Five Heart Podcast Episode 100!!! Bah Gawd! That’s a winner!

So there I am, watching my niece’s kindergarten basketball game last Saturday morning. You know the type. They have fifteen-minute halves where the clock doesn’t stop. They don’t keep score. And it’s all about going out and having fun. No real rules. I was having a mild anxiety attack as kids were running the ball up the court. But hey, it gives them something to do after farming season (my sister married a farmer and they live in a small farming town…nice town).

So there I am, watching my niece’s game and I’m repping the Big Red. I have my Huskers hoodie on that Brett Baker delivered to me in person three years ago when he and his daughter Jessica went to the Nebraska-Illinois game in Champaign. You remember the one. The one we lost. [Expletive Deleted]. My dad says, not prompted at all, something along the lines of “I’m taking Illinois today.”

I laughed. Not mockingly. Not boisterously. Just laughed. Then after the game, my son and I went to “grandma and grandpa’s” house as my mom made pancakes and bacon for everyone. I watched a little of the game before and after breakfast, then helped my dad do some winterizing stuff outside.

Now I tell you all of that to tell you this. I DVRed the game and started watching it Saturday night. I finished watching it Wednesday evening before we started recording.

In this milestone 100th episode, we talk about the big win over Illinois and why Adrian Martinez and Devine Ozigbo are deserving of their conference accolades this week. We talk about science, but I can’t remember how we got on that topic.

Image result for science gif

And Patrick Gerhart joins us to talk about Nebrasketball’s hot start, including the win this week over Seton Hall!

Jon also has a story or two from his undergrad days and my son looks like he’s going to pee on his bed. So it was a wild and crazy night!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 99: So Close Against OSU

We already played the “moral victory” card. This was a loss. But hot damn, it was the best loss we’ve seen this team take in some time. It was fun to watch as a game. It was more fun to watch Urban Meyer squirm as the outcome was still in doubt late in the contest. It was really fun listening to 100,000 fans booing the home team as they headed to the locker room at halftime.

Listen, friends. We’re close. Closer than any of us thought. And as ridiculous as it may have seemed a few weeks ago, we still have the possibility of making a bowl game.

Up next: Illinois. And there’s no way the Fighting “We Don’t Know What to Call Ourselves” will win this weekend!

Nerds United Episode 111: Hanging Out at the 4204 Brewery

You read that right, true believers! In this very special “Field Trip Edition” of the podcast, Greg and Mike are hanging out and recording from the 4204 Main Street Brewing Company Taphouse/Production Brewery. In other words, if you’re in Illinois, Missouri, or Kansas and you see a six-pack of a delicious 4204 brew, it was brewed right behind where we were sitting.

We were very fortunate that the good people at the brewery, from the owners to the Head Brewer Keith to Deja the Taphouse Manager and provider of fine ales and lagers, opened their doors to us. Because we like beer. And they have beer. It’s a perfect symbiotic relationship.

So the first thirty or so minutes of the podcast, we were actually streaming and recording live on Facebook. Three people. Two microphones. We’re podcasters, not math geniuses. Anyway, that first half hour was spent with Keith learning all about the beer making process and also trying different beers. You’ll notice in the featured photo that Greg finished his beers. He ended up bringing two growlers home, including the Tickle for his wife.

After we let Keith get back to work, Mike and Greg talk about some comic book topics, including Return of Wolverine, Heroes in Crisis, and Cry Havoc.

There’s a giveaway we’re working on. It is for The Comic Book Story of Beer. Fitting, right? Let’s do this. If you read this, share the post on Facebook. I’ll enter all who do into a random drawing and the winner will get the graphic novel delivered to their front door!

That’s pretty much it. Enjoy the show, and thank you again to Keith, Deja, and everyone who helped make our trip to 4204 Brewery possible!

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 206: Bo Sawyer

It’s almost Halloween, and we’re celebrating it here at My 1-2-3 Cents with one-third of the Midwest Monster Hunters, Bo Sawyer. He has been a part of Stride Pro Wrestling for nearly a year but has more than a decade of experience under his belt on the indy wrestling scene.

On the show, we talk about what monsters Bo and his partners have hunted and what’s still out there to conquer. You can follow Bo, Jason Tiller and Blaine Black here. Also, be sure to weigh in on the Who Should Have Been Champion tournament on the My 1-2-3 Cents Facebook page.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 196: Wrestling Under the Influence ‘Rebel’

Oh Hell Yeah

When Nichole Pate was 14 years old she had no idea what a rebel she’d turn out to be. She simply went to school on a Monday morning wearing an Austin 3:16 t-shirt in 1998. She was sent home as a result. What happened next is pretty awesome.

Nichole and I have a Rebel IPA by Sam Adams as she shares her story. Check out the podcast to find out more… And be sure to visit the @my123cents on Instagram for more pics.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 181: Things Just Got Personal

Heading for the Cage

I’ve been a longtime fan of pro wrestling. And I’m proud to say I’ve been involved with some of the finest independent wrestling companies in southern Illinois. I’m extremely grateful for my current role as the ring announcer in Stride Pro Wrestling.

But now I find myself once again backed into a corner and having to defend not only myself but my 12-year-old daughter. You can hear the whole story on the podcast this week. But yes, I am stepping into the ring, this time surrounded by a steel cage against Roger Matheus on Saturday, May 26 at Pinckneyville High School.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 171: Tony Flood

The Northern Saint

About two years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Tony Flood. He was in the main event of the first-ever Stride Pro Wrestling show. He impressed me that night, despite not walking away with the Stride Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Championship. Flood went on to win the Legacy Championship twice but never received another shot at the big title until now. He faces his childhood buddy, Jay Spade, on Saturday, March 3 in Christopher, Illinois.

Tony and I talk about his past with Jay and his career up until this point. He’s not even 30 but already has more than a decade of experience in the ring under his belt. We also discuss his influences and why he considers this upcoming match to be the most important of his career.

I’d like to encourage you to also check out the My 1-2-3 Cents YouTube channel. Please subscribe and check out some of the videos there. I have new content going up almost daily now. Thank for the support.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 158: The Ugly Christmas Suit Guys

Ugly Christmas Suit Guys

In 2014 my buddy Tom Harness from Harness Digital Marketing started a one-man fundraising campaign. He put on an ugly Christmas suit made by Shinesty and Opposuits. Through the years the project has grown and for 2017, Tom has asked me to join the effort.

Ugly-Christmas-Suit

You can make a donation here and help the group Children’s Home + Aid. It’s a group that works with adoptive families in southern Illinois. They provide year-round support to those families. Right now they serve about 150 families and get no assistance from the state of Illinois. So we want to make a big difference in their lives.

Tom is a digital marketing guru. He shares tips for wrestlers to build a brand. Tom is also an old school wrestling fan. He recalls guys like Junkyard Dog, Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Jimmy Hart. But I’ve recently reintroduced Tom to wrestling and he’s attended a few Stride Pro Wrestling and Cape Championship Wrestling shows.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 153: Wrestling with Craft Beer

Beer and Bodyslams

Beer and wrestling seemingly go hand and hand. I had a big vision for this week’s episode. I attended the Big Muddy Monster Brew Fest in Murphysboro, Illinois with some friends over the weekend. Since I didn’t have a guest I thought it would be fun to find different craft beers and tie them in with wrestling. The first few reviews recorded just fine, but somewhere along the way, the other recordings stopped. I’m disappointed this happened, but I do believe I still have some good content in this episode. I’ll plan better for next year, as I do like the idea of pairing wrestlers with beer.

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 38: Beat the Ditch Weasels

It’s a new episode as Hoss Reuter sits across the table (a couple states away) to talk some Nebraska football.

On this episode:

  • The road win at Illinois, and Greg’s super good time.
  • Looking ahead to the Wisconsin Ditch Weasels.
  • Hoss and several other members of the Corn Nation family getting together this week.
  • Chili and cinnamon rolls and why it’s are WRONG (and why it should remind you of Wisconsin running all over Nebraska in 2014)!

Youre Wrong John C Mcginley GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

  • What’s Hoss’s favorite “unsung hero” offensive scheme?

It’s a big weekend in Lincoln with a look at the past (the 1997 National Championship team being honored) and a glimpse into the possible future with some big-name recruits in attendance.

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 37: The Broken Heart Podcast

Corn Nation was rocked this week with the news of the passing of one of our own as my “good friend, fellow Husker fan, and longtime broadcast buddy” Brian Towle passed away unexpectedly overnight.

To say we were not prepared for that is an absolute understatement. Brian not only did so much writing for Corn Nation, but was a key figure in the behind-the-scenes operations as well.

In the newest episode of the show, I am joined with Corn Nation’s head honcho Jon Johnston as we talk about Brian’s joining Corn Nation years ago, bringing me in, and all that he did for not just the site, but the community around it, his fellow contributors and all of the people he interacted with online.

I also have a few special compilation pieces in honor of my dear friend. Rest in peace, Brian.

There is a GoFundMe for funeral expenses and such for Brian. Every little bit helps, and Husker Nation has already risen to the occasion in great capacity, but there is still a bit that needs to be done. If you can help, please do.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 116: Red Wants Gold

Stride Pro Wrestling has been around for nearly a year. The company was founded in Marion, Illinois and puts on monthly shows at the CMA Dojo inside the Illinois Star Centre Mall. Not only are there the monthly shows, Stride offers a training school for future wrestlers. Red Daniels is the first graduate of the program.

Red was green in those early days but has quickly developed into a great talent. His tactics aren’t always above the board, as he’s joined forces with “Hitman” Jake Capone and “Big” Roger Matheus as the Midwest Mafia. It’s proven to be a smart move, as the Daniels and Capone have earned a shot against Stride Pro Wrestling tag team champions Jay Spade and Joey O’Riley.

That championship match happens Saturday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Several other matches have been announced, head to the Stride Pro Wrestling Facebook page or My 1-2-3 Cents for more details. (Photo for this post courtesy: Steve Belcher)

First, thank you all for checking out this podcast. This is episode 100 and I wouldn’t be where I am today with the show without your support. I truly appreciate the fact that people are listening and sharing this podcast with their friends. I am focused on finding more quality guest to have on each week as the show moves forward.

For the 100th episode, I was able to book Bushwhacker Luke as my guest. Big thanks to Jerry Travelstead for helping make this happen. Jerry is a school superintendent in Pinckneyville, Illinois. On Saturday, Nov. 5 Bushwhacker Luke will be wrestling at a fundraiser show for the district.

bushwhackerluke-show
Luke talks about his career before, during and after WWE. He also provides an update on his longtime tag team partner Butch Miller. If you live in the area, come on our November 5 and meet Luke. There will be opportunities for photos and autographs too. I’ll be there along with local favorites like Heath Hatton, Ax Allwardt, Farmer Billy Hills and Tony Flood among others.

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 5

Greg and Brian are back talking recruiting, recruiting, a little about the road win over Northwestern, recruiting, and I think Illinois is mentioned once or twice.

Seriously…

Recruits gather for a group picture during the Oregon game. Photo Credit: David McGee - Corn Nation
Recruits gather for a group picture during the Oregon game. Photo Credit: David McGee – Corn Nation

A simple question of “which recruits are visiting Nebraska this week” (paraphrased) turned into a 35-minute breakdown that included commits planning on joining the Huskers in 2017, athletes on the schedule for visits down the road, and yes, who will be in Lincoln for the Homecoming Game.

Other high points of the show were discussing the following:

  • Tommy Armstrong (Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week)
  • A difference of opinion on the four defensive linemen who departed during the off-season
  • Nebraska vs Illinois in the return of a year ago
  • Greg is interrupted by his dogs, including when his one dog “attacks” him. It’s all saved for posterity.
  • And Brian sings!

This show is brought to you by A&W Root Beer and the Raising Cane’s Chicken, because that’s what Brian was eating and Greg had himself a root beer float.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 80: The Ace of Wrestling

Bob & Randy Orton
Randy & Bob Orton

Whether you know him as “Ace” or “Cowboy” Bob Orton is one of the all-time greats of professional wrestling.  The WWE Hall of Famer has had a lengthy career and is still active in the ring. On Saturday, June 4 Orton teams up with Bull Bronson against Dalton Diamond and Cash Bordin at the Stride Pro Wrestling show. Bell time is 6:30 p.m. at CMA in the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion.

In this week’s show Kevin chats with Orton about his career (he was on the first live wrestling card I attended in 1984), the evolution of wrestling and his son Randy Orton.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 68: An Ax to Grind

ax wins
Ax wins the title

Through the years I’ve had several opportunities to be a wrestling referee, manager, ring announcer and commentator.  For the last couple of years the wrestling scene where I live (southern Illinois) has been on life support.  But now a promotion is changing all that.

CMA Pro Wrestling made its debut Saturday, March 5.  The show featured several talented wrestlers from this region and beyond.  A packed house watched at the CMA Marital Arts Center in Marion, Illinois as the first champion was crowned.

Ax Allwardt beat three other men in a fatal four way contest.  Fan favorite Heath Hatton nearly had the match won after spearing the near 400 pound Frank Wyatt.  But the opportunistic Allwardt interrupted the pin and tossed Hatton to the floor, where the fourth man in the match Tony Flood was recovering after being dropped by Wyatt.

I managed to get a quick (and I mean quick) interview with the new champ.  He talks about his past in the business and his future as the new CMA Pro Wrestling Champion.

Also on this week’s show the winners of our Road to WrestleMania contest.  Thanks to all who participated and keep listening, Chad and I will have more contests in the future.

Nerds United Episode 18

Last time, you heard about MY story with Free Comic Book Day.

This time, we go to my “local” comic book shop. I use quotes because the place

Due to the whole "job" thing, I got there after the big crowds. But still - COMICS!
Due to the whole “job” thing, I got there after the big crowds. But still – COMICS!

is about an hour away. But ever since I stepped foot in Twilight Comics in 2009, I have always been treated like family. And I look around and see the same treatment given to everyone else who comes in the door.

So it is my pleasure to talk with Brian Hillier, the owner of Twilight Comics (Shiloh, IL), and a guy I have been fortunate enough to get to know over the years. We talk about his beginnings in comics and, YES, we even discuss the origin of the name Twilight (or as I say, he was “twilight” before twilight was “cool” – and I put quotes on that because those God-awful books somehow became God-awful movies).

A look at some of the work from artist David Carr. Find more at www.artmonkeyworld.com
A look at some of the work from artist David Carr. Find more at www.artmonkeyworld.com

Then in the second part of the show, I visit with artist David Carr, whose ArtMonkeyWorld paintings really took off when he realized that people like art with a Doctor Who twist.

We have three of David’s prints in our home, and someday, I’ll commission him for a one-of-a-kind piece.

You’ll have to listen to the show to find out what that would be.

As always, if you like Nerds United, share it with your friends. We’ll get on iTunes or some other auto-publisher eventually. I appreciate your patience and your continued support. Like, Share, and comment on Facebook (the only comments I get on here are all spam which I clear out without reading – and I don’t want to miss your thoughts.
