Pass Rush
  • Dynamic defensive Schemes/Calls.

We also talk about the progression of Adrian Martinez, and perhaps what we can expect from him in the future.

Also discussed, a tease about conversations later this week regarding Nebraska basketball and volleyball.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 103: Previewing Husker VB vs Kentucky

On this week’s episode, made available with hours to spare ahead of the regional semifinal match, Greg is joined by Ty Peteranetz to discuss the 2018 Husker VB squad.

How did this Husker volleyball team come together? They certainly weathered the storm of a tough stretch of action in the country’s best volleyball conference. It’s a fact. Of the eight games in the regional semifinals taking place today, six of them include Big Ten teams. Suck it, SEC.

With graduation looming for all-American Mikaela Foecke and others, who does Ty foresee stepping into the top-dog role next year, and who’s already making a name for themselves on this young Nebraska squad?

What did the Huskers do right down the stretch and what do they have to do to win the Minnesota Regional that includes a Gopher squad that has beaten our beloved Big Red twice?

And how is Ty doing as the dad of a newly crowned one-year-old, and how are we handling those odd child smells?

It’s all in this episode of the Five Heart Podcast.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 102: We’re Full of Self-Examination

Well, Nebraska football season is officially over. Time to “Win the Damn Off-Season” as Hoss would say. So in this episode, Hoss, Jon, and Hooch talk a little bit about the game at Iowa. We discuss the season of “what could have been” and what eventually happened.

We talk about the silliness (ie: stupidity) of the Iowa Marching Band Member who lied (I mean, the video evidence is there) and said the Husker football team did not participate in the “Wave” to the patients at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital after the first quarter. It’s a long-standing tradition, cute gesture that Kinnick Stadium fans, the Hawkeyes, and opposing teams have practiced since all the way back in 2017. And Hoss raises a good question (one Jerkeye fans may have to face on Black Friday 2020).

Some Huskers were recognized by the Big Ten coaches and media for the accomplishments they had this season, led by departing senior Stanley Morgan Jr. So the guys go down the list of honorees, and conclude that the future is bright.

Speaking of the future, if you haven’t yet, check out the pinned tweet over at The Five Heart Podcast Twitter and vote in the poll about how Jon Damn Johnston should spend the off-season. Should he be a “rah-rah” sunshine pumper or should he play the role of the old man, contrarian curmudgeon?

Nerds United Episode 114: Post-Thanksgiving

Hello and welcome to a brand new Nerds United. We sure are happy you’re here.

In this week’s episode, Mike and Greg talk about their Thanksgiving weekends and their awesome families. Another of your favorite Marvel shows is leaving Netflix, which we all anticipated. Fuller House is still on the streaming service. But that Disney App is starting to look pretty inviting. However, we’re still pretty sure there’s one 1946 movie that will remain buried in the vault.

Hear Nickelback cover a Metallica song, and hear the guys talk about the Joker movie, and how Mike says the DC Cinematic Standalone Universe is still unproven.

“You’re a wizard, Harry.” Famous words from a famous giant (or giant-like man). But what are some ridiculous things that Hagrid could have told Harry Potter that would have been just as believable (if not just as odd) as telling a ten-year-old boy that he’s a wizard?

Thanks to everyone who has picked up a shirt. Want to be one of the cool kids? Get your shirt here.

Nerds United: Episode 113: Turkey Before Turkey

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!! Surprisingly this is not Greg typing this. It is I, your co-host of the year. You are welcome everyone. Greg said I had to type something out and make it at least 150 words. I said, “No problem my main man Gregorino,” or something to that effect. I guess I should actually talk about the podcast now since Greg is watching what I type…well we talked about Thanksgiving episodes, Stan Lee’s unfortunate passing, high school stuff, Secret Wars, Super Secret Wars (I don’t think that is the actual name of the comic but it works.) Oooh, I should make a comic called Super Duper Secret Wars. How many words is this? This is harder than I thought. Pretty sure Greg will not let me do this again. Ok, 129 words so far. I need 150. By the way, does anyone read this really? And if so, are you single and female? Just throwing it out there.

And buy a shirt.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 101: Iowa Hate Week

This Friday. 11:00am. The turkey is digested. The pie plates are empty.

It’s time to go to war.

IOWA HATE WEEK!

But first: Nebraska used the leg of Barrett Pickering to defeat the visiting Michigan State Spartans 9-6 on a cold and snowy day in Lincoln. Going up against a stiff defense from East Lansing, Nebraska did just enough to get the win on Senior Day.

And then…we talk Iowa. Nothing good about Iowa. Iowa as a state is like Kansas except worse. So Hoss, Hooch, and Jon talk about the rivalry with the Hawkeyes. how long have the hard feelings existed between the two fanbases?

And our Black Friday predictions.

If you enjoy what we do here on the show, consider picking up a shirt from our shirt store. New designs will be coming in all the time, so check it out.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 100!!! Bah Gawd! That’s a winner!

So there I am, watching my niece’s kindergarten basketball game last Saturday morning. You know the type. They have fifteen-minute halves where the clock doesn’t stop. They don’t keep score. And it’s all about going out and having fun. No real rules. I was having a mild anxiety attack as kids were running the ball up the court. But hey, it gives them something to do after farming season (my sister married a farmer and they live in a small farming town…nice town).

So there I am, watching my niece’s game and I’m repping the Big Red. I have my Huskers hoodie on that Brett Baker delivered to me in person three years ago when he and his daughter Jessica went to the Nebraska-Illinois game in Champaign. You remember the one. The one we lost. [Expletive Deleted]. My dad says, not prompted at all, something along the lines of “I’m taking Illinois today.”

I laughed. Not mockingly. Not boisterously. Just laughed. Then after the game, my son and I went to “grandma and grandpa’s” house as my mom made pancakes and bacon for everyone. I watched a little of the game before and after breakfast, then helped my dad do some winterizing stuff outside.

Now I tell you all of that to tell you this. I DVRed the game and started watching it Saturday night. I finished watching it Wednesday evening before we started recording.

In this milestone 100th episode, we talk about the big win over Illinois and why Adrian Martinez and Devine Ozigbo are deserving of their conference accolades this week. We talk about science, but I can’t remember how we got on that topic.

Image result for science gif

And Patrick Gerhart joins us to talk about Nebrasketball’s hot start, including the win this week over Seton Hall!

Jon also has a story or two from his undergrad days and my son looks like he’s going to pee on his bed. So it was a wild and crazy night!

Nerds United Episode 112: HE’S A SKRULL!!!

It is time for a brand new episode, back home in the kitchen of the Nerds United Lair!

But fear not, we’re bringing the spirit of 4204 Main Street Brewing Company (or should we say spirits…we’re drinking) with us.

In this episode, we’re talking about Wolverine: The Long Night, which completed its ten-episode run of season one this past weekend on Apple Podcasts. We also talk about Secret Invasion, Heroes in Crisis, Brad Meltzer’s Justice League run, Superman Red Son, and a lot more.

At the end of the episode, we also give away a copy of The Comic Book Story of BEER!

If you like beer and you like comic books, you will love this book! It’s chock full of great information!

Enjoy the podcast on your favorite podcast app or check out the live stream on the Facebook page!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 99: So Close Against OSU

We already played the “moral victory” card. This was a loss. But hot damn, it was the best loss we’ve seen this team take in some time. It was fun to watch as a game. It was more fun to watch Urban Meyer squirm as the outcome was still in doubt late in the contest. It was really fun listening to 100,000 fans booing the home team as they headed to the locker room at halftime.

Listen, friends. We’re close. Closer than any of us thought. And as ridiculous as it may have seemed a few weeks ago, we still have the possibility of making a bowl game.

Up next: Illinois. And there’s no way the Fighting “We Don’t Know What to Call Ourselves” will win this weekend!

Nerds United Episode 111: Hanging Out at the 4204 Brewery

You read that right, true believers! In this very special “Field Trip Edition” of the podcast, Greg and Mike are hanging out and recording from the 4204 Main Street Brewing Company Taphouse/Production Brewery. In other words, if you’re in Illinois, Missouri, or Kansas and you see a six-pack of a delicious 4204 brew, it was brewed right behind where we were sitting.

We were very fortunate that the good people at the brewery, from the owners to the Head Brewer Keith to Deja the Taphouse Manager and provider of fine ales and lagers, opened their doors to us. Because we like beer. And they have beer. It’s a perfect symbiotic relationship.

So the first thirty or so minutes of the podcast, we were actually streaming and recording live on Facebook. Three people. Two microphones. We’re podcasters, not math geniuses. Anyway, that first half hour was spent with Keith learning all about the beer making process and also trying different beers. You’ll notice in the featured photo that Greg finished his beers. He ended up bringing two growlers home, including the Tickle for his wife.

After we let Keith get back to work, Mike and Greg talk about some comic book topics, including Return of Wolverine, Heroes in Crisis, and Cry Havoc.

There’s a giveaway we’re working on. It is for The Comic Book Story of Beer. Fitting, right? Let’s do this. If you read this, share the post on Facebook. I’ll enter all who do into a random drawing and the winner will get the graphic novel delivered to their front door!

That’s pretty much it. Enjoy the show, and thank you again to Keith, Deja, and everyone who helped make our trip to 4204 Brewery possible!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 98: 2-0 with Ohio State Up Next

Hey folks, we’re one win shy of a winning streak! And since we’re not superstitious, but just a little stitious…

Image result for major league winning streak gif

Granted, it was a win against Bethune-Cookman. But the team really looked solid in that first half. And that second half sure did happen, too!

In this episode, Hoss is out. Jon Damn Johnston is in his chair and TALKS ABOUT THE OFFENSIVE LINE! (Hoss will be back next week.) We’re joined by #PaultheStatExpert who gives one of the best “GO BIG RED’s” to date.

And Jon calls Paul names because he’s mean. Lord only know what the winos get for their efforts.

Nerds United Episode 110: Drinking, Halloween, and Comics

In this BRAND NEW EPISODE of Nerds United, Greg and Co-Host of the YEEEAAARRR Mike regale each other with tales of alcohol foolishness from days gone by. We also talk about our favorite Halloween candy, haunted houses and a slew of nerdy topics. Let’s run down the list.

  • Marvel Civil War vs MCU’s Civil War
  • Mark Millar’s Huck
  • Marvel and Netflix
  • The Immortal Iron Fist
  • Luke Cage
  • Heroes for Hire…?
  • The Flash (aka the Scarlet Speedster aka the Fastest Man Alive)
  • Rejection from Pro Wrestling Tees (insert sad face here)
  • Support Kevin from My 1-2-3 Cents the Podcast and HIS PWT’s store HERE!
  • Wolverine: The Long Night – the serial podcast for ANYONE who enjoys a good murder mystery
  • ABCD-bagz

As always, friends, we appreciate your support and love those who give it. We hope you enjoy this episode and all of our episodes. And while you support us for FREE, we encourage you to support others carving their own path in independent content creation. With that in mind, PLEASE consider supporting West of Oz on Kickstarter. You have only seven more days to lend your support. This is a great project. I (Greg) have personally supported it twice in the past and have done so again. If you need a refresher of what you get with the West of Oz story, please go back and listen to Episode 109 in the archives. Here’s the link to the Kickstarter. It’s a great way to help others realize their dreams.

And since you’re such great people, please enjoy this picture we discussed in the episode about me as the illegitimate fifth member of MuDvAyNe back in 2003 when I was a wee lad of 21.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 97: WE WON! Now on to Bethune-Cookman

WE (by that we mean the Huskers) WON A DAMN GAME! And racked up over 600 yards of offense, the defense looked serviceable, and Eric Lee saved the day!

We are out of practice recording a victorious podcast. But let me break it down for you as best I can:

  • Jon is grumpy from dealing with the winos. After the win, he upgraded them to Boone’s Farm
  • Hoss is a perfectly responsible non-traditional student in the teaching field, as we kept the episode short so he could return to his lesson plan
  • Hooch got pissed off that they went for two

Nerds United Episode 109: West of Oz Strikes Back

Two episodes in one calendar week. You know what that means…time is of the essence!

You have just a couple more weeks to once again lend support to West of Oz! Sean Benner and Nick Winand have been on the show before and we have used the Nerds United Bump to aid in getting two Kickstarter campaigns successfully funded.

The Kickstarter is for the Volume 2, issues 4-5-6, of the 9-part series of this original interpretation of Frank L Baum’s Wizard of Oz story. In this episode, Greg talks with Sean and Nick about this section of the overall narrative, creating on a schedule, travelling to various cities for comic cons (it’s coming, Scottsbluff, Nebraska), and more.

Hey, it’s me. Greg. I’m a big believer in this project. I’ve been on board since Day One, Campaign One. I have supported this venture both in promotion and financially. I’m one of those that wants to see this story’s end. So help me get this project funded. Your $10, $20, or $30 can go a long way.

I thank you. Sean, Nick, Amanda, and Danielle thank you. Now enjoy some artwork they shared with me during our chat.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 96: Losing to Northwestern and the Chair Trophy

Due to schedule conflicts and life, Hoss and Hooch had to combine two episodes into one this week, meaning they aren’t sitting down with the enemy for a preview chat. But Jon Damn Johnston is here to save the day!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BpGCyqpALsT/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

Jon (pictured here with the trophy the Huskers will be bringing back to Lincoln) was able to talk with some of the people who were able to make the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy possible from the Minnesota side. We’ll have that audio for you at the end, so stay tuned.

Meanwhile, the rest of the show is a lot of not pointing fingers at referees, continuing to preach patience, and JDJ reminding us that this week, “it’s personal!”

So strap in for another great show. And GO BIG RED!

It’s a truck show as Greg and Mike are on the road to see Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman in St Louis, MO. We talk about our excitement for the show as well as Batwoman, Venom, and traffic.

I’d type more, but it’s 2-damn-24.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 95: Nebraska-Northwestern Preview with InsideNU

It’s almost Gameday! And that means it’s time to preview Saturday’s game. This week at 11am, Nebraska takes on Northwestern at Ryan Field in Evanston, IL. Hoss will be there. Hooch will also be in Illinois, but that’s because he lives there.

In this episode, we’re joined by InsideNU’s Noah Coffman to offer insight into the Wildcats’ 2-3 season. Clayton Thorsen is back and healthy and has Northwestern playing well coming off their 29-19 win over #20 Michigan State in East Lansing. How do these teams match up and who has the edge?

Noah also helps Hoss on some local eateries.

And Jon Damn Johnston returns to give us an update on the winos and the demon dog in his neighborhood. Plus…is Jon a witch?

Five Heart Podcast Episode 94: Good Vibes After a Loss?

I’ll be the first to say that in college football, there’s no such thing as a moral victory.

Until there is.

What we witnessed Saturday night from Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin was nothing short of a moral victory. The offense busted its ass all game, and while there were hiccups, penalties, and errors, Big Red put up 518 yards of offense against the number-16 Badgers. And one Husker put his name in two record books.

Sophomore JD Spielman topped his own record for receiving yards in a single game, finishing with 209 yards on nine catches. The yardage was also the most that Wisconsin had ever allowed an opposing receiver to achieve on their home field.

So what does this mean for the Huskers? The defense still needs to do a better job of getting off the field and the team as a whole needs to start making better decisions that take away some of the penalties (10 for 100 yards…IN YOUR FACE, AKRON)!

So here we are, 0-5, and I have never felt better about this team as I do right now. Three losses in one week. But the team is stronger for it.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 93: Oh Boy…It’s Time to Talk Wisconsin

Beer, Brewers Baseball. Bucky freakin’ Badger.

Those are just a few of the topics Hoss and Hooch cover with Jake Kocorowski from Bucky’s 5th Quarter. Jake is a busy podcast co-host as well as an editor at B5Q. We talk about Wisconsin’s 3-1 start to the season, including the close loss to BYU. Who are some players to watch out for besides Jonathon Taylor? Where are the Badgers’ weaknesses? Do the Badgers have any weaknesses?

And as always, Jon Damn Johnston comes in to give us the latest on the winos by his house and to give his thoughts on the loss to Purdue. And BAH GAWD! The predictions this week!

Nerds United Episode 107: Top Five TV/Sitcom Couples

For this episode, I took my recording equipment down to southeast Missouri to see my friends Jared and Nia Smith. We watched some TV, talked about food, and then recorded an epic episode of Nerds United!

Hey, Tom and Jim’s Top 5, we’re blatantly (with your permission) borrowing your gimmick in a way that I don’t believe you have utilized in the past. We’re talking about our top five TV/sitcom couples. And in typical fashion, right out of the gates, curveballs. Man, I didn’t see some of Jared and Nia’s responses coming. Also, I was admonished greatly for watching the right shows. So…there’s that.

What can I say – I like what I like and a rarely venture out of my comfort zone. But now I have homework.

Well, I should give THEM homework. Did you know that the good Smith duo hasn’t seen most of the Marvel movies? And they want to bust my chops for not watching 30 Rock? Whaaaaaat?

So anyway, enjoy the show. It’s a good one. But of course, they all are.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 92: Reviewing the Loss to Purdue

0-4 for the season. Eight losses in a row. We didn’t get the good luck bump from Hammer and Rails’ Travis Miller like we had hoped. And the end result was a 42-28 Husker loss to the Boilermakers.

A lot went wrong for Nebraska Saturday. But much of it was the same that we have seen this season. Penalties. Turnovers. Inability to get off the field on third down. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

But there were some bright spots. There were positives to take away after Saturday’s loss. So we talk about some of those as well. It’s not all complete doom and gloom. And we still say “give it time, it’s going to get better.”

Nerds United Episode 106: Captain Marvel, Dark Phoenix, and Much More

It’s time for a brand new episode of your favorite comic book/movie/pop culture podcast that you can find on the Jittery Monkey Podcast Network. Mike and Greg talk about the Captain Marvel trailer, the Dark Phoenix trailer, Deadpool 2, what we’ve seen from the new Joker movie, and take a trip back in time to movies they appreciated as children. For Mike, it was the Savage brothers and Howie Mandel in Little Monsters. For Greg, it was being introduced to the F-Bomb in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Critters (seen here).

We also talk about beer, have our weekly review of Tom and Jim’s Top 5 (you’re welcome), talk about podcasts at the grassroots level and how they (okay, we) need your support. Not financial (not yet). But just help us get the word out about our podcasts here at Jittery Monkey. Share them with your friends. Subscribe if you haven’t already. Rate and review on your favorite podcast app. It helps. And we appreciate you.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 91: Talking with Purdue

Well, the last time I was joined on the show by Hammer & RailsTravis Miller was last year before the Nebraska-Purdue game. That was the last game Nebraska won.

So obviously Travis will be our little good luck charm. Obviously.

As usual, we talk about some of the key players for the Boilermakers and how the “best 0-3 team in the land” beat a top-25 team last week. We get Travis’ thoughts, an outsider’s view looking in at the situation in Lincoln and the sluggish start  for the Huskers.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 90: WOOF! The Michigan Review

Expectations have not met reality. That’s the harsh truth and the pill all Husker fans have had to swallow. So when the chips are down, we can either bury our head in the sand or we can face our problems head on.

I was trying to see how many cliches I could fit into those two lines. I feel like I could have done better.

And our beloved Huskers CAN do better. I firmly believe that. In this episode, Hoss and I are both a little down on the overall play of the Nebraska football team, but after we stopped recording, we both acknowledged that there is enough talent on this roster to compete and win.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 89: Time to Preview the Michigan Wolverines

It’s time for our weekly preview – our chat with the enemy. And this week, the enemy is one of the most storied programs in college football…the Michigan Wolverines.

We’re happy to be joined by Josh LaFond from Maize N Brew, who was happy to dispense his knowledge about this year’s squad from Ann Arbor. He also rains shit down on Greg who states quite definitively that his (Greg’s – “pronouns, pal”) favorite movie is Rudy. Josh has a lot of insight into the host Wolverines and names that Husker fans will probably hear on Gameday.

Here’s that tweet I was telling you about:

https://twitter.com/BarstoolHusker/status/1042545383166107648

Then Jon Damn Johnston is back to share more stories (unfortunately the best one didn’t make the recording, so hopefully Jon wrote about it for Corn Nation), talk a little football, and say that he doesn’t hate Michigan. But he does prefer Three’s Company over Murder, She Wrote.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 88: Reviewing Nebraska’s Loss to Troy

Ouch. That one stung. No one (probably not even most Troy fans) foresaw the Trojans coming into Memorial Stadium and leaving with a 24-19 win. And it was eerily similar to the loss to Colorado in that the Huskers could not get out of their own way. Turnovers, penalties, play calling all doomed Nebraska in their final game of the non-conference schedule.

Hoss and Hooch are here to provide some game analysis and really try to keep you in a positive mindframe. We’re reminded of this information from our friend #PattheStat:

So buckle up, friends. We never said it’d be easy. We never said it would be immediate. But we will get there. We may have to take a few lumps along the way.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 87: Previewing Saturday vs Troy

Colorado is in the past. It’s time to look forward. And that’s Troy. The Sunbelt Conference champion Trojans are in Lincoln and that means…

OPPONENT PREVIEW TIME!

This week, we are talking with Underdog Dynasty‘s Robert Latty. Robert has some insight to the Trojans’ 1-1 team after their season-opening loss to Boise State and last week’s 59-7 torching of Florida A&M. They lost a lot of skill position players and are at a size disadvantage, but this is a Troy team that went into Death Valley last year and left with a win.

And then…Jon Damn Johnston joins us to share more tales. We talk karaoke (which JDJ has never done) and X’ and O’s, and quarterbacks and knees.

And IF Jon ever does karaoke, here’s the song:

Five Heart Podcast Episode 86: Huskers Fall to Buffs in Opener

The Huskers lost. There. It’s been said. The opportunity was there to win the game, but mistakes and injuries cost Nebraska their season opener against the hated/neglected Colorado Buffaloes.

In this episode, Hoss and Hooch will review the game, and talk about the many positives that they took away from the true beginning of the Scott Frost Era.

The offensive and defensive lines played really well. Who stood out in the linebacking corps? How about the much-maligned secondary? On the offensive side of the ball, you can’t argue with 329 yards rushing. Credit for that goes to the runners and the offensive line that created holes for them to run through. The wide receivers missed a few opportunities that could have changed the outcome of the game, but still hauled in 19 passes for almost 250 yards.

The big question going forward is Adrian Martinez. How is that knee and how will he be going forward? Only time will tell.

Nerds United Episode 105: Discussing Various Cinematic Universes

In this episode, Greg and Mike discuss some of the cinematic universes, as well as what constitutes a cinematic universe instead of a linear story.

These two former classmates also share some high school stories, including both being in the National Honor Society and then kicked out of the illustrious organization.

The show gets interrupted by Greg’s son who decided that he didn’t need to stay in his bed.

And then we dive deep into the topic at hand: The Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the Worlds of DC, the Universal Monsters Universe and the Monster-verse featuring Godzilla and King Kong.

A brief chat about Captain Marvel at the end that it was go-home time. So give it a listen and follow the show on social media and subscribe on your own favorite podcast app.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 58: Previewing the Colorado Buffaloes

Well, Mother Nature is a cruel mistress who played a tune and danced on all of our hearts last Saturday night. So this Saturday afternoon, your UNDEFEATED Nebraska Cornhuskers will open the season against the pests of the past, the wienies to the west, the Colorado Buffaloes.

In this episode, we’re joined by a writer from Colorado’s SB Nation site, the Ralphie Report. Jeff Hauser covers the Buffs and is also a Heisman voter and FWAA member who took time out of his busy schedule to join us to talk about Colorado’s win in the Rocky Mountain Showdown. Who are some of the key components on the CU team that could be problematic for the Huskers?

And then after the break, it’s the return of Jon Damn Johnston. We are going to bring Jon in every week just to bring our opponents back down to reality. He’s a fan favorite, and by God, he’s our favorite as well. So hear the tale about torn down goalposts and tuxedos and get some predictions for the game. GBR!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 84: Jon Johnston, Our Fearless Leader

We have been building to this moment all summer. Corn Nation founder and heart and soul, Jon “Damn” Johnston!

It’s finally time for our fearless leader to take his place on the Stand, answering the same questions we have posed to our Corn Nation colleagues over the course of the entire series.

Here’s what we learned about Jon:

  • He is from a small town in Nebraska
  • He fought in the Korean War at the age of 5
  • He was the first IT Consultant (probably)
  • His favorite Husker moment elicited a “WTF” from Hoss
  • He really does love all of us.

If that’s not enough reason to listen, then know that he also really rips on the Akron Zips (accidental rhyme, I’m keeping it) and he made Hooch laugh so hard he (Hooch, “pronouns, pal”) had to turn down his microphone.

Seriously, Jon is an amazing person and the reason we are all here. So enjoy this amazing episode of the Five Heart Podcast. #GBR

Five Heart Podcast Episode 83: Chatting with Andy Ketterson

It’s officially Game Week! And while we have some Husker news and notes to discuss, we still have the Cross Examination to continue. It wraps up later this week when Jon Johnston takes the chair, but in Episode 83, Corn Nation veteran Andy Ketterson sits down to be cross examined, and we learn how he moved to Nebraska as a child, went to the University of Nebraska, became a fan, and dare I say, a diehard.

We also have the ability, due to the late hour of our recording, to talk about the news we learned this weekend. Tre Bryant retires from the game he loves. Adrian Martinez is the announced starter for the Akron game. And the depth chart has few surprises.

Husker football is almost upon us. Enjoy it, my friends.

We did have a few issues with internet connection during the recording. Hopefully you’re able to follow along relatively easy. It got better as the show went on.

Nerds United Episode 104: Old Man Logan, Kingdom Come, The Office and Parks & Rec

Hey kids! Greg and Mike here with a brand new episode of your favorite comic book/pop culture podcast! The numbers are in and we are definitely #1 for this genre in the Southern Illinois area, and will fight any other podcast that tries to claim otherwise (unless you’re bigger than us – ML).

This week, we’re talking about some books that Greg loaned to Mike for his reading pleasure. Then there’s a recap of Greg’s day trip to Chicagoland, which, if you’re wondering, is about the only way to go to Chicagoland. Lots of “windshield time.”

Get Mike’s scoop on Old Man Logan and Kingdom Come. Greg will be passing along some more books to Mike for future reading.

Now the coup de grace is the discussion at the end when the guys discuss The Office and Parks & Recreation. Make sure you stick around for that and share your ideas in the comments on Facebook or join the conversation on Twitter.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 82: Fan Day Fun

Happy Sunday and GO BIG RED! Welcome to a brand new episode of the Five Heart Podcast, and thank you for subscribing/listening. This week, Hoss is at his sister’s wedding, because she and her husband had the good sense to get married BEFORE football season. But I digress.

Patrick Gerhart joins Greg Mehochko to talk about Huskers Fan Day as well as Fall practices, and a peek into the 2018 season, from which, thankfully, we’re only two weeks away. Is the starting QB situation becoming clear? How are the offensive and defensive lines looking? And in this episode, the guys don’t hesitate to compare this team to last year, as many of the players are the same.

Troy Walters has a cameo (in that we mention his name a few times) and Mario Verduzco is a legit boss!

Nerds United Episode 103: Writer/Artist David Gorden

Back to basics! This type of episode was the very beginning of Nerds United, where I would sit down with a comic book creator and hear their tale, their “origin story,” where I learned how they became interested in comics and how the early interest turned into a lifelong passion and eventually them creating comics themselves.

This week I’m joined by David Gorden, a creator I had the good fortune to meet somewhat accidentally earlier this summer. Hear the story of our initial meeting and hear how David became interested in comic books. In this episode, you’ll learn as I did how personal loss shaped his career, and how sometimes we go back home to get back on track.

David put out a graphic novel earlier this year called “Kwame Hightower and the Man with No Name.” It tells the story of 12-year-old Kwame, a boy from North St. Louis, who pulls Excalibur from the Sacred Stone, thus becoming King of England, and opens Kwame’s life to new adventures and possibilities the likes of which he never even thought about. Pick up your copy of the book on Amazon using the handy link right below, or listen to the end of the episode to hear how you can win an autographed copy of the book yourself.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 81: Cross Examination of Zach Grunder

Welcome back, everybody. Hoss survived Colorado, and Greg survived another week of doing someone else’s work. This week, the guys are joined by Zach Grunder, a recent UNL graduate who just returned from a well-deserved extended vacation to Europe, where our young colleague toured most of the continent.

Who is Zach?

Well, he’s the swaying gent on the right of this famous Husker GIF.

Image result for husker gif

So the Cross Examination is filled with all the familiar questions. But hey, fall practice has begun! And that means there’s Husker football to discuss. First of all, Hoss is downright tickled that OC Troy Walters defines the team as having that “extra juice” practicing in full pads. And with Maurice Washington eligible and practicing, how is he adapting with a late start?

Nerds United Episode 102: Ask the Nerds

Hey everybody! Greg and Mike (@MikeRLuther) here. This week on an all-new episode of the show, we take your questions. But we also did something fun on Facebook as we streamed the first ten or fifteen minutes of the recording before switching primarily to the audio format. So head over to Facebook.com/nerdsunitedshow and watch that before listening to the remainder of the episode.

Also, BIG shout out to Tom from Tom and Jim’s Top 5 for interacting with us on Facebook. They also have a new episode coming out today. So make sure you subscribe to and download their shows as well.

So some of the questions we answer pertain to DC Universe streaming app, comic book characters we’d like to see on the big screen (that we haven’t yet), the Marvel/James Gunn/Dave Bautista situation, and favorite fictional beverages.

Plus we discuss Power Rangers, the Batman movie, Baywatch, and a lot more.

At the end of the episode, we talk about high-dollar collectibles or memorabilia we’d own if money was no factor. So I leave it to you. Head over to Facebook and join the discussion by telling us what pop culture piece of memorabilia you’d own if you could.

And remember to be kind. Rewind.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 80: The Firm Has Questions

Hello good people. Hoss is out of town this weekend, so we got together last Sunday night and put a show in the can for you.

Here was Hoss’ suggestion: Let’s ask each other the questions we’ve been asking all of our friends at Corn Nation.

So that’s what we did…we cross examined each other.

Image result for giggity gif

There has been a lot going on in Big Ten news this week, but due to our early recording, we’ll have to talk about recent happenings in next week’s show. Because there’s a LOT to discuss. And next week, we’ll know even more than we do today!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 79: Patrick Gerhart Returns

In this week’s episode, Patrick Gerhart, another outstanding member of the Corn Nation staff,

Image result for ace ventura and one hell of a model american gif joins Greg for the Cross Examination. If you were hoping to hear the soothing tones of Hoss Reuter, he has some family in town this weekend and therefore was unable to join us.

Since Patrick is one of our Nebrasketball guys, we throw a couple wrinkles into this cross examination. But there is plenty of football talk and great memories shared. And Greg didn’t pass out from the benadryl, so that’s something (as well as a cautionary tale for all of you thinking about taking benadryl like you take ibuprofen).

Nerds United Episode 101: San Diego Comic Con and More

Hey everyone! It’s the weekend of the 2018 San Diego Comic Con, and what better way to spend it than with two guys who aren’t at Comic Con and have never been to Comic Con?

TWO GUYS! Mike, aka Co-Host Of The Year, is back talking about our enthusiasm about Comic Con, but also our hesitations. I mean, 100,000 people can’t be wrong. But that doesn’t mean we want to be asses and elbows with them. Oh, this is also the time where we should remind you to listen to this past week’s episode of Positive Cynicism with Chad Smart and Eric Bennett, as they have both been to SDCC (Eric a ridiculous 13 or 14 times), and much of our conversation is an offshoot of their chat.

We also work to get Anheuser Busch as an official sponsor of the podcast, but after we shit on Bud Light last time, that seems unlikely. WORK YOUR MAGIC, KYLE!

Guess who’s coming to St. Louis in October.

We are!

But…Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman will also be in town for a recording of their wildly entertaining podcast Hollywood Babble-On. And we’re going to the show!

We also talk about Greg’s radio days, because Mike’s mom thinks Greg sounds like he should be in radio. Spoiler alert…it ends on a down beat.

Follow Mike on Twitter. He has eleven followers currently and that makes me sad. You can find him here and all the other social media accounts of importance!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 78: Cross Examining the Good Doctor

All right, folks, this is one you have been eager for us to present. He’s known by many names, but on Corn Nation and on Twitter, he’s simply “Salt Creek & Stadium,” or affectionately “Salt” for short. Salt is a Husker fan and friend of the environment!

First things first…we talk about the newest hire for the Nebraska football staff – Ron Brown. What could his return to Lincoln mean for the Huskers and the University?

Then we get to know Salt, and how a Navy kid ended up in Nebraska (the Bay of Omaha is a family joke). When did Salt become a Husker fan? Who’s his favorite Husker and what’s his favorite Husker moment? And how did Salt come to write for Corn Nation?

Five Heart Podcast Episode 77: Cross Examining a Volleyball Guru

Welcome to a brand new episode of the Five Heart Podcast. This week’s show is a continuation of the on-going summer series of “get to know your Corn Nation staff,” better and more concisely known as “The Cross Examination.”

Learn about what moment solidified Ty’s Husker fandom. Find out who his favorite Husker of all time is, as well as his favorite Nebraska sports moment. And if you like alcohol (and you should, you listen to this podcast), check out his summer series on Corn Nation about breweries, distilleries, and wineries in The Good Life. Here’s his latest post.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 76: Cross Examination of Rick Cone

The Firm is back! Hoss and Hooch resume the cross examination series with Corn Nation’s Rick Cone.

Rick talks about growing up in the Sandhills and Gamedays on the farm. He also talks about his favorite players and tells an amazing story of his favorite Husker sports moment. It’s really damn incredible.

Rick is, as you are aware, our Director of Recruiting. So we talk about the recruiting trail and some of the players Rick is looking forward to see. We talk about social media and its impact on recruiting. I’m not going to spoil the conversation, but it’s a bit of a consensus that kids will be kids, and if a Tweet that says “blessed to receive an offer from ________” helps raise the profile of a student athlete to the point where they can better their circumstances, so be it.

Oh…spoiler alert.

Nerds United Episode 100: We March On

Hey everyone and thank you for taking the time to click the link, open the description in your podcast app, or however you came across reading these words.

I APPRECIATE YOU!

As many of you know, for this episode, I was really wanting to have Kevin Smith as my guest. But that ended up not happening. I’ll try him again at a different time. I know he has plenty of irons in various fires.

So for this episode, I’m just getting you caught up on some of what I have been and will be reading. I’ve told my people at Twilight Comics (in Swansea, IL) that I’m going to convert from single issues to trade paperbacks, and to start ordering accordingly for me. The staff there is always thinking of new ways to get people in the doors, and Tuesday night’s “wedding celebration” of Batman and Catwoman was no different. I wasn’t there, but my son had some leftover cake on Wednesday.

So here’s a short list of some books I recommend: Superman/Batman: Finest Worlds, Kwame Hightower and the Man With No Name, and for kicks, anytime you see a Hellboy TPB on your store’s shelves, just buy it and read it.

That’s all for now. You’re great. I thank you for 5+ years of support and listenership and I promise that Episode 200 will be before 2023.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 75: Hoss Hates Herbie

CLARIFICATION…Hoss hates current Herbie.

It was an accidental conversation that got brought up while we were talking about Hoss’ new hat purchase. “New season. New coach. New hat.” He didn’t get me one…I forgot to even bring that up.

Classic Herbie. That’s Hoss’ bread n butter. We also talk about the Tunnel Walk, throw a shout out to our friends at the Big Red Cobcast, and talk a little recruiting ahead of next week’s episode. Next week, the Firm of Hoss and Hooch returns with a new Cross Examination of our Director of Recruiting, Rick Cone.

Nerds United Episode 99: Counting Down Our Favorite “Bad” Comic Book Movies

In the vein of Tom and Jim’s Top 5, Co-Host of the Year Mike and I do our own Top 5 Countdown, and it’s our favorite “guilty pleasure” comic book movies.

The only criteria are as follows: It has to be a movie based on a comic book, and it has to have a Rotten Tomatoes score of less than 50%.

What made our lists? What movies narrowly missed our lists and were relegated to “honorable mention” status? And what did you, the listener, contribute to the show? Plus we have seamlessly interwoven some movie clips into the episode. But if you want a Top 5 done right, go listen to Tom and Jim’s Top 5. Theirs don’t go nearly as long.

And since I included Revis’ “Caught in the Rain” on the episode, here’s a little bit about that other closing credits song we talked about.

If you love fantastic music, I really encourage you to check out the debut album of Revis, available a click away on Amazon!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 74: Hoss, Hooch, and Headlines

In this episode, Hoss and Hooch take a departure from their summer Cross Examination series to get caught up on life and Husker news.

Last Saturday night, Hoss was in an emergency room in Missouri.

Scott Frost got away for a few days and hiked the Grand Canyon (24 miles) in one day. That can only help him in the locker room, but exactly how will it motivate the team? And how does Frost’s off-season compare to someone like Jim Harbaugh?

Let’s get caught up on some Husker recruits, shall we? It’s been a few weeks, but a QB from Colorado with a familiar last name committed to the Class of 2019. He’s joined by a couple offensive linemen who would add some much-needed depth and “NFL level” ability to the line. Throw in a defensive back that is eligible to play in 2018 and we have one more warm body in that room.

We talk about this preview piece by SB Nation’s Bill Connelly, why we agree and disagree with him.

And we end the show with Hoss regaling us with the tale of his Friday night in Omaha. Also, he’s a bit of a poet at the very end.

Nerds United Episode 98: Jay Peteranetz Returns Again

It’s a brand new episode with the one and only Jay Peteranetz. Jay is fresh off a weekend at Denver Comic Con and is in the process of shipping out the rewards from the successful Kickstarter Campaign for the original comic book Broderick, for which he did the art (Ron “Booth Babe” Bryce providing the story).

https://www.instagram.com/p/BjzjGhZH7Zt/

The show begins with me singing a song, and Jay promptly asking me to stop. We talk about some of the keys to a successful Kickstarter, like reasonable goals, and turning down offers to sell Broderick to maintain control of the IP.

Jay had a good time at Denver Comic Con, so we talk about some of the high points from his weekend there.

And at the end we have a little fun talking about Susan Storm and other superheroes on the beach (see featured image).

Follow Jay on instagram (see above) and Twitter. Remember to rate and review the podcast on your favorite listening app. And don’t forget that I’m still trying to get Kevin Smith on the show for the first week of July. Go back and read this entry from last year as I hope it will better explain why Kevin has been such a huge part of my life, and why he’s responsible for you being here as well.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 73: Cross Examination of Evan Wiebe

Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there. For all the dads who coach the little league sports, who help build the tree houses, help make the blanket forts, and do even the smallest act to enhance your children’s lives…you’re awesome.

I’d like to dedicate this show to you, but it’s not enough.

This week, Hoss is in Missouri on a weekend holiday (he forgot this is a weekly podcast). I’m joined by young Corn Nation contributor Evan Wiebe. Evan is a student at UNL (don’t blame him for the student section…I knew better than to even bring it up) who is working on completing two degrees in just three years of college. I’d tell you more, but the answers you seek are found within.

Positive Cynicism EP 45: Predetermined Hating is So Low

While June was meant to be the start of a new series on Positive Cynicism looking at the evolution of the summer blockbuster, life obligations pushed those plans back for a month.

Instead host @chadsmart and frequent pop culture collaborator Eric Bennett examine the not new but seeming louder occurrence of people choosing to hate a movie before they’ve seen it. Whether it was due to negative stories published during production, backlash against the polarizing The Last Jedi or because it’s the cool thing to do, a vocal majority on social media had already decided Solo: A Star Wars Story was a terrible movie months before it hit theaters.

The less than stellar box office receipts would have one thinking the movie is a dud and Star Wars fandom is dying out.

Do any of these thoughts ring true? Chad and Eric give their opinions and try to figure out why people listen to online reviews in the first place?

Five Heart Podcast Episode 72: A Lawyer Takes the Stand

What do you do when you have a lawyer on the Corn Nation Cross Examination? You quickly find out you’re using “cross examination” incorrectly. But Nate insisted we didn’t change the name of the segment.

Hoss is celebrating “Sober Wednesday” for some reason, but is back for this week’s episode. That’s right, he finally made it out of CostCo.

So we ask Nate the usual questions, with several detours along the way.

The second half of the show is a one-shot list, where the trio gives their answers to the following topics that have circulated social media in recent weeks:

All Time favorite player each sport.

NBA
NFL
NCAAF
NCAAB
MLB
NHL
Boxing
Wrestling

Favorite movie of each sport

Five Heart Podcast Episode 71: Cross Examining Husker Mike

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Hoss is stuck at CostCo.

I don’t think I’ve been to a Costco in about seven years.

Anyway, I’m joined by (Husker) Mike Jaixen, one of the founding father’s of Corn Nation. He’s also the first native Nebraskan during this summer series.

Learn about Mike growing up in Omaha and how he spent Husker game days as a child. Learn about Husker Mike’s favorite player(s) and hear his take on the last twenty years of coaches.

Fun fact – Husker Mike was in Miami for the ’94 Orange Bowl. So we learn about that experience, his preconceived idea of Miami fans, and Hurricane fans’ thoughts on Husker fans that night.

We are both interrupted by our respective children. So it’s a family-friendly show.

Nerds United Episode 97: Mike is BACK!

CO-HOST OF THE YEAR IS BACK!

Mike is here and we’re talking comics! We each read a graphic novel and brought it back to discuss. I brought some 2003 Robert Kirkman to the table. Not The Walking Dead. But rather – Invincible!

Mike brought a Brian Michael Bendis creation, Miles Morales, to the show. Miles is away from the Ultimate Universe. Which crazy Marvel characters does he encounter? Hint – Golden Balls. But also, Jessica Jones.

WHAT?!? This comic isn’t new. Go get it!

There’s also a long interlude about the old high school days, and the “cool kids.” So if you ever wanted insight into my high school life, there you have it.

Shout out’s to Mike’s son Nolan, as well as Mike’s mom, a loyal listener of Episode 95, and probably 97.

Big shout out to Lion Forge Comics in St. Louis. My job took me into their office on Thursday. I got to see my friend Lorenzo and writer/artist David Gorden. They hooked me up with Gorden’s labor-of-love and three-year project Kwame Hightower: And the Man With No Name.

David will be joining me on an upcoming episode of the show. Lorenzo and I will get together in a couple months ahead of the release of his book Scarab!

Want to read David’s book? You can have it in-hand in just a couple days by using the link below!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 70: Cross Examining Paul Dalen

Hello Husker fans. It’s time for another Corn Nation Cross Examination, an audio profile of one of our own at Corn Nation. This week, The Firm of Hoss and Hooch sit down with the Master of Mathematics, the Sultan of Statistics, Paul Dalen.

We hear Paul’s tale to Husker fandom, from northwest Iowa, to the Army, to his current whereabouts. Paul puts his love of numbers to work to try to find patterns in Husker football. He’s a great asset at Corn Nation, and we had a lot of fun recording the episode, including some a Capella singing that didn’t make it in the final edit.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 183: Previewing Hunsperger v Matheus

Cage Match Preview

Hey everyone. Greg Mehochko here for Kevin Hunsperger. I’m excited to bring you two sides of a story in Episode 183.

As you are probably aware, Kevin puts his undefeated record on the line this Saturday in Pinckneyville, IL. More importantly, Kevin steps into the cage to fight for the honor of his twelve-year-old daughter and all victims of bullying. If you remember Episode 181, Kevin’s daughter Brooke was sitting ringside in Carterville a few weeks ago when “The Mad Viking” Roger Matheus threw Brooke into the ring and threatened to power slam her. It was all in an attempt to get Kevin to sign a contract for this Saturday’s event. Kevin signed the contract and Matheus still power slammed Brooke.

In this episode, I talk with Kevin, discussing the events that led up to this moment and his apprehension to stepping into the cage with the most dangerous man in Stride Pro Wrestling.

AND THEN…

I reached out to Matheus to get the Viking King’s side of the story. While the events are the same, he definitely has a different interpretation of how things went down, where and how he felt wronged in Stride Pro Wrestling. He even blames Kevin for the events just a few weeks ago. And Matheus has a chilling message for Kevin and everyone else in Stride Pro Wrestling.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 69: Our First Corn Nation Cross Examination

Hello all and welcome to another entertaining episode of the Five Heart Podcast. This is the first episode in a series that should stretch all summer and almost to opening week, where we visit with a different Corn Nation staff member and learn a little more about them.

Our first victim, I mean guest…Jill Heemstra. Now you will remember that Jill has been on the podcast before, particularly to discuss Husker women’s basketball. So this time around, we learn a little more about Jill, what brought her to Nebraska and Husker fandom.

We talk about some of Jill’s favorite moments in Husker athletics, her journey to Corn Nation, and some of her moments of glory on Corn Nation, like the Kickoff Poetry, particularly when the poems, like Northwestern’s alternate uniforms, went gothic!

This was shared in the CN Slack Chat Room, and I think it’s a cool idea to share a Nebraska twitter account each week that really doesn’t have anything to do with the Huskers. Or maybe I just love dogs.

If you like the show, tell your friends. Tell them we’re on PodBeanApple PodcastsGoogle Play, and Stitcher. Subscribe, then rate and review.

Nerds United Episode 96: The Apple and the Last Jedi

Whew. There is a LOT to unload in this episode. I knew going in that @chadsmart was not a fan of Star Wars Episode 8: The Last Jedi. But after I finally had a chance to watch the movie recently, I wanted to sit down with him and chat about the movie.

Ol Chad had just one condition, however. He wouldn’t talk to me about Star Wars until I saw The Apple. What is The Apple?

It’s a musical filmed in 1979, released in 1980, and set in “futuristic 1994!” I’m not making this up, folks. Watch the trailer. It’s insane! So we talk all about BIM.

And then the space opera talk takes over, as Chad and I talk about The Last Jedi. What did we like about it? What didn’t we like about it? And why does it make us even more eager for Episode 9, regardless of our feelings towards Ep. 8?

Hey friends, keep this in mind. Chad is training (I use that term loosely) for a half-marathon in Los Angeles in the Fall. In doing so, he’s also raising money for St. Jude’s Hospital. I encourage you to click the link and if you can, throw a few dollars towards St. Jude’s in support of Chad’s fund raising efforts.

Also, with this being Episode 96, I’m really going to ramp up my efforts to have a very special guest on Episode 100. So if you want Silent Bob himself, Kevin Smith as a guest on this show, please follow along on Twitter (@nerdsunitedshow) and help get the campaign noticed by a true inspiration to me.

As I said to Chad at the end of the recording, without Kevin Smith, he wouldn’t have a podcast on the Jittery Monkey Podcast Network. There would be no podcast network. There would be no Nerds United. So if you enjoy Nerds United, you can thank Kevin Smith. And I really hope to be able to do that!

Enjoy the new episode, friends. May the Force be with you.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 68: Ben Miles, Baseball, and Bear Wrestling

Husker fans this week were on the receiving end of some sad, but expected news, as fullback Ben Miles announced he was leaving the program and seeking to continue his educational and football career elsewhere.

I say “expected” because the offensive system Scott Frost is implementing doesn’t really call for a fullback. So Hoss tells us some places that Miles could wind up that utilize the fullback in the way he is accustomed.

We quickly touch on Husker baseball (WHERE ARE YOU, KEITH?) and Husker softball. And then for fun, which NFL players would be able to successfully wrestle a bear?

It’s the dead zone of Husker football. So we’re going to mix it up some in the next few months and put some of our fellow Corn Nation folks on the show to learn more about them. And we’ll sprinkle in some football movie fun as well.

If you like the show, please share it with your friends on social media. Help us get the word out. If you REALLY like the show, leave us a nice rate/review on iTunes. That’d be quite nice of you.

Speaking of, we’re on PodBeanApple PodcastsGoogle Play, and Stitcher. Subscribe and the shows will show up on your device with little or no user intervention.

Nerds United Episode 95: Spoiling Avengers Infinity War

WARNING!!!!!!!

If you have not seen Avengers – Infinity War, do NOT listen to this episode. Download it, save it, and listen to it ONLY AFTER YOU HAVE WATCHED THE MOVIE!!!

We seriously pull no punches when talking about the happenings of the movie.

Who is “we,” you ask? Well, that story gets told in the episode, but long story short, I’m joined by my high school classmate Mike Luther, a fellow nerd who a) has seen the movie (obviously) and 2) lives in the same town as me. It’s really convenient that way.

And we drink beer. Just a couple. We’re responsible.

So what happened in Avengers – Infinity War? I’m sure as hell NOT going to tell you here. You need to listen to the show. But if you are listening to the show, you should have seen the movie by now.

That makes sense, right Mike?

[Mike nods affirmation]

So listen to the show, and then head over to the Amazon link and buy something. Anything. They have it.

Don’t forget that this Saturday, May 5, Cinco de Mayo, is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! So go support your LOCAL comic book shops.

Nerds United 94: SPOILER FREE Avengers Infinity War Review

Let’s face it…you hate spoilers. I know this because I too hate spoilers, and I feel like we think alike on this subject.

Avengers – Infinity War has only been in theaters for about a week, and that’s not enough time for everyone to have seen the movie. But I moved Heaven and Earth to be able to watch the newest offering from Marvel Studios this past weekend, and I am sure glad I did.

What I have for you in this episode of Nerds United is a SPOILER FREE review. And truth be told, it’s not even much of a review. I hit a few high points. I don’t spoil anything. And I just say “this movie is amazing, you need to watch it!”

Is that something you feel you can get behind?

Good.

Because TOMORROW I will drop another brand new episode where I talk all about the movie and spoil it up the wazoo! So listen to this episode, go give Marvel/Disney your $10-$15, and then come back and listen to the episode all about Avengers – Infinity War!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 67: Spring Game, Tunnel Walk, and Guilty Pleasures

There’s a lot to discuss after last week’s Spring Game. How did the quarterbacks perform? How about the running backs? How much combined muscle mass did Zach Duval put on Devine Ozigbo and Mikale Wilbon? How electrifying was Greg Bell?

Who stood out on the defense? What are some of Hoss’ guilty pleasure songs, and why does Greg have a special place in one of his five hearts for musicals of all varieties? What sweep option play had Hoss completely baffled to the point that he sought wisdom from the Twittersphere?

Over all, how did the Huskers look on Saturday? How did Scott Frost handle himself and his team in his first Spring Game in Lincoln since the Spring of 1997?

Since there has been talk of changing the song for the Tunnel Walk, the guys offer their suggestions and show how old they really are.

And for the life of me, I don’t remember how I made a Homestar Runner reference, but I did. And in case you wanted to be cheaply entertained, please watch this video.

So that’s the show. Hope you enjoyed it. We had a blast recording it. And we do it for you. So keep that in mind when you head to the comments section.

And remember that we’re on PodBeanApple PodcastsGoogle Play, and Stitcher. When you subscribe, you can take us with you anywhere you go. And you get the show downloaded to your device automagically.

Thanks for listening. Rate/review.

Nerds United Episode 93: Cape Comic Con Review & More

This past weekend was the annual Cape Comic Con in Cape Girardeau, MO. I once again made my yearly trek to my once-upon-a-time town to visit friends and walk the floor of the Con, seeing familiar faces, supporting vendors, and doing all with my wife and son.

This episode is broken up into three sections. The first segment has me joined once again by Cape Con Director Ken Murphy, as we talked about the Con weekend, special guests Lou Ferrigno and Reb Brown, several artists and writers, as well as numerous vendors. We also talk about the wrestling aspect of the comic con weekend, which included global stars like Tommy Dreamer, Hangman Page, the Besties in the World, Thunder Rosa, Dan “The Beast” Severn, and “Cowboy” James Storm joining Cape Championship Wrestling favorites like Austin Lane, Brandon Barbwire, Farmer Billy Hills, Sarah Summers, the Pinnacle, the Crowleys, and many more. It was a night of blood, sweat, tears, betrayal, revenge, and triumph.

The conversation continues with Jay Noel, a St. Louis author who has written two trilogies and whose newest novel, “Gateway Mothman,” is available now on Amazon. Check out his series that begins with “Dragonfly Warrior,” a steam punk Japanese setting in an alternate history.

And finally, I talk with Scott Reed from BurgComics.com, an online retailer who not only attends Cape Con, but also hosts his own Con in Harrisburg, IL. In a few minutes, we learn a little bit about Scott, the collection he shares with the public and the one he keeps just for himself. And we find out about the 2018 Burg Comic Con.

The 2018 Cape Con is in the books. And I am already eager for 2019. Mark YOUR calendars for the 4th weekend in April, 2019. And I’ll see you at the Cape Comic Con.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 66: Spring Game Preview

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Hooch and Hoss talk about today’s Spring Game. The guys review the Red and White rosters. Who has the advantage in each position? Why do we think some of the roster decisions were made, and what does it mean for the overall depth chart going forward?

Also, Scott Frost was interviewed by Bruce Feldman for Sports Illustrated this week. While the straight-shooting coach didn’t say anything particularly inflammatory, was it particularly his place to speak out against previous administrations?

The Spring Game is mere hours away, so hopefully you have time to listen to this before the 11:00am kickoff. It has taken a Winter Frost to reignite the fires of the fanbase, as Husker fans like yourselves are expected to put more butts in seats than any other Spring Game in the country.

I tip my cap to you.

Also, and this is a serious question…who the hell (besides Hoss) mixes beer with orange juice?

And remember you can find the podcast the on PodBeanApple PodcastsGoogle Play, and Stitcher.

And you should know by now where to find us on social media. Expect some Spring Game thoughts on Facebook and Twitter tomorrow.

GBR!

Nerds United Episode 92: Angels of Hell Writer Chris Reichard

It’s another new episode of Nerds United this month. I know what you’re thinking. Three consecutive weeks of new episodes.

Hell has not frozen over.

In fact, it’s Hell on Earth as I am joined by Chris Reichard, writer of Angels of Hell #1: An Apocalyptic Tale feat. the Four Horsemen.

Chris is from the St. Louis, MO area, but spent eight years in the US Army. His creative writing, in fact the early ideas for this story, go back to his high school days. And his love of comics dates back even further.

In this episode, we’ll learn about Chris and his origin story, as it were. We talk about Chris’ take on the apocalypse and the Four Horsemen and the quest they find themselves on in an effort to save the world.

The book is available to order on Kickstarter. I definitely recommend looking it over and throwing a few dollars their way. Support Indy Comics! I really can’t stress that enough!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 65: Things Get Weird

This episode is brought to you by Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (until Ty tells me where I can find Blue Blood Brewing Company products in my area).

In this episode, we talk about the departure of Patrick O’Brien from the Husker football team after he asked for and was granted a release from his scholarship. That really throws the QB picture into chaos as we had him pegged as the season-opening starter. So where does that leave the QB position and players like Tristan Gebbia, Adrian Martinez, and, dare we say, Noah Vedral?

Also, plenty of talk this week on the receiving corps, what could be a bright spot for the Husker offense. Stanley Morgan returns and could easily be Nebraska’s first 1,000-yard receiver. But JD Spielman is a returning freshman All-American, and Tyjon Lindsey is a dynamic playmaker and both figure to be key pieces to the Nebraska offensive unit.

And we’re trying to get Hoss a girlfriend, gosh darnit! So if you like long walks on the beach, a glass of moscato once a year, dogs, and a fella who can squat over 300 pounds, reach out via the social media access points below.

Thanks to Tom and Jim’s Top 5 for recommending Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale. And to the good folks of Nebraska City for their contribution to trees and clean air and…arbor.

Enjoy the show!

Nerds United Episode 91: Reviewing Justice League with Tom Skull

Shows in back-to-back weeks. I don’t know how far back you’d have to go in the archives to find when that happened last.

Joining me this week is Tom Skull, co-host of two of his own podcasts, the Skullbuster Wrestlecast and Tom and Jim’s Top 5. Several weeks back, Tom was a guest on Chad’s first edition of “Question Everything,” his new monthly interview segment. But the day before that, Tom, along with his brother Jason, was on My 1-2-3 Cents to talk wrestling with Kevin. It was unofficially “Tom Skull Week” here at the Jittery Monkey Network, and the continuation of that is this episode where Tom and I talk about the Justice League movie, a movie neither of us had seen when I first asked Tom to be on the show.

So we will talk about Justice League, what we liked and what we didn’t like. And the DC cinematic universe in general.

That’s it, boys and girls, that’s the show. We’re reviewing a movie from last Fall, drinking beer, and having a good conversation. I can’t emphasize enough how much you should get the Podbean app and listen to each and every episode of Tom and Jim’s Top 5. I only have a few more to go before I’m caught up fully. And that’s saying something, because I got on board after they’d had a year full of shows. Truly entertaining and hits you right in the nostalgia!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 64: Husker Offense – Frost vs Everyone Else

What happens when you get two guys together at 11:00pm on a Friday night to record themselves talking about Husker football?

NO, THEY DON’T STILL LIVE WITH THEIR PARENTS!

It’s late – this may not be the most coherent write-up. Blame Brian. BT always said to make sure the write-ups had at least 150 words in them so they’d be picked up by Google or something. Otherwise, at 1am, I’d just say:

Here’s the new show. I’m going to bed.

Brian wouldn’t want that. And you deserve better.

Unfortunately, this episode is the Tim Beck offensive game plan of podcasts (no offense, Mister Beck).

Not this Beck.

By that I mean…we have a good football-related conversation for the first portion of the episode, and then, without warning or provocation, we just switch it up to something that doesn’t work as well.

But we do get in some talk about Scott Frost’s offensive philosophy, starting with the quarterback position and then the parts of Frost’s game plan that set him apart from his peers.

We also reference this article on Corn Nation, and a much appreciated shout out from my colleagues who excel with the written word.

Don’t forget that the podcast is on Google Play and PodBean, as well as Apple Podcasts and Stitcher as it has been. David even told me that it’s on an app called OverCast, so check it out there if you use that app. More ways to listen. All for your convenience. All of the other podcasts I mention in the show are all on Apple Podcast and I’m sure the other formats as well. I know they’re on podbean.

That’s it. I’ve got nothing left to say. Goodnight, everybody. Yes, even you, reading this at 8:30am. Don’t judge me. But you can @ me, at the social media links below!

Nerds United Episode 90: Stache Publishing and Colossal Chaos

In this brand-new episode, I’m joined by Stache Publishing’s Anthony Mathenia and writer Alex Wills as we talk about comics, creating comics, publishing comics, shipping comics, and getting comics funded on Kickstarter.

Stache currently has a new anthology live on Kickstarter, and you have until the end of April to support this *gigantic* project…because they’re giant monsters and robots and such. Get it?

Alex contributes a story to the book, titled Attack on Bug City (see the featured photo), a unique twist on the whole kaiju genre. I talk with him about his life in comics both from the fan perspective and as a writer.

And then, point blank, I ask the guys how one would start to write a comic book. You see, I have a story in my head that I want to tell. So Alex and Anthony give me some pointers and a brief idea of what I – or anyone looking to become a writer – should do at the start of the process.

Remember to check out Colossal Chaos, the fourth anthology in the Out of the Blue series from Stache Publishing. As I said at the end of the episode, I gave them some of my money, and I encourage you to do the same!

Next week, I’m bringing in another guest in Tom Skull of Tom and Jim’s Top 5 Podcast and we’re reviewing the following movie…so be ready!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 63: Hoss and the O-Line

It’s time to scratch that itch! Football conversation triumphantly returns to the Five Heart Podcast as Hoss and Hooch talk about some of the news and notes from the Spring Practice.

Tanner Farmer taking snaps at Center. But he’s not alone. Young’n Will Farniok is also getting some time there. Not bad for a kid who was taking high school classes in December.

And what centers in the NFL would Hoss show to his hypothetical son, if his son were learning the art of being a center?

Five Heart Podcast Episode 62: Hooch’s Solo Flight

Due to a scheduling conundrum, you have the joy of listening to I (Greg) bring you the latest in Husker athletic news and notes. We’ll do it up right next week and get more people back on the show, but for a Saturday morning, sometimes one is enough. But fear not, my son pops in a couple times to say hi.

Here are the Husker sports that get mentioned:

  • Men’s Basketball
  • Women’s Basketball
  • Wrestling
  • Softball
  • Baseball
  • Beach Volleyball

I hope to get someone from the Club Hockey program on the show in the near future. If you are involved with that or know someone who is, let me know so I can get that sport on the show.

Next week we’ll talk football, because it seems like it’s been awhile since we’ve done that and I’m sure you’re all itching for it.

Positive Cynicism EP 36: Question Everything; So, Is He Captain America?

On the latest installment of the popular interview segment, @chadsmart is joined by @bls419 to discuss her podcast, So, Is He Captain America? If you’re a die hard superhero fan, you may want to approach this episode with caution. In addition to discussing the podcast, we play the game “Which Chris” and “Marvel or DC.” Ultimately the discussion derails from superhero to discussing the greatness of Grease 2.

@chadsmart will attempt to run a half-marathon in October. His goal is to raise $1000 for St. Jude’s. If you are interested in making a donation or spreading the word to help raise money, please click HERE!

Positive Cynicism Ep 35: Don’t Spread Hate

Ever had ideas floating through your head held together by a tiny string? That’s what this episode of Positive Cynicism is like. @chadsmart gives a soliloquy about negative social media posts. Why do people post negative or attacking comments to people they don’t know? What is gained by insulting people? If you can answer these questions, Chad would like to hear from you because he doesn’t understand why people choose to spread hate instead of positivity.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 61: Men’s and Women’s #Nebrasketball

Hello again and welcome to a new episode of the Five Heart Podcast. Thank you ALL for downloading our last episode, our Top Five Most Agonizing Football Losses episode.

Some of you didn’t want us trudging up such painful memories. But it was very cathartic, and will a few adult beverages, a lot of fun. It was also our second-most-downloaded show in the history of the Five Heart Podcast. So…no pressure to outdo that one.

This episode features two Corn Nation contributors talking Husker men’s and women’s basketball. Up first is Patrick Gerhart as we complain about the Selection Committee and talk about Nebraska’s game tonight in the NIT against Mississippi State.

Then Jill Heemstra is back to talk about the Husker women and their upcoming game against Arizona State. Find out also why there are Nebraska ties all over the Women’s NCAA Tournament, and we’ll also check in with our neighbors to the north (not Creighton, never Creighton) and see what the Jackrabbits have in store in their quest for a championship.

Plus, there’s this challenge we laid out for our fearless leader:

Five Heart Podcast Episode 60: Top Five Most Agonizing Husker Football Losses

Hello again.

Hoss and Hooch are back with another Top-5 list. Last week we talked about good things. This week…AGONIZING DEFEAT! Relive the dark days (and nights, oh so many nights) of Husker football, but do it with a laugh and, if you’re anything like these two, an alcoholic beverage or two.

Spoiler Alert: We really don’t like losing to ________.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 59: Top 5 Favorite Husker Football Wins

What is your favorite Cornhusker football victory in a non-championship season? Why did I have to get so weirdly specific there?

Do you have one? Could you come up with a top five? That was the challenge Hoss brought to the Five Heart Podcast this week.

Nothing from 1994, 1995, or 1997.

Believe it or not, it wasn’t extremely difficult coming up with my list. And it was Hoss’ idea, so I’m guessing he already had a few in mind. Remembering specific details or the emotion of a game was easy. Getting into the nitty gritty of what the game meant in the broader picture was fun.

Also, (SPOILER ALERT!!!) Joe Bauserman pass chart!

We also got some input from the CN crew, and encourage you to leave your top 5 in the comments.

The second installment of Wonder Why is here. @chadsmart and @mikedekalb break down the one and only album by Joey Scarbury to see if any other song on the album lives up to the standard set by Joey’s hit single, “Believe It Or Not (Theme from The Greatest American Hero).”

I hope they talk about the song being referenced on Seinfeld.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 58: More Hoops Talk with David McGee

You know you’re enjoying this. The Husker Men’s Basketball team finishes the regular season tomorrow at home, with a chance to avenge a loss to a Penn State team playing without one of their star players, in sophomore Mike Watkins.

In this week’s episode, Corn Nation’s David McGee is back to talk about the win over Indiana on Tuesday and to preview the game against the Nittany Lions. The win over the Hoosiers was a great bounce-back after the road loss at Illinois. And a win Sunday would ensure Nebraska stays in the top tier of the Big Ten and solidifies the double-bye for the Big Ten Tournament. And it’s always good to visit with David.

Also along Good News Avenue, the podcast is now on Google Play and PodBean, as well as Apple Podcasts and Stitcher as it has been. More ways to listen. All for your convenience.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 57: Patrick Gerhart on Nebrasketball

Six in a row. Keep that in mind. There are some men’s basketball teams that don’t win three games in a row. So Nebrasketball’s loss Sunday at Illinois isn’t the end of the world.

But damn…I live in Illinois. Do you know how many Illini fans are going to greet me by rubbing this win in my face?

None. Because no one cares about Illinois basketball. Illinois basketball is and has been irrelevant for several years.

Wait…that makes it worse.

IT’S NOT THAT BAD! Two regular season games and then the Big Ten Tournament.

This episode, I’m talking with Corn Nation’s Patrick Gerhart about how the Huskers have been playing the last few weeks and what the post-season could look like.

Positive Cynicism Ep 31: Run Forrest Run

@chadsmart has come up with a crazy idea for 2018. He will attempt to run a half marathon in October. Is it possible to go from couch potato to runner in eight months? He’ll either succeed or have to listen to @kevinhunsperger mock him for the next 10 years. In the latest installment of Positive Cynicism, Chad tells why he’s setting this goal and what he hopes to accomplish. It’s not just a personal goal, he’s also hoping to raise money for St. Jude’s Hospital. This is step one on a thousand step journey. Question Everything. Do something positive.

Well folks, another National Signing Day has come and gone. I know you stayed up to date on all of Wednesday’s happenings with the terrific coverage on CornNation.com. In this week’s episode, a three-way dance (a triple-threat match, if you will) has Hooch and Hoss joined by Corn Nation’s Recruiting Correspondent Rick “Ugly Dog” (his words, not mine) Cone to talk about the young men who decided to wear the N.

From the guys who signed scholarship offers to the largest walk-on class in recent memory, this coaching staff did something really incredible, and they deserve all of the accolades they receive.

You know who else deserves our appreciation? Joe Bauserman. Remember his outing in Nebraska those years back?

Yeah…that got brought up again. Thank you, Stanley Jean-Baptiste.

Positive Cynicism EP 30: XFL and Golden Knights surprises

At the request of Jittery Monkey Godfather Greg Mehochko (@thehooch36), @chadsmart is joined by Positive Cynicism unofficial co-host @mikedekalb (hockeytransplant.com) to discuss the first half of the NHL season. What’s has been the biggest surprise of the first half of the season? What team has been the biggest disappointment? Chad and Mike discuss this and more. Then Mike turns questioner and ask Chad his thoughts about his first five years of NHL Fandom. Oh, and there’s some comments regarding the 2020 return of the XFL as well.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 55: Husker Women’s Hoops with Jill Heemstra

This is a conversation a little too long in the making. Corn Nation’s Jill Heemstra joins Greg to talk about the Nebraska Women’s Basketball team.

The two cover the transition from Connie Yori to Amy Williams, the departure of Nebraska’s own Jessica Shepard and how it was not only the right move for the young lady, but how it also may have been the best outcome for the Huskers.

How does this squad look heading into the final month of the regular season (16-6 as of this recording, before the Illinois game)? And how did whispers of a post-season appearance in the WNIT transform into talk of a Women’s National Tournament berth? (Spoiler: May have had something to do with three consecutive wins over ranked teams.)

Nerds United Episode 89: Gunpowder Witch Creator Jordan Williams

Welcome to the first Nerds United episode of 2018. It’s been almost two months since the last episode. Hope you had some good holidays there.

My guest for episode 89 has been on the podcast before (it’s in the archives…somewhere between Numbers 1 and 88). Jordan Williams is a cornerstone of Stache Publishing, frequently discussed here on the show. Jordan has written, drawn, and released two issues of his book Gunpowder Witch already. But all during the month of February, you can support his Kickstarter campaign to fund his entirely finished four-issue graphic novel for Gunpowder Witch.

Gunpowder Witch, in its simplest form, takes the historical accounts of the Salem Witch Trials and fictionalizes them by making the “witches” super-powered individuals who are misunderstood by their Puritan peers.

The conversation also takes a tangential turn to talk briefly about religion, but not in any way that is condescending. In other words…there’s a little something for everyone.

But the main thing is to support the Kickstarter. And I’ll update this post with the link tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy the show!

Positive Cynicism Ep 29: Wonder Why; Safety Dance

On the inaugural installment of Wonder Why, @chadsmart is joined by hockey and music enthusiast @mikedekalb (www.hockeytransplant.com) to try and figure out certain bands only mustered one hit throughout their career. The fans voted and the first subject of discussion is the Canadian synth heavy band, Men Without Hats.

https://youtu.be/AjPau5QYtYs

They didn’t care about friends who didn’t want to dance but danced themselves to a number 3 hit with “Safety Dance.” What other songs on the album Rhythm of Youth had the potential to be hits? Chad and Mike break down the album debating the merits of the other songs while projecting their version of history to see what could have been.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 54: Heart and Beating Iowa

When we publish a new episode on a Monday, you know that the train has essentially jumped the tracks. How and why we ended up recording at about 11:00 on a Sunday night definitely is mentioned. But what wasn’t mentioned was the fact that we should really try to plan better.

BUT TODDLERS DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR PLANS!

Moving on…a new Husker commit sent out an interesting tweet in response to “keyboard tough guys” (my word, not that of Cam Jones, a new commit at Safety who, according to Hoss, could transition to linebacker if necessary). He’s a big body, physical playmaker. But less about that and more about the tweet…copied and pasted here.

It hearkens back to why Brian and I named this show the Five Heart Podcast in the first place. “Stars” and ratings don’t tell the whole store.

Moving on…

It was a successful weekend for Husker Basketball, as the men and women both took care of #EvilIowa. And the Husker Wrestling team celebrated Senior Day with a win on Sunday at the Devany Center.

But we all know why you’re really here…to hear how Hoss would book a Wrestlemania Main Event if he could. But you have to stick around to the end for that gem.

Have a great week, everyone. GBR! WTDO!

Positive Cynicism 28: State of the Podcast

In the annual State of the Podcast address, host @chadsmart (follow him) lays out the plans for Positive Cynicism in the year 2018. New features. New focuses. What does the year have in store? It’s going to be an interesting ride.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 53: How to Date in 20-1-8

Hoss and Hooch are back in an all-new episode. Now don’t let the name fool you. The guys are talking a myriad of topics this week, including the cold winter weather’s effects on every day life like work and gym habits. Fellas, what length shorts do you like to wear to the gym? Did you know what one of the guys on this show is a short-shorts type of guy? And what role did short shorts play in Nebraska basketball’s twenty-point win over #23 Michigan?

The guys also question why baseball coaches still wear uniforms like they’re about to take the field to play and wonder if/when the manager’s attire will evolve.

And not to bury the lede, but since one of the guys is single, we do discuss dating in modern times. Things used to be so much simpler.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 52: Hooch and Hoss Sit in a Diner

At least that’s what it feels like. Two not-so-old guys sitting in their booth drinking coffee, talking about the weather and then current happenings with our favorite team.

That is probably a conversation that happens all across the Great Cornhusker State on a weekly basis with farmers and ranchers, bankers and hobos alike. But we have microphones, so they can suck it!

In this week’s episode, we talk a little bit about UCF’s Peach Bowl win over Auburn, and now that makes them the best team in the country, since Auburn beat Alabama and Georgia (transitive property, y’all). Scott Frost is bringing his entire undefeated staff to Lincoln. We talk about some of that coaching staff, like the recent addition of Barrett Ruud.

And there’s a mention of another “Rude,” Ravishing Rick, and the time he wore tights with a woman’s (Jake ‘the Snake’ Roberts’ wife) face on them. INSTANT HEAT!

Related image

And the weekly wrestling report that didn’t involve ring ropes, but rather, names like Taylor Venz.

In other words…I need a flannel shirt, a Carhart coat, and a John Deere hat and “my booth” at the diner.

I can’t wait to retire!

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 51: Nebrasketball with David McGee

It’s a new year, yes it is!

(These are the jokes…you can laugh or you can sit there.)

Don’t look now, but the Nebraska Men’s Basketball team is faring pretty nicely in the 2017-18 season. *knocks on wood*

After a one-point loss to freakin’ Kansas, the boys have started a little winning streak, up to and including the 70-55 win at Northwestern this past week. In this episode, Greg visits with Corn Nation’s David McGee. He’s not on the masthead…but neither am I. Anyway, aside from being one of our best photographers, David is also a huge Nebrasketball fan, and has contributed plenty of hoops pieces over the years.

So we talk about the win over NW, the overall look of the team this season, and what lies ahead.

And as a bonus, we spend a few minutes at the end making fun of Iowa. So there’s something for everyone!

Positive Cynicism Ep 27: Charitable New Year

Kicking off 2018, @ My 1-2-3 Cents podcast host @kevinhunsperger joins @chadsmart to spread some positivity. The two discuss Kevin’s recent Ugly Christmas Suit fundraiser as well as the importance of donating time in addition of money to help make a difference. In a society filled with hate and anger, it’s important to keep the cynicism to a minimum and remember a little positivity can go a long way.

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 50: Tanner Lee, O-Line, and NFL Playoffs

Well, Husker fans got some news Thursday that may or may not have been expected.

Of course, that’s no longer news to you. But it did mean fodder for the conversation on this week’s episode of the Five Heart Podcast. What are Tanner’s chances of being drafted, and where does that leave the Huskers’ depth chart with Patrick O’Brien and Tristan Gebbia in Lincoln and now Adrian Martinez headed to the Great Cornhusker State.

Also, what can former Husker player and new Offensive Line Coach Greg Austin do to rebuild the much-maligned offensive line, and how will he utilize the players at his disposal to put the best group together?

There’s also some NFL talk as the League approaches the playoffs. And Greg goes on an anti-Patriots diatribe that should make most fans happy (assuming you aren’t a Patriots fan…but how can you be a Patriots fan and also have a soul?).

And at the end, just before signing off…HUSKER WRESTLING MAKES AN APPEARANCE! Is it worth it to stick around for that blurb? Maybe not. But hey…it’s wrestling.

Positive Cynicism EP 26: Is The Last Jedi that bad?

Eric Bennett returns to the show to continue the discussion of Star Wars. Eric and host @chadsmart look at fan criticism towards The Last Jedi and discuss if it’s warranted or another example of social media fauxrage. One thing they can agree on is the Star Wars universe needs more focus on 4-LOM and Zuckuss.

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 49: Talking Championships and Recruiting

In this week’s episode, not only is Greg back, but he has two great guests lined up.

First, we’ll sit down once again with Ty Peteranetz, the Corn Nation Volleyball Guru. The guys talk about Nebraska’s dynamic run through the final four on its way to claiming a national title last Saturday night in Kansas City.

Part of the discussion is about the young ladies who made up this championship team. Women like Briana Holman, who graduated from UNL earlier in the day and won a championship that night. Women like Kelly Hunter, who received post-season accolades. Women like Mikaela Foecke, who was seemingly unstoppable throughout the tournament.

Then we switch things up and Corn Nation’s newest contributor, Rick Cone joins the show in his debut appearance. We talk all things recruiting with the first ever early signing period for college football this week. Who is N? And what do they bring to Lincoln?

Another solid show for your weekend enjoyment. Merry Christmas from everyone at Jittery Monkey and the Five Heart Podcast.

Positive Cynicism Ep 25: Awakening the Force

On the eve of the release of The Last Jedi, @chadsmart is joined by Eric Bennett to discuss Disney taking over the Star Wars franchise. The anticipation and reaction to The Force Awakens. Speculation of what will happen in The Last Jedi. Subtle digs at the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All this and more in this episode. There are no spoilers for Last Jedi so listen without fear if you haven’t seen Last Jedi.

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 48: Hoss and Ty Talk VB Final Four and Scott Frost

For the first time in Five Heart Podcast history, Greg is not on the podcast, at least in a verbal form. Due to “technical difficulties,” Greg is only on the show as a producer, feeder of information, and fact-checker.

In other words, this will be the best episode yet!

It’s Hoss and Ty, and the guys are talking about the Husker women’s volleyball team trip to Kansas City and the Final Four that begins tonight. What makes this team special, and how does Ty see the final three matches of the college volleyball season going?

Then the two talk about the HUsker football program, Scott Frost, and his coaching staff. There’s also been a recent uptick in recruiting as Frost and his coaches have been hitting the trail hard to make the most out of their short time before the early signing period.

And to put a bow on this episode, and to tie in with a pop culture global phenomenon, Hoss and Ty pair up the Big Ten footballs programs and coaches with what they believe to be their Star Wars universe counterparts. It’s a great way to finish the episode, and the guys have a lot of fun with it in advance of the film hitting theaters this weekend.

Enjoy the show, share with your friends, and May the Frost Be with You.

Positive Cynicism EP 24: Star Wars Fandom

After an extended hiatus while the Positive Cynicism podcast studio was built, @chadsmart is back with the first installment of a year-end series looking at the popularity of Star Wars. Stan Young, a Star Wars fan for 40 years, joins the show to discuss why Star Wars appeals to him and what crazy lengths he’s gone to over the years to feed his fandom.

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 47: Nebrasketball, Fatherhood, Feeling Frosty

This week, Hoss is busy with finals. So Greg has brought in another name from Corn Nation, Patrick Gerhart.

Patrick specializes in #Nebrasketball, so we talk about Tim Miles’ tenure, off-season attrition and addition of personnel, and this week’s win against Number-14 Minnesota. The guys talk about Pinnacle Bank Arena and what some athletes may see in the program that would bring them to Lincoln.

Since both Greg and Patrick have children under two, and since Ty just became a dad for the first time this week, the guys share some of their experiences, fond memories, and helpful hints.

Lastly, there’s a new head coach. In one of those moments that you’ll never forget where you were, Greg was on his friend’s roof hanging Christmas lights. But the Sunday of the introductory press conference, all eyes were glued.

Nerds United Episode 88: The Nostalgia Pop with Chad Smart

Which decade was better? The 1980’s or the 1990’s?

That was the question Positive Cynicism’s Chad Smart and I set out to debate in a Jittery Monkey Crossover. The conclusion we came to was that just like discussing politics on social media, no minds were going to be changed. So instead, we just talked about “the good old days.”

Music, television, movies…nothing was left untouched in the realm of pop culture. But you have to forgive our memories to an extent. As the old saying goes whenever I forget something, “I’ve slept since then.”

So come with us as we travel back in time (in a DeLorean or a TARDIS, I don’t care which) to relive some of our favorite memories. And be sure to join us on social media to share your favorite memories of the 80s and 90s. We all hit childhood at different times, so I’m curious to know what was popular when you were younger. Remember to Like and Share so others can have that nostalgia as well.

You are appreciated.

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 46: Times are Changing

Well, there was a football game on Black Friday and it didn’t go well. By that I mean it didn’t go well for anyone in the Great Cornhusker State.

“The best part of Iowa is I-80 West.” – Hoss

The bigger news happened the next day when Athletic Director Bill Moos announced changes to the coaching staff, relieving Mike Riley (and most of the assistants from their duties.

So when the new coach is hired this weekend, we will certainly have more to discuss.

Don’t forget – my wife is running in the Hot Chocolate 5k/15k (I don’t know which one she is running). And she’s raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network. Can you help her achieve her modest goal?
