Five Heart Podcast Episode 105: Husker Volleyball Seeking Back-to-Back Titles

Well, we’re not talking Nebrasketball today. But Corn Nation’s Volleyball Guru Ty Peteranetz and I have lots of volleyball talk to get you geared up for tonight’s National Semifinal Volleyball match.

After sweeping their way to the National Final Four, defeating Kentucky and Oregon on the way, the Huskers return to Minneapolis for the second consecutive week, and take on another Big Ten team in the semifinal, facing off against Illinois for the third time of the year.

Ty will be in Minneapolis for as long as the Huskers are there. We wish him safe travels and a long weekend.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 103: Previewing Husker VB vs Kentucky

On this week’s episode, made available with hours to spare ahead of the regional semifinal match, Greg is joined by Ty Peteranetz to discuss the 2018 Husker VB squad.

How did this Husker volleyball team come together? They certainly weathered the storm of a tough stretch of action in the country’s best volleyball conference. It’s a fact. Of the eight games in the regional semifinals taking place today, six of them include Big Ten teams. Suck it, SEC.

With graduation looming for all-American Mikaela Foecke and others, who does Ty foresee stepping into the top-dog role next year, and who’s already making a name for themselves on this young Nebraska squad?

What did the Huskers do right down the stretch and what do they have to do to win the Minnesota Regional that includes a Gopher squad that has beaten our beloved Big Red twice?

And how is Ty doing as the dad of a newly crowned one-year-old, and how are we handling those odd child smells?

It’s all in this episode of the Five Heart Podcast.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 97: WE WON! Now on to Bethune-Cookman

WE (by that we mean the Huskers) WON A DAMN GAME! And racked up over 600 yards of offense, the defense looked serviceable, and Eric Lee saved the day!

We are out of practice recording a victorious podcast. But let me break it down for you as best I can:

  • Jon is grumpy from dealing with the winos. After the win, he upgraded them to Boone’s Farm
  • Hoss is a perfectly responsible non-traditional student in the teaching field, as we kept the episode short so he could return to his lesson plan
  • Hooch got pissed off that they went for two

Five Heart Podcast Episode 96: Losing to Northwestern and the Chair Trophy

Due to schedule conflicts and life, Hoss and Hooch had to combine two episodes into one this week, meaning they aren’t sitting down with the enemy for a preview chat. But Jon Damn Johnston is here to save the day!

Jon (pictured here with the trophy the Huskers will be bringing back to Lincoln) was able to talk with some of the people who were able to make the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy possible from the Minnesota side. We’ll have that audio for you at the end, so stay tuned.

Meanwhile, the rest of the show is a lot of not pointing fingers at referees, continuing to preach patience, and JDJ reminding us that this week, “it’s personal!”

So strap in for another great show. And GO BIG RED!

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 44: Where Do We Go from Here?

I’m going to let Good Ol JR call that one…

Ohio State loss was expected, maybe not to the extent it ended up. But Minnesota? MINNE-FREAKIN’-SOTA???

So this is what it has come to. Nebraska is not good at football in 2017. The signs were there. All the way back to the close win against Arkansas State in Week One. We know change is coming. We know it won’t happen during the season. We don’t know who will be taking over in 2018.

What we do know is that we sure as hell better beat Iowa. But hell, even that match-up depresses me.

I want to stress a few things again:

A. Don’t tweet at the players. Don’t do it. Tweet at me. Tweet at Hoss. Tweet at the Big Red Cobcast folks. And share that info with the angry people on twitter. I like to think that the people who take the time to listen to this show aren’t the same people who tweet at players. Don’t do it.

2. This is the hard lesson for many of us, but remember that there is more to life than college football. We at Corn Nation know that more than anybody.

D (to make you smile). We live on the most boring street in the United States of America where nothing even remotely dangerous will ever happen. Period.

We’ll all stick together…in all kinds of weather.

GO BIG RED and WTDG!

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 43: Reuter’s March to UCF

When I hear or see “scorched earth,” I immediately think of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman’s “March to the Sea” in the Civil War. But after the overtime loss to Northwestern, it was time for Hoss Reuter to go scorched earth.

The only problem is that after six days, even that was tempered a bit. While Hoss believes the end of the Mike Riley era is nigh, his scorched earth approach was quite mild. I’m no historian, but if Sherman would have marched to Savannah like Hoss railed on the coaching staff, the North may have been turned away in Macon.

That being said, we believe a change is in the air. And after talking about the loss to the Wildcats, we discuss the “rumor and innuendo” that surrounds the Husker football program. And what can be done to get the best in-state athletes to play for Big Red, so that the Noah Fant’s of the world rip apart Ohio State while wearing the Scarlet and Cream?

Also we hit up the Facebook page and talk about the Tunnel Walk and playing for pride, if nothing else.

And stick around to the end to find out how to win a FREE box of food from Hello Fresh! Lots going on this week and we do appreciate you listening and sharing the show with the Husker fans in your life.

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 26

Well, this was one hell of a podcast.

Fresh off the heels of the Nebraska Men’s Basketball team’s third straight disappointing loss, this time at the hands of tournament-bound Minnesota, the guys talk largely about the team’s shortcomings, and how it can’t be blamed on one person, player or coach. It comes down to this: It Tim Miles’ head IS on the chopping block, what can spare his termination?

And for the record, we are both big Tim Miles fans. And as Greg has said numerous times, he wants Miles at the helm when Nebraska gets that first tournament win. And Brian has said that whoever that coach is to achieve the feat gets a statue outside of the PBA.

But we end the show on a positive note, commending the Nebraska wrestlers who were top-ten pre-seeds to the Big Ten Tournament, including All American Eric Montoya, a 2-seed at 133 pounds.

First and foremost – HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!

The Huskers football team improved to 9-2 after a win over the Maryland Terrapins. But devastation strikes the Husker women’s volleyball team as they endure a five-set loss to #2 Minnesota.

Plus, we talk about #EvilIowa and their failures in recruiting. YES, WE TALK RECRUITING THAT ISN’T EVEN NEBRASKA!

Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast Episode 12

Brian fights through illness and injury and joins Greg once again for a brand new episode. The Huskers are 8-2 after knocking off Minnesota at Memorial Stadium.

There’s a lot less recruiting talk in this episode, but the guys branch out and talk about more than just the Husker football team. That’s right, the top-ranked volleyball team gets a few minutes at the beginning of the show. This episode was recorded Wednesday evening, a short time after Nebraska defeated #15 Penn State at the Devaney Center.

Also in the episode, Greg reveals his super powers of premonition, centered around this text conversation from Saturday night:

Greg's text conversation with his friend Josh. You'll have to ignore (or at least forgive) the poor use of grammar.

And we all know how that ended:

A LOT LESS RAGE from Brian in this episode – so that’s a plus.

That did NOT go how we anticipated or hoped. 62-3.

Hell, the guys dislike that outcome so much that they barely discuss the Ohio State game at all.

Instead, Brian and Greg talk about depth at several positions, but mostly the quarterback position. And speaking of quarterbacks (past, present, and future), the guys delve into legacies of players and what it means to be great.

And Brian doesn’t HATE the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy, it’s just not the trophy he craves the most.

As a side note, Greg recently ordered a couple shirts for my son from Amazon. The name of the store is CornBorn. He bought two 12M shirts, but one was this design that you might enjoy:
