So there I am, watching my niece’s kindergarten basketball game last Saturday morning. You know the type. They have fifteen-minute halves where the clock doesn’t stop. They don’t keep score. And it’s all about going out and having fun. No real rules. I was having a mild anxiety attack as kids were running the ball up the court. But hey, it gives them something to do after farming season (my sister married a farmer and they live in a small farming town…nice town).

So there I am, watching my niece’s game and I’m repping the Big Red. I have my Huskers hoodie on that Brett Baker delivered to me in person three years ago when he and his daughter Jessica went to the Nebraska-Illinois game in Champaign. You remember the one. The one we lost. [Expletive Deleted]. My dad says, not prompted at all, something along the lines of “I’m taking Illinois today.”

I laughed. Not mockingly. Not boisterously. Just laughed. Then after the game, my son and I went to “grandma and grandpa’s” house as my mom made pancakes and bacon for everyone. I watched a little of the game before and after breakfast, then helped my dad do some winterizing stuff outside.

Now I tell you all of that to tell you this. I DVRed the game and started watching it Saturday night. I finished watching it Wednesday evening before we started recording.

In this milestone 100th episode, we talk about the big win over Illinois and why Adrian Martinez and Devine Ozigbo are deserving of their conference accolades this week. We talk about science, but I can’t remember how we got on that topic.

And Patrick Gerhart joins us to talk about Nebrasketball’s hot start, including the win this week over Seton Hall!

Jon also has a story or two from his undergrad days and my son looks like he’s going to pee on his bed. So it was a wild and crazy night!

Hello all and welcome to another entertaining episode of the Five Heart Podcast. This is the first episode in a series that should stretch all summer and almost to opening week, where we visit with a different Corn Nation staff member and learn a little more about them.

Our first victim, I mean guest…Jill Heemstra. Now you will remember that Jill has been on the podcast before, particularly to discuss Husker women’s basketball. So this time around, we learn a little more about Jill, what brought her to Nebraska and Husker fandom.

We talk about some of Jill’s favorite moments in Husker athletics, her journey to Corn Nation, and some of her moments of glory on Corn Nation, like the Kickoff Poetry, particularly when the poems, like Northwestern’s alternate uniforms, went gothic!

This was shared in the CN Slack Chat Room, and I think it’s a cool idea to share a Nebraska twitter account each week that really doesn’t have anything to do with the Huskers. Or maybe I just love dogs.

Hello again and welcome to a new episode of the Five Heart Podcast. Thank you ALL for downloading our last episode, our Top Five Most Agonizing Football Losses episode.

Some of you didn’t want us trudging up such painful memories. But it was very cathartic, and will a few adult beverages, a lot of fun. It was also our second-most-downloaded show in the history of the Five Heart Podcast. So…no pressure to outdo that one.

This episode features two Corn Nation contributors talking Husker men’s and women’s basketball. Up first is Patrick Gerhart as we complain about the Selection Committee and talk about Nebraska’s game tonight in the NIT against Mississippi State.

Then Jill Heemstra is back to talk about the Husker women and their upcoming game against Arizona State. You know you’re enjoying this. The Husker Men’s Basketball team finishes the regular season tomorrow at home, with a chance to avenge a loss to a Penn State team playing without one of their star players, in sophomore Mike Watkins.

In this week’s episode, Corn Nation’s David McGee is back to talk about the win over Indiana on Tuesday and to preview the game against the Nittany Lions. The win over the Hoosiers was a great bounce-back after the road loss at Illinois. And a win Sunday would ensure Nebraska stays in the top tier of the Big Ten and solidifies the double-bye for the Big Ten Tournament. And it’s always good to visit with David.

But damn…I live in Illinois. Do you know how many Illini fans are going to greet me by rubbing this win in my face?

None. Because no one cares about Illinois basketball. Illinois basketball is and has been irrelevant for several years.

Wait…that makes it worse.

When we publish a new episode on a Monday, you know that the train has essentially jumped the tracks. How and why we ended up recording at about 11:00 on a Sunday night definitely is mentioned. But what wasn’t mentioned was the fact that we should really try to plan better.

BUT TODDLERS DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR PLANS!

Moving on…a new Husker commit sent out an interesting tweet in response to “keyboard tough guys” (my word, not that of Cam Jones, a new commit at Safety who, according to Hoss, could transition to linebacker if necessary). He’s a big body, physical playmaker. But less about that and more about the tweet…copied and pasted here.

It hearkens back to why Brian and I named this show the Five Heart Podcast in the first place. “Stars” and ratings don’t tell the whole store.

Moving on…

It was a successful weekend for Husker Basketball, as the men and women both took care of #EvilIowa. And the Husker Wrestling team celebrated Senior Day with a win on Sunday at the Devany Center.

But we all know why you’re really here…to hear how Hoss would book a Wrestlemania Main Event if he could. But you have to stick around to the end for that gem.

Patrick specializes in #Nebrasketball, so we talk about Tim Miles’ tenure, off-season attrition and addition of personnel, and this week’s win against Number-14 Minnesota. The guys talk about Pinnacle Bank Arena and what some athletes may see in the program that would bring them to Lincoln.

Since both Greg and Patrick have children under two, and since Ty just became a dad for the first time this week, the guys share some of their experiences, fond memories, and helpful hints.

Lastly, there’s a new head coach. In one of those moments that you’ll never forget where you were, Greg was on his friend’s roof hanging Christmas lights. But the Sunday of the introductory press conference, all eyes were glued.

To quote Thin Lizzy, “the boys are back in town.” That being said, Greg and Brian are here with a brand new episode. The show kicks off with talk of Nebraska baseball’s Big Ten opening win over Indiana.

Meanwhile, Nebraska basketball suffered two losses this week, as the men’s team saw the departure of sophomore big man Ed Morrow Jr. The women’s basketball team lost Jessica Shepard to transfer as well.

Women’s basketball talk brings up the dominance of UCONN, and if it’s bad for the sport.

We go back to Bloomington’s baseball field(turf) and talk about the playing surface in a few other ballparks.

And of course, there’s food talk, like this ungodly monstrosity in Arlington now.

Nebraska football, basketball, and baseball are all *close* – close to being those teams that the fans want them to be. The baseball team just beat Cal Poly on Saturday in a double header. Spring practice is set to resume this week, and the upcoming Red/White Game in a couple weeks could bring with it twenty or so four- and five-star recruits to Lincoln.

But what would put Darin Erstad on the hot seat, or possibly get him out of Lincoln (which we hope doesn’t happen), and who’s on the short list of names to replace him, should that come to pass. Plus, who’s standing out this Spring on the gridiron?

Episode 27 is here and Greg and Brian are talking about the first (and only) Snack Cracker Tournament of Champions. But that can’t be the only tournament discussed. So the guys talk about the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament in Washington DC. What has gone right for the conference? What hasn’t? And what’s the big picture?

Despite the late season slump and the overtime loss to Penn State in the first round of the tournament, Tim Miles is expected to be back next year, as Husker fans learned just moments after the final buzzer sounded Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Nebraska Baseball is off to a slow start, but there may be a reason behind that, as we learned that Nebraska has the nation’s toughest schedule so far.

And the Husker wrestling team is preparing to send its athletes to St. Louis for the NCAA National Tournament.

Well, after taking a week off so the Bri-Guy could recover after National Signing Day, the Five Heart Podcast is back!

On the docket this week is a recap of Brian’s signing day schedule, also known as “NO SLEEP TIL LINCOLN!” Actually, that would be a really good recruiting motto for the future.

Open scholarships after signing day mean a lot of things…dedicated walk-ons earn a scholly, or you look outside the program and see which graduate transfers you can lure to Nebraska.

The 2017 NFL Draft is approaching, and we have a list of Huskers that may or may not be chosen on Draft Weekend. There’s some dissension in the ranks, so if you agree disagree, or think we left someone out, be sure to leave a comment!

Finally…Nebrasketball. Damn it all.

Episode 21…recorded the night of (another?) disappointing Nebrasketball loss.

Damn.

It seems the most frustrating part of this is that this is a Nebraska men’s basketball team that is competing very well with these other schools, but they just can’t close it out. And it sucks.

But that’s not all we’re discussing in the episode that, if weeks were years in the podcast realm, would be old enough to drink. We also talk about the once-again busy recruiting season, the final push before National Signing Day (Wednesday, February 1…Brian will be busy all day).

Also, some tomfoolery afoot about sleep number beds and wives who steal covers (it’s okay – they aren’t listening anyway). Also, fried chicken wrapped up (or sometimes the wrapping) of some of your favorite Mexican foods (Mexican in name only…and that is also suspect.

It’s Episode 15 of the Five Heart Podcast and Brian and Greg start off by spending a few minutes talking about the amazing come-from-behind win for the Nebraska women’s volleyball team. We dubbed it Nebraska’s most impressive comeback ever.

We also discuss bowl season, and a very central location that could be utilized for a bowl game (if we needed a 43rd bowl game). We talk about the Music City Bowl featuring the once-overrated Tennessee Volunteers and the once-overrated Nebraska Cornhuskers. That will be fun. Stay tuned for that one on Friday, December 30.

We tried getting out of there without mentioning the loss to Creighton, but sadly were unable to do so…so consider it mentioned.
