We also offer up our thoughts on Goldberg winning the WWE Universal Champion, John Cena’s return to WrestleMania and the future of ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 271: Wrestling with the 90s

The new year always means it’s time for the best pay-per-view event of the year, the Royal Rumble. We’re keeping the tradition alive of chatting about past Rumbles here on the podcast. This week, my guest co-host is Luke Lay, the co-host of the greatest Royal Rumble parties I’ve ever attended…

Royal Rumble Party

This year we break down the 1990 Rumble and the build to the match at WrestleMania VI between Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior.

Stride Pro Wrestling returns on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Central Junior High School in West Frankfort. This is a fundraiser for the school’s PTA. Check out Stride’s website for more details.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 268: 2 is Greater Than 1

In the world of professional wrestling, WWE is still considered the ultimate place to work.  This week, my co-host Tyler ‘Heath’ Hatton and I discuss his tryout with the company and some advice he has for all aspiring pro wrestlers.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 266: Wrestling with the 80s

Oh, the 80s. What a magical decade. The rise of pro wrestling started then and the world was introduced to WWF Superstars they could hold in their hand. The LJN collection is by far my favorite. So this week, my guest co-host Brian Juvers and I dig deep into the line and share our favorite memories of these figures.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 263: 2 is Greater Than 1

This month Kevin and Tyler continue to look back on All American Pro Wrestling and ahead to this Saturday’s Stride Pro Wrestling show. Many AAPW stars will be returning that night for Curly’s benefit. It’s at Black Diamond Harley Davidson in Marion and every cent raised that night goes to Curly, who is facing some serious health issues right now.

The 2nd annual Stride Pro Wrestling/My 1-2-3 Cents Pro Wrestling Action Figure Toy Drive is underway now. If you donate $5 or a new wrestling action figure you will be entered into a drawing for an autographed Four Horsemen poster. If you’re not in the area, you can PayPal me kevinhunsperger@gmail.com. You’ll receive one entry for every $5 donated. I will then use that money to buy figures from Five Below.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 261: Wrestling Under the Influence

As a fan who grew up watching pro wrestling in the 80s, one of my favorite pay-per-view events of all-time is the Survivor Series. The original concept has long been scrapped but for the first several years of the event, it was hard to beat.

In 1990 a twist was added. I’m not talking about the Ultimate Survivors match at the end of the night. I’m also not referring to the debut of the Undertaker. Instead, something else that night left a huge impression… the Gobbledy Gooker.

So that’s the subject of this month’s Wrestling Under the Influence. I review that awesomely bad moment in time and pair it with Leinenkugel’s Cranberry-Ginger Shandy.

The 2nd annual Stride Pro Wrestling/My 1-2-3 Cents Pro Wrestling Action Figure Toy Drive is underway now. Stride Pro Wrestling returns on Saturday, Dec. 7 with the former stars of All American Pro Wrestling for a benefit show for former wrestler Dan ‘Curly’ Summers. It’s at Black Diamond Harley Davidson in Marion and every cent raised that night goes to Curly, who is facing some serious health issues right now.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 259: 2 is Greater Than 1

The world of professional wrestling has a variety of memorable characters. One of the most memorable I’ve had the chance to work with is Curly. The man behind the gimmick, which is dedicated to the 3 Stooges is Dan Summers. Unfortunately, Dan is having some major medical issues right now.

That’s where his brothers and sisters in wrestling are stepping in. On Saturday, Dec. 7 Stride Pro Wrestling presents AAPW Ressurection. All American Pro Wrestling was at one time a huge force in southern Illinois and Curly was one of the biggest attractions on the roster.

Now, many stars from AAPW are coming together to wrestle for Stride. The show is happening at the Black Diamond Harley Davidson Warehouse and 100% of the money raised that night will be donated to Curly and his family. Get your tickets here.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 258: Wrestling Under the Influence

Cheers! It’s time for another Wrestling Under the Influence. This month Tom Skull from the Skullbuster Wrestlecast and Tom & Jim’s Top 5 joins me. We drink two different beers, Stone Scorpion Bowl IPA by Stone Brewing Company and Shenangians by Indeed Brewing.

Of course, we center the conversation around Sting and his 1990 nemesis the Black Scorpion. It’s a great conversation as we stroll down memory lane with some good beer.

My 1-2-3 Cents Ep. 257: Wrestling with the 80s

It’s been 30 years since the first Halloween Havoc. WCW came up with the concept and it ended up being a successful formula for the company. Did you know Halloween Havoc had a better rating than Starrcade 6 of the 12 years they were around? One year it was a tie and five times Starrcade rated higher.

This week though, we’re focused on that first year and the build-up to the Thunderdome match between Ric Flair and Sting vs. Terry Funk and the Great Muta.

Positive Cynicism EP. 112: The End is the Beginning

After two years and nine months, the weekly Positive Cynicism podcasts are coming to an end on the Jittery Monkey Podcast Network. After a year and a half of having rotating co-hosts, the decision to move the shows to the Positive Cynicism Podcast Network has been made in an attempt to better brand the shows.

Thanks to Greg Mehochko for the opportunity and encouragement to start Positive Cynicism. Thanks to Kevin Hunsperger for letting me guest on numerous episodes of My123Cents.  This is by no means a bitter split, it’s just the next evolution in the podcast landscape.

Greg and I are in talks for a new podcast for Jittery Monkey. Stay tuned for future announcements. For future installments of the Positive Cynicism shows, follow @chadsmart on twitter and stay tuned to www.positivecynicism.com

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 253: Wrestling with the 80s

When it comes to great wrestling families, I put the Von Erichs near the top of the list. I grew up in the 80s when Von Erich Mania was running wild. So did my guest co-host this week, Travis Yates (@thetravisyates on Twitter).

We stroll down memory lane and share our thoughts on this iconic family and throw in a few ‘what if’ style scenarios. It’s a great conversation and tribute to one of our all-time favorite families in wrestling.

Nerds United Episode 150: EPISODE 150, Y’ALL!

This week on the show, Greg and Mike wax nostalgia and talk about olden times, bring back a long-lost segment of the show, and talk about some of the various news and notes making the rounds this week.

And if you make it to the end, the guys run down some of the offerings on the Disney+ streaming app.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 251: What If…Vince Retired?

For nearly 40 years Vincent Kennedy McMahon has been the driving force behind the WWE. Before that, of course, it was the World Wrestling Federation. In recent years though, McMahon has been criticized for his decisions related to the product. So this week we explore ‘What If… Vince Retired?’

My co-host for this month’s installment is Stride Pro Wrestling General Manager Sam Hunter. He’s a lifelong fan of pro wrestling and we share our opinions on today’s product and what we think would happen if Vince McMahon walked away from the company today.

Stride Pro Wrestling is in action this Saturday night (Sept. 14) for a fundraiser called Cashing In. It’s a fundraiser for the YouthBuild program. Get more information here.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 250: 2 is Greater Than 1: New Champs

Never in my life did I think I’d have an opportunity to wrestle for a championship. That dream came true last week and my partner and I were successful in our effort.

Yes, Heath Hatton and I are the new Stride Pro Wrestling tag team champions. We beat Tony Flood and Jay Spade at Bash at the Ballpark. However, we defend our belts this Saturday, Sept. 7 at Revenge in Carterville. You can learn more here.

In this week’s episode of Two is Greater than One, Heath and I talk about the night we won the titles, why he decided to go in this direction and wrap things up with the new feature Three for the Road. So, who are your three favorite tag teams? Bonus if the Baby Oil Buddies (that’s us) is on your list. 🙂

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 249: Wrestling with the 80s

Oh, the 80s. What a decade! It’s when my fandom got started. It’s also when my guest co-host Jason Skull from the Skullbuster WrestleCast started watching wrestling. This week he joins me for the first installment of Wrestling with the 80s.

We discuss SummerSlam 1988, the first of its kind. Besides the show, we talk about the buildup to it and what was happening with Jim Crockett Promotions at the same time.

Positive Cynicism EP. 105: Too Much Information

The age of the internet has provided easy access to more information than is probably necessary. This is true when it comes to pop culture. @chadsmart and Eric Bennett discuss growing up prior to the internet when you’d find out about a movie by seeing a trailer in the theater a few months before the movie premiered. They compare it to now where a movie gets a release date before a script and fans know everything about the movie prior to the release.

Before getting to the main discussion, Eric gives a wrap up and live thoughts on his experience at San Diego Comic Con 2019.

Midway through the conversation, the conversation hits the tangent highway and road trip through thoughts on Disney’s live action remakes.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 247: What If… Jericho Stayed

This is the first installment of What If… and we’re talking about Chris Jericho. Chad Smart (from Positive Cynicism) and I discuss what if Jericho had stayed in WCW instead of jumping ship in Aug. 1999.

Stride Pro Wrestling heads to the Pulaski County Fair on Friday, Aug. 16. We also have a HUGE event planned on Thursday, Aug. 29 at Rent One Park in Marion. Learn more here.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 246: 2 is Greater Than 1

Welcome to the debut of 2 is Greater Than 1, a monthly segment on this podcast. I will be joined on the first Monday of each month by Heath Hatton. The title of the show comes from a line he used during a handicap match against Ryback at Extreme Rules 2012. The two of us are now tag team partners in Stride Pro Wrestling as well.

We have a lot to discuss this month, including the passing of legendary wrestler Harley Race, Stride Pro Wrestling and the upcoming shows for that company.

Stride Pro Wrestling heads to Benton on Saturday, Aug. 10 with IWA Productions. We also have a HUGE event planned on Thursday, Aug. 29 at Rent One Park in Marion. Learn more here.

Positive Cynicism EP. 103: Wonder Why; Len

It’s the last stop on the throwback to 1999 month of Positive Cynicism. Jumping in the time machine, @chadsmart and @MikeDeKalb head to great white north to check out a brother and sister who team up with a hip hop crew. The group known as Len burst onto the scene in the summer/fall of 1999 with the song “Steal My Sunshine.” Before the song was off the charts, Len seemed to vanish into thin air. Where did they go?

Chad and Mike break down the history of Len and try to understand why their career fizzled out so quickly. After the history lesson, Mike gives him impromptu thoughts on the hip hop bands he’d like to see on a package tour.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 245: Aleister Black (and #AskMy123Cents)

I never turn down the chance to do an interview (whether in person or on the phone) with someone involved in pro wrestling. Such is the case with my guest this week, WWE Superstar Aleister Black. He was doing promos for the SummerSlam Heatwave Tour which made a stop in Cape Girardeau, MO. While I had Black on the phone we chatted about his character, his career and life on the road. This week’s episode is also an Ask My 1-2-3 Cents, so thanks for participating.

Positive Cynicism EP. 96: Bingeing and Purging Television

In the age of easily watching episode after episode of a TV show, binge watching has become an almost preferable method of viewing. On this episode of Positive Cynicism, @chadsmart and Eric Bennett discuss their habits with binge watching as well as the effects watching so much TV at once has on their viewing.

Positive Cynicism EP. 95: Sports and Role Models

Why do we as a society value athletes and celebrities as role models? Is this idolization warranted or unjust expectation? On this episode of Positive Cynicism, @chadsmart and @TheTravisYates examine how athletes with discipline or criminal records get rewarded with new contracts. How fans still cheer for athletes despite their off field antics and try to determine if fandom trumps individual actions.

Before getting into the main discussion, the hosts discuss the recent death of baseball player Bill Buckner and if it’s disrespectful to bring up his World Series error as a notable aspect of his career.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 237: Changing Identities

Dean Ambrose is once again Jon Moxley. Goldust is Dustin Rhodes again. This week my co-host Garrett Turner, aka Dexter Roswel, and l talk about our favorite identity changes in pro wrestling. Roswell himself has had some changes in character; actually using two different personalities for Dexter in Stride Pro Wrestling and Cape Championship Wrestling.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 235: 20 Minutes of Ranting

Don’t be too worried about the title. I am ranting, but it’s not a full 20 minutes. Basically, I’m fed up with the ‘fake news’ out there concerning wrestling. I share my views on that and more in this week’s episode.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 230: Brett ‘the Hipman’ Hop

Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart is one of the most iconic pro wrestlers in the history of the business. He was recently immortalized again in the WWE Hall of Fame with his partner Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart.

This week on the podcast, my co-host Roger Matheus and I review a beer made in Hart’s honor. It’s called Brett ‘The Hipman’ Hop. Against the Grain Brewery & Smokehouse in Louisville, Kentucky makes this beer. They sent me a bottle to try just for the show.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 226: Kurt Angle’s WrestleMania

Since everyone is speculating on who Kurt Angle’s last opponent should be, I figured I’d jump on board too. This week, Dalton Anthony from Pro Wrestling Unscripted joins me as co-host to discuss our favorite choices. We stuck to current WWE/NXT Superstars. I believe we have solid lists. Check it out and let me know who you would have face Angle in his final match.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 225: Greatest Wrestling Returns

It’s a new episode of My 1-2-3 Cents the podcast. This week the new Stride Pro Wrestling Champion Red Daniels joins me as co-host. Since he just returned to the ring after being buried alive in Dec. 2017, I thought it only made sense to share our favorite wrestling returns.

We each share our six favorites (spoiler: mine are mostly old school based). Red also discusses his thoughts on character development and what he’s learned in his three years in the business.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 219: Royal Rumble Roulette

The 2019 Royal Rumble is over as you’re listening to this week’s episode. But I still wanted to take the time to do a Royal Rumble themed show. So welcome to the first ever Royal Rumble Roulette

Guest co-host Luke Lay and I discuss the 1994 Royal Rumble. How we get to the talking points is the fun part, as we draw numbers just like in the real Rumble match.

Nerds United Episode 119: IMDb and the Silver Foxes

This episode is all over the place. But before we get to that, you need to know that this weekend, you can save 20% on your t-shirts at the Jittery Monkey Shop. Get those Nerds United shirts, take a picture, and share them with us.

This week, Mike and Greg talk about Brightburn, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Elizabeth Banks, IMDb, and Mike’s incredibly old sister.

If you need more info than that, you should probably just listen to the show. In fact, you should just listen to the show, period.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 108: The Band is Back Together

Hooch, Hoss, and Jon Damn Johnston are back for the first time in a month and Jon LOVES Nebrasketball. And he doesn’t understand why Husker fans are self-loathing, to the point of self-destructive. It’s not helpful.

This episode, we get live in-game updates and reactions as Jon and Hoss are watching Nebraska vs #6 Michigan State. From outbursts of laughter to yelling at the television, follow along with the boys on the podcast.

The guys also talk about the College Football Playoff championship between Clemson and Alabama. And the notion of paying $165 for a ticket to the AFC Championship intrigues Hoss.

And Jon asks the question on everyone’s mind…does defense still win championships?

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 217: The Gorilla Position

I’ve made a lot of friends over the years thanks to professional wrestling. One of them is Ryan Boman. But he’s not your average wrestling fan. Ryan has created a website called The Gorilla Position and is telling the stories of pro wrestling’s storytellers.

From there Ryan and his team developed Pinned.Biz which works to help market the men and women in the world of pro wrestling. I love the concept of both of his websites and we talk all about the idea behind them both in this week’s podcast.

Ryan also shares some thoughts on the landscape of today’s pro wrestling scene; including the creation of All Elite Wrestling. Plus, he was in Nashville recently covering Impact Wrestling’s Homecoming event. Give it a listen and check him out on social media too (@RyanKBoman & @GWPWeb on Twitter).

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 215: The 2018 Centies

The Centy Goes To…

It’s the end of another year and Chad and Kevin are back with the annual Centy Awards. The categories were trimmed down a bit compared to previous years, but the discussion is a meaningful one. Let us know how you will look back on the world of pro wrestling in 2018.

On a separate note, I’d like to thank all of you who have taken time to listen to the My 1-2-3 Cents podcast, read the blog or watch videos on YouTube and Facebook. It means the world to me. I want to wish you all a happy and healthy 2019 and look for more announcements soon!

Nerds United Episode 117: Podception – Jamie Farr in a Hat

So – new editor here on WordPress. I’m nothing if not stuck in my ways, so obviously I hate it. Much like every new layout of Facebook that gets rolled out, it will just take some getting used to. Hopefully it doesn’t take long to figure it out.

In this episode, I do a run-in on the ABCD-Bags Podcast.

via GIPHY

This conversation starts with comic books like Y: The Last Man and its upcoming TV adaptation as well as various titles from Valiant Comics. Then we talk about the Mandela Effect, Curious George, and Berenstain Bears.

We talk about popcorn and peanut butter, Nebraska athletics, beer, and Jamie Farr. It’s a gem of a podcast, with special shout outs to Mike’s mom (because she won’t listen). Don’t forget to do some shopping at jitterymonkey.com/shop because this podcast doesn’t pay for itself…and it’d be really nice if it did.

POSITIVE CYNICISM EP. 72: WRESTLING WITH NOSTALGIA

It’s a Christmas miracle. Continuing the @JitteryMonkey holiday crossover event, @kevinhunsperger joins @chadsmart to continue the Positive Cynicism month of nostalgia to discuss how and why they’re fans of professional wrestling. Starting with their earliest memories of wrestling and going through their thoughts on the current state of wrestling, Kevin and Chad touch on favorite moments from the last thirty years as well as things they would like to see change. Along the way the discussion delves into a meeting of the Becky Lynch mutual appreciation society.

Be sure to check out the rest of the shows on the Jittery Monkey podcasting network.

4 Elf Winter Warmer Spiced Ale.

Tis the season for drinking, so Chad Smart (host of Positive Cynicism) and I busted open 4 Elf Winter Warmer Spiced Ale by Dark Horse Brewery. While enjoying this festive beer we chat about Christmas gimmicks, movies and angles related to the world of pro wrestling.

One story we share is the Ultimate Warrior Christmas comic. You can check it out here and decide for yourself if Warrior “humbled” Santa Claus…

Nerds United Episode 116: Very Special Christmas Special 2018

Well, we’re finally here. The weekend before Christmas. And if you’re like me, you are nowhere near ready for the holiday. From decorating to wrapping, yeah – it’s another year of being behind the Eight Ball.

In this episode, Mike and I are joined by our very special guest, Mike’s son Nolan. Nolan brings a youthful perspective that we have long outgrown. But this kid is sharp and quick-witted and not afraid to lay in a few zingers from time to time. And what he did after we finished recording – well, I can’t even explain it.

So enjoy the show. Enjoy your holiday season. and Merry Christmas!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 106: Early Signing Day Recap

After giving Jon a couple weeks off so he could take photos at the regional and national volleyball tournaments, Fearless Leader is back with Hoss and Hooch, and he brought along Corn Nation’s recruiting correspondent, Rick Cone. We recorded the evening of College Football’s Early Signing Day, and the Husker fax machine was busy!

Who’s N? Who’s still on the fence? Who were the big “gets” of the day, as Scott Frost and Co. concluded their first full year of recruiting?

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Husker Women’s Volleyball team and their outstanding showing in what was supposed to be a “rebuilding year.” Looking forward to even more good things from them in the years to come.

POSITIVE CYNICISM EPISODE 71: QUESTION EVERYTHING – ROB KUGLER

Hey there. Greg Mehochko here. I’m taking over Positive Cynicism for one episode. RELAX! Chad Smart and Mike “The Hockey Transplant” DeKalb will be back next time for their WONDER WHY series.

This is a return of Question Everything. Meet Rob Kugler. He’s been a longtime friend of mine. He has done a lot in his life, from serving in the military to trying his hand at acting to taking his beautiful three-legged chocolate lab on a once-in-a-lifetime, coast-to-coast trip over her final months. A happy dog, afflicted by cancer, who had a leg removed.

We talk about Rob and his military background, love and loss, his trip with Bella, and writing the book that tries to capture everything.

I pre-ordered my copy of the book back in November. I followed Rob and Bella’s trip all along, and I encourage you to check out Rob’s Instagram for some really uplifting pictures, stories, and smiles. Listen to the podcast and if you want more of this tremendous story, I highly encourage you to buy the book!

Thanks for listening. This is at times an emotional story. But it’s also inspirational.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 213: SuperClash III

Buck & a Quarter Podcast

SuperClash III went down 30 years ago. This week a special guest joins me for some analysis on the AWA’s only pay per view event. Bob Schulte (@BobWicked38 on Twitter) is a lifelong wrestling fan and grew up in Minnesota. He shares some insight on the AWA as we breakdown SuperClash III.

Nerds United Episode 115: Friday Night Thoughts on Aquaman and Marvel

Hey there! Happy Friday night/Saturday morning. Greg and Mike got together and spent a little time on Facebook as well as some audio-only content. We cover Aquaman and the DC Cinematic Universe, as well as the DC CW crossover event this past week titled Elseworlds.

Also, since we last got together, Marvel released trailers for Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame.

Plus we have a special treat from Greg’s early terrestrial radio days, and lots of love for Tom and Jim’s Top 5.

Don’t forget to get your shirts and merch from the shop! Your support is greatly appreciated, and if you did order a shirt, share your merch on social media so we can give you props!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 105: Husker Volleyball Seeking Back-to-Back Titles

Well, we’re not talking Nebrasketball today. But Corn Nation’s Volleyball Guru Ty Peteranetz and I have lots of volleyball talk to get you geared up for tonight’s National Semifinal Volleyball match.

After sweeping their way to the National Final Four, defeating Kentucky and Oregon on the way, the Huskers return to Minneapolis for the second consecutive week, and take on another Big Ten team in the semifinal, facing off against Illinois for the third time of the year.

Ty will be in Minneapolis for as long as the Huskers are there. We wish him safe travels and a long weekend.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 104: Husker Football Moving Forward

In what will probably the first of two episodes this week on the Five Heart Podcast, Hoss and Hooch talk about some of the players departing from the Husker football program and who we (okay, really, it’s Hoss) think will step up in the future to take those spots.

The list goes like this:

  • Interior Offensive Linemen
  • Bryce Benhart at Right Tackle
  • Replacing Devine Ozigbo
  • Replacing Stanley Morgan Jr
  • Defensive Front Seven
  • Inside Linebackers
  • Pass Rush
  • Dynamic defensive Schemes/Calls.

We also talk about the progression of Adrian Martinez, and perhaps what we can expect from him in the future.

Also discussed, a tease about conversations later this week regarding Nebraska basketball and volleyball.

Christmas Break

Stride Pro Wrestling celebrated the holiday season with the show Christmas Break over the weekend. It was an action-packed event that had many twists and turns as we close out 2018. I’m already looking forward to our next show, Jan. 5, 2019.

This week on the podcast I recap the event, look ahead to the future and answer more of your questions. It’s a fun episode and it’s less than 30 minutes so you’ve got time to listen.

The My 1-2-3 Cents Pro Wrestling Tees store is up and running. Get a shirt in time for Christmas.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 103: Previewing Husker VB vs Kentucky

On this week’s episode, made available with hours to spare ahead of the regional semifinal match, Greg is joined by Ty Peteranetz to discuss the 2018 Husker VB squad.

How did this Husker volleyball team come together? They certainly weathered the storm of a tough stretch of action in the country’s best volleyball conference. It’s a fact. Of the eight games in the regional semifinals taking place today, six of them include Big Ten teams. Suck it, SEC.

With graduation looming for all-American Mikaela Foecke and others, who does Ty foresee stepping into the top-dog role next year, and who’s already making a name for themselves on this young Nebraska squad?

What did the Huskers do right down the stretch and what do they have to do to win the Minnesota Regional that includes a Gopher squad that has beaten our beloved Big Red twice?

And how is Ty doing as the dad of a newly crowned one-year-old, and how are we handling those odd child smells?

It’s all in this episode of the Five Heart Podcast.

Positive Cynicism EP. 69: Feeling Nostalgic

‘Tis the holiday season and with it comes the feelings of nostalgia. On this episode of Positive Cynicism, @chadsmart and Travis Yates (@PopCultIQ) discuss why nostalgia conjures strong feelings.  From the simple pleasures of our youth to the yearning for how things used to be, what is the driving force for nostalgia? Not only in our personal lives but in the pop culture realm of entertainment. Everything old is new again. From movie and television remakes to “toys” being geared more for collectors than kids, there is a growing sense that nostalgia and name brand recognition matter most.

What affect will this have on the current generation of kids when they hit middle age? What will they be nostalgic about to their kids? Chad and Travis try to answer this question.

Hello and welcome to a brand new Nerds United. We sure are happy you’re here.

In this week’s episode, Mike and Greg talk about their Thanksgiving weekends and their awesome families. Another of your favorite Marvel shows is leaving Netflix, which we all anticipated. Fuller House is still on the streaming service. But that Disney App is starting to look pretty inviting. However, we’re still pretty sure there’s one 1946 movie that will remain buried in the vault.

Hear Nickelback cover a Metallica song, and hear the guys talk about the Joker movie, and how Mike says the DC Cinematic Standalone Universe is still unproven.

“You’re a wizard, Harry.” Famous words from a famous giant (or giant-like man). But what are some ridiculous things that Hagrid could have told Harry Potter that would have been just as believable (if not just as odd) as telling a ten-year-old boy that he’s a wizard?

Thanks to everyone who has picked up a shirt. Want to be one of the cool kids? Get your shirt here.

Positive Cynicism Ep. 68: Wonder Why; Sly Fox

This month on Wonder Why, Chad “Limited Effort” Smart and Mike “Rabbit Hole” DeKalb attempt to talk about Sly Fox’s 1986 hit “Let’s Go All The Way” and figure out why the duo of “Mudbone” Cooper and Michael “Not Hector” Camacho didn’t find success with any follow up singles.

Breaking down the history of Sly Fox does get a bit funky at times. Find out the interesting use of the back beat of “Let’s Go All the Way” as well as what a couple of clowns had to do with exposing one of Mtv’s worst kept secrets.

Once they’ve exhausted the history of Sly Fox, @chadsmart and @MikeDeKalb give your their holiday picks for the month.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 210: #AskMy123Cents

You Ask, I Answer

It’s another installment of #AskMy123Cents. But before the Q&A, I pay tribute to Larry Matysik. The legendary voice of Wrestling at the Chase died over the weekend after a long illness.

Other notes this week, Stride Pro Wrestling’s Christmas Break show is Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Stride Arena (1130 N. Division Street in Carterville, Illinois). Bell time is 6:30 p.m., doors open at 6. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Be there, it’s gonna be a great night of family-friendly pro wrestling action.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 101: Iowa Hate Week

This Friday. 11:00am. The turkey is digested. The pie plates are empty.

It’s time to go to war.

IOWA HATE WEEK!

But first: Nebraska used the leg of Barrett Pickering to defeat the visiting Michigan State Spartans 9-6 on a cold and snowy day in Lincoln. Going up against a stiff defense from East Lansing, Nebraska did just enough to get the win on Senior Day.

And then…we talk Iowa. Nothing good about Iowa. Iowa as a state is like Kansas except worse. So Hoss, Hooch, and Jon talk about the rivalry with the Hawkeyes. how long have the hard feelings existed between the two fanbases?

And our Black Friday predictions.

If you enjoy what we do here on the show, consider picking up a shirt from our shirt store. New designs will be coming in all the time, so check it out.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 100!!! Bah Gawd! That’s a winner!

So there I am, watching my niece’s kindergarten basketball game last Saturday morning. You know the type. They have fifteen-minute halves where the clock doesn’t stop. They don’t keep score. And it’s all about going out and having fun. No real rules. I was having a mild anxiety attack as kids were running the ball up the court. But hey, it gives them something to do after farming season (my sister married a farmer and they live in a small farming town…nice town).

So there I am, watching my niece’s game and I’m repping the Big Red. I have my Huskers hoodie on that Brett Baker delivered to me in person three years ago when he and his daughter Jessica went to the Nebraska-Illinois game in Champaign. You remember the one. The one we lost. [Expletive Deleted]. My dad says, not prompted at all, something along the lines of “I’m taking Illinois today.”

I laughed. Not mockingly. Not boisterously. Just laughed. Then after the game, my son and I went to “grandma and grandpa’s” house as my mom made pancakes and bacon for everyone. I watched a little of the game before and after breakfast, then helped my dad do some winterizing stuff outside.

Now I tell you all of that to tell you this. I DVRed the game and started watching it Saturday night. I finished watching it Wednesday evening before we started recording.

In this milestone 100th episode, we talk about the big win over Illinois and why Adrian Martinez and Devine Ozigbo are deserving of their conference accolades this week. We talk about science, but I can’t remember how we got on that topic.

Image result for science gif

And Patrick Gerhart joins us to talk about Nebrasketball’s hot start, including the win this week over Seton Hall!

Jon also has a story or two from his undergrad days and my son looks like he’s going to pee on his bed. So it was a wild and crazy night!

POSITIVE CYNICISM EP. 66: JUDGING THE POP CULTURE PAST

Continuing the discussion from EP. 65: Judging the Past, @chadsmart is joined by once again by Eric Bennett to discuss using standards and morals of 2018 when viewing movies from the past. Is it fair to label teen comedies from the ’80s as sex crimes on film?  Is it acceptable to write off derogatory speech as just a product of the time? These topics and others examined as Chad and Eric cover their history as pop culture connoisseurs to see if they’ve view items from their youth differently today.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 208: That Didn’t Age Well

Piper vs. Adonis

I’m kicking off a new feature on My 1-2-3 Cents the podcast. That Didn’t Age Well will focus on a storyline or character from pro wrestling’s past and explore why it wouldn’t work today. First up is the feud between “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and “Adorable” Adrian Adonis.

Please don’t interpret this as a way to bash the past. Chad Smart from Positive Cynicism joins me for the show. We are simply looking at the storyline from 1986 and how fans reacted to it back then. We’re both fans of Hot Rod so there’s nothing negative in what we say.

It’s almost Christmas. Check out the latest design in the My 1-2-3 Cents store on Pro Wrestling Tees. Celebrate a Centmas Vacation!

Nerds United Episode 112: HE’S A SKRULL!!!

It is time for a brand new episode, back home in the kitchen of the Nerds United Lair!

But fear not, we’re bringing the spirit of 4204 Main Street Brewing Company (or should we say spirits…we’re drinking) with us.

In this episode, we’re talking about Wolverine: The Long Night, which completed its ten-episode run of season one this past weekend on Apple Podcasts. We also talk about Secret Invasion, Heroes in Crisis, Brad Meltzer’s Justice League run, Superman Red Son, and a lot more.

At the end of the episode, we also give away a copy of The Comic Book Story of BEER!

If you like beer and you like comic books, you will love this book! It’s chock full of great information!

Enjoy the podcast on your favorite podcast app or check out the live stream on the Facebook page!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 99: So Close Against OSU

We already played the “moral victory” card. This was a loss. But hot damn, it was the best loss we’ve seen this team take in some time. It was fun to watch as a game. It was more fun to watch Urban Meyer squirm as the outcome was still in doubt late in the contest. It was really fun listening to 100,000 fans booing the home team as they headed to the locker room at halftime.

Listen, friends. We’re close. Closer than any of us thought. And as ridiculous as it may have seemed a few weeks ago, we still have the possibility of making a bowl game.

Up next: Illinois. And there’s no way the Fighting “We Don’t Know What to Call Ourselves” will win this weekend!

Nerds United Episode 111: Hanging Out at the 4204 Brewery

You read that right, true believers! In this very special “Field Trip Edition” of the podcast, Greg and Mike are hanging out and recording from the 4204 Main Street Brewing Company Taphouse/Production Brewery. In other words, if you’re in Illinois, Missouri, or Kansas and you see a six-pack of a delicious 4204 brew, it was brewed right behind where we were sitting.

We were very fortunate that the good people at the brewery, from the owners to the Head Brewer Keith to Deja the Taphouse Manager and provider of fine ales and lagers, opened their doors to us. Because we like beer. And they have beer. It’s a perfect symbiotic relationship.

So the first thirty or so minutes of the podcast, we were actually streaming and recording live on Facebook. Three people. Two microphones. We’re podcasters, not math geniuses. Anyway, that first half hour was spent with Keith learning all about the beer making process and also trying different beers. You’ll notice in the featured photo that Greg finished his beers. He ended up bringing two growlers home, including the Tickle for his wife.

After we let Keith get back to work, Mike and Greg talk about some comic book topics, including Return of Wolverine, Heroes in Crisis, and Cry Havoc.

There’s a giveaway we’re working on. It is for The Comic Book Story of Beer. Fitting, right? Let’s do this. If you read this, share the post on Facebook. I’ll enter all who do into a random drawing and the winner will get the graphic novel delivered to their front door!

That’s pretty much it. Enjoy the show, and thank you again to Keith, Deja, and everyone who helped make our trip to 4204 Brewery possible!

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 207: Taya Valkyrie

Lucha Royalty

This week I’m pulling some audio from the Impact Wrestling media call. I’ve sat in on these calls a few times but have yet to figure out how to get in a question. However, I am using some of the audio from the most recent call with Taya Valkyrie. She has been going toe to toe with Knockouts Champion Tessa Blanchard in recent weeks.

Also on the show this week, a preview of Stride Pro Wrestling’s upcoming show. The company has a new home at 1130 N. Division Street in Carterville, Illinois. On Saturday, Nov. 10 you can see the action as Heath Hatton defends the Stride Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Title against Chris Hargas. Bell time is 6:30 p.m. Click here for more details.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 98: 2-0 with Ohio State Up Next

Hey folks, we’re one win shy of a winning streak! And since we’re not superstitious, but just a little stitious…

Image result for major league winning streak gif

Granted, it was a win against Bethune-Cookman. But the team really looked solid in that first half. And that second half sure did happen, too!

In this episode, Hoss is out. Jon Damn Johnston is in his chair and TALKS ABOUT THE OFFENSIVE LINE! (Hoss will be back next week.) We’re joined by #PaultheStatExpert who gives one of the best “GO BIG RED’s” to date.

And Jon calls Paul names because he’s mean. Lord only know what the winos get for their efforts.

It’s almost Halloween, and we’re celebrating it here at My 1-2-3 Cents with one-third of the Midwest Monster Hunters, Bo Sawyer. He has been a part of Stride Pro Wrestling for nearly a year but has more than a decade of experience under his belt on the indy wrestling scene.

Nerds United Episode 110: Drinking, Halloween, and Comics

In this BRAND NEW EPISODE of Nerds United, Greg and Co-Host of the YEEEAAARRR Mike regale each other with tales of alcohol foolishness from days gone by. We also talk about our favorite Halloween candy, haunted houses and a slew of nerdy topics. Let’s run down the list.

  • Marvel Civil War vs MCU’s Civil War
  • Mark Millar’s Huck
  • Marvel and Netflix
  • The Immortal Iron Fist
  • Luke Cage
  • Heroes for Hire…?
  • The Flash (aka the Scarlet Speedster aka the Fastest Man Alive)
  • Rejection from Pro Wrestling Tees (insert sad face here)

And while you support us for FREE, we encourage you to support others carving their own path in independent content creation. With that in mind, PLEASE consider supporting West of Oz on Kickstarter. Five Heart Podcast Episode 97: WE WON! Now on to Bethune-Cookman

WE (by that we mean the Huskers) WON A DAMN GAME! And racked up over 600 yards of offense, the defense looked serviceable, and Eric Lee saved the day!

We are out of practice recording a victorious podcast. But let me break it down for you as best I can:

  • Jon is grumpy from dealing with the winos. After the win, he upgraded them to Boone’s Farm
  • Hoss is a perfectly responsible non-traditional student in the teaching field, as we kept the episode short so he could return to his lesson plan
  • Hooch got pissed off that they went for two

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 205: Arron Brooks

New Legacy Champ

Arron Brooks is the new Stride Pro Wrestling Legacy Champion. You may remember our conversation from back in June. At that time he’d been named the number one contender to the title. Since then he captured the championship in a fantastic four-way ladder match. For that match, Brooks had himself painted (courtesy artist Mackenzie Blades) as Venom.

After the match, the online haters started rearing their ugly heads. Arron and I talk about that in this week’s podcast along with this future as the Legacy Champion.

Nerds United Episode 109: West of Oz Strikes Back

Two episodes in one calendar week. You know what that means…time is of the essence!

You have just a couple more weeks to once again lend support to West of Oz! Sean Benner and Nick Winand have been on the show before and we have used the Nerds United Bump to aid in getting two Kickstarter campaigns successfully funded.

The Kickstarter is for the Volume 2, issues 4-5-6, of the 9-part series of this original interpretation of Frank L Baum’s Wizard of Oz story. In this episode, Greg talks with Sean and Nick about this section of the overall narrative, creating on a schedule, travelling to various cities for comic cons (it’s coming, Scottsbluff, Nebraska), and more.

Hey, it’s me. Greg. I’m a big believer in this project. I’ve been on board since Day One, Campaign One. I have supported this venture both in promotion and financially. I’m one of those that wants to see this story’s end. So help me get this project funded. Your $10, $20, or $30 can go a long way.

I thank you. Sean, Nick, Amanda, and Danielle thank you. Now enjoy some artwork they shared with me during our chat.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 96: Losing to Northwestern and the Chair Trophy

Due to schedule conflicts and life, Hoss and Hooch had to combine two episodes into one this week, meaning they aren’t sitting down with the enemy for a preview chat. But Jon Damn Johnston is here to save the day!

View this post on Instagram

Chair chair chair chair!

A post shared by Jon Johnston (@cornnation) on

Jon (pictured here with the trophy the Huskers will be bringing back to Lincoln) was able to talk with some of the people who were able to make the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy possible from the Minnesota side. We’ll have that audio for you at the end, so stay tuned.

Meanwhile, the rest of the show is a lot of not pointing fingers at referees, continuing to preach patience, and JDJ reminding us that this week, “it’s personal!”

So strap in for another great show. And GO BIG RED!

It’s a truck show as Greg and Mike are on the road to see Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman in St Louis, MO. We talk about our excitement for the show as well as Batwoman, Venom, and traffic.

I’d type more, but it’s 2-damn-24.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 204: ‘T-Dog’ Jerry Travelstead

Mr. T Rules

The number 204 means a lot to this week’s guest, ‘T-Dog’ Jerry Travelstead. He’s the superintendent and principal at Community Consolidated School District 204 in Pinckneyville, Illinois. He is also the man behind many of Stride Pro Wrestling’s fundraiser shows.

Jerry won the ‘All Out of Bubblegum’ Award during the 2017 Centy Awards. It’s because of his giving spirit and wanting to help as many people as he can. We talk about the fundraising side of indy wrestling and what he looks forward to accomplishing inside and outside the ring. You can reach out to Jerry through this site.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 95: Nebraska-Northwestern Preview with InsideNU

It’s almost Gameday! And that means it’s time to preview Saturday’s game. This week at 11am, Nebraska takes on Northwestern at Ryan Field in Evanston, IL. Hoss will be there. Hooch will also be in Illinois, but that’s because he lives there.

In this episode, we’re joined by InsideNU’s Noah Coffman to offer insight into the Wildcats’ 2-3 season. Clayton Thorsen is back and healthy and has Northwestern playing well coming off their 29-19 win over #20 Michigan State in East Lansing. How do these teams match up and who has the edge?

Noah also helps Hoss on some local eateries.

And Jon Damn Johnston returns to give us an update on the winos and the demon dog in his neighborhood. Plus…is Jon a witch?

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 203: Locker Room Melee

Stride Pro Wrestling returns

Stride Pro Wrestling’s most recent show, Locker Room Melee, certainly lived up to its name. In this week’s episode, I do a quick recap of the show, including the injury Tony Flood suffered during the main event. I have a whole new respect for Flood after that encounter.

Abyss was part of the show as well. I had a great chat with him early in the evening. You can read more about his match with Roger Matheus here. Plus all your other favorites from Stride Pro Wrestling were a part of the event.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 94: Good Vibes After a Loss?

I’ll be the first to say that in college football, there’s no such thing as a moral victory.

Until there is.

What we witnessed Saturday night from Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin was nothing short of a moral victory. The offense busted its ass all game, and while there were hiccups, penalties, and errors, Big Red put up 518 yards of offense against the number-16 Badgers. And one Husker put his name in two record books.

Sophomore JD Spielman topped his own record for receiving yards in a single game, finishing with 209 yards on nine catches. The yardage was also the most that Wisconsin had ever allowed an opposing receiver to achieve on their home field.

So what does this mean for the Huskers? The defense still needs to do a better job of getting off the field and the team as a whole needs to start making better decisions that take away some of the penalties (10 for 100 yards…IN YOUR FACE, AKRON)!

So here we are, 0-5, and I have never felt better about this team as I do right now. Three losses in one week. But the team is stronger for it.

Beer, Brewers Baseball. Bucky freakin’ Badger.

Those are just a few of the topics Hoss and Hooch cover with Jake Kocorowski from Bucky’s 5th Quarter. Jake is a busy podcast co-host as well as an editor at B5Q. We talk about Wisconsin’s 3-1 start to the season, including the close loss to BYU. Who are some players to watch out for besides Jonathon Taylor? Where are the Badgers’ weaknesses? Do the Badgers have any weaknesses?

And as always, Jon Damn Johnston comes in to give us the latest on the winos by his house and to give his thoughts on the loss to Purdue. And BAH GAWD! The predictions this week!

Nerds United Episode 107: Top Five TV/Sitcom Couples

For this episode, I took my recording equipment down to southeast Missouri to see my friends Jared and Nia Smith. We watched some TV, talked about food, and then recorded an epic episode of Nerds United!

Hey, Tom and Jim’s Top 5, we’re blatantly (with your permission) borrowing your gimmick in a way that I don’t believe you have utilized in the past. We’re talking about our top five TV/sitcom couples. And in typical fashion, right out of the gates, curveballs. Man, I didn’t see some of Jared and Nia’s responses coming. Also, I was admonished greatly for watching the right shows. So…there’s that.

What can I say – I like what I like and a rarely venture out of my comfort zone. But now I have homework.

Well, I should give THEM homework. Did you know that the good Smith duo hasn’t seen most of the Marvel movies? And they want to bust my chops for not watching 30 Rock? Whaaaaaat?

So anyway, enjoy the show. It’s a good one. But of course, they all are.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 202: Abyss

Hall of Fame Inductee

Very soon (Oct. 13) Abyss is going into the Impact Wrestling Hall of Fame. Before that happens, he’s part of a big fundraiser show for Stride Pro Wrestling on Saturday, Oct. 6. The Monster faces Roger Matheus. These two have clashed before but never in a Stride ring.

That show is at Community Consolidated School Dist. 204 in Pinckneyville, Illinois. We’re raising money to build a new locker room for the school. Very penny raised that night supports the cause.

I had a chance to sit in on a conference call with Abyss and other pro wrestling journalists. I recorded a portion of the call and am sharing it with you all. Remember, he’ll be here in southern Illinois on Oct. 6. Get ticket info here.

If you’re into t-shirts, check out the My 1-2-3 Cents store on Pro Wrestling Tees. You can shop here for your Mondo the Monkey shirt. More designs are coming soon. If you have ideas for shirts, let me know. Until I sell 25, I’m limited to four designs though.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 92: Reviewing the Loss to Purdue

0-4 for the season. Eight losses in a row. We didn’t get the good luck bump from Hammer and Rails’ Travis Miller like we had hoped. And the end result was a 42-28 Husker loss to the Boilermakers.

A lot went wrong for Nebraska Saturday. But much of it was the same that we have seen this season. Penalties. Turnovers. Inability to get off the field on third down. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

But there were some bright spots. There were positives to take away after Saturday’s loss. So we talk about some of those as well. It’s not all complete doom and gloom. And we still say “give it time, it’s going to get better.”

Nerds United Episode 106: Captain Marvel, Dark Phoenix, and Much More

It’s time for a brand new episode of your favorite comic book/movie/pop culture podcast that you can find on the Jittery Monkey Podcast Network. Mike and Greg talk about the Captain Marvel trailer, the Dark Phoenix trailer, Deadpool 2, what we’ve seen from the new Joker movie, and take a trip back in time to movies they appreciated as children. For Mike, it was the Savage brothers and Howie Mandel in Little Monsters. For Greg, it was being introduced to the F-Bomb in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Critters (seen here).

We also talk about beer, have our weekly review of Tom and Jim’s Top 5 (you’re welcome), talk about podcasts at the grassroots level and how they (okay, we) need your support. Not financial (not yet). But just help us get the word out about our podcasts here at Jittery Monkey. Share them with your friends. Subscribe if you haven’t already. Rate and review on your favorite podcast app. It helps. And we appreciate you.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 91: Talking with Purdue

Well, the last time I was joined on the show by Hammer & RailsTravis Miller was last year before the Nebraska-Purdue game. That was the last game Nebraska won.

So obviously Travis will be our little good luck charm. Obviously.

As usual, we talk about some of the key players for the Boilermakers and how the “best 0-3 team in the land” beat a top-25 team last week. We get Travis’ thoughts, an outsider’s view looking in at the situation in Lincoln and the sluggish start  for the Huskers.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 201: Hulk Hogan vs. Braun Strowman

Ask My 1-2-3 Cents

This week’s episode is a #AskMy123Cents. I took to social media (late of course) and got a few questions, including who on the current WWE roster I would book against Hulk Hogan in his prime. By the title of this show, you’ve figured out it’s Braun Strowman.

I enjoy the interaction with other fans to make this show possible. Thanks to everyone who interacts on the various forms of social media. You can always reach out here or on any of the usual platforms.

Also, I’ve got a store on Pro Wrestling Tees. The monkey shirt is the only one currently available, but new designs are coming soon. Thanks to those who have already bought a shirt. Click here to shop.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 90: WOOF! The Michigan Review

Expectations have not met reality. That’s the harsh truth and the pill all Husker fans have had to swallow. So when the chips are down, we can either bury our head in the sand or we can face our problems head on.

I was trying to see how many cliches I could fit into those two lines. I feel like I could have done better.

And our beloved Huskers CAN do better. I firmly believe that. In this episode, Hoss and I are both a little down on the overall play of the Nebraska football team, but after we stopped recording, we both acknowledged that there is enough talent on this roster to compete and win.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 89: Time to Preview the Michigan Wolverines

It’s time for our weekly preview – our chat with the enemy. And this week, the enemy is one of the most storied programs in college football…the Michigan Wolverines.

We’re happy to be joined by Josh LaFond from Maize N Brew, who was happy to dispense his knowledge about this year’s squad from Ann Arbor. He also rains shit down on Greg who states quite definitively that his (Greg’s – “pronouns, pal”) favorite movie is Rudy. Josh has a lot of insight into the host Wolverines and names that Husker fans will probably hear on Gameday.

Here’s that tweet I was telling you about:

https://twitter.com/BarstoolHusker/status/1042545383166107648

Then Jon Damn Johnston is back to share more stories (unfortunately the best one didn’t make the recording, so hopefully Jon wrote about it for Corn Nation), talk a little football, and say that he doesn’t hate Michigan. But he does prefer Three’s Company over Murder, She Wrote.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 200: The Clip Show

Thanks for Listening

Wow. Time certainly flies by. I can’t believe episode 200 is already here. After some failed attempts at getting guests like Road Warrior Animal, Kevin Sullivan, Matt Riddle and Brutus “The F’ing Barber” Beefcake, I decided to do a clip show.

This week I’m sharing a few clips from the dozens of interviews I’ve done over the past four years. So today, you’ll hear from Lisa Marie Varon (Victoria), Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, Cash Borden, Heath Hatton, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan and Conrad Thompson.

Pro-Wrestling-Tees-My123CentsI’m also working on naming the monkey. Head to the My 1-2-3 Cents Facebook page and vote on the two finalists. And if you’re looking to add to your wrestling tee shirt addiction, try the new My 1-2-3 Cents shirt on Pro Wrestling Tees.

Be sure to check out Stride Pro Wrestling on Friday, Sept. 21. Learn more about that show and other events here.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 88: Reviewing Nebraska’s Loss to Troy

Ouch. That one stung. No one (probably not even most Troy fans) foresaw the Trojans coming into Memorial Stadium and leaving with a 24-19 win. And it was eerily similar to the loss to Colorado in that the Huskers could not get out of their own way. Turnovers, penalties, play calling all doomed Nebraska in their final game of the non-conference schedule.

Hoss and Hooch are here to provide some game analysis and really try to keep you in a positive mindframe. We’re reminded of this information from our friend #PattheStat:

So buckle up, friends. We never said it’d be easy. We never said it would be immediate. But we will get there. We may have to take a few lumps along the way.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 87: Previewing Saturday vs Troy

Colorado is in the past. It’s time to look forward. And that’s Troy. The Sunbelt Conference champion Trojans are in Lincoln and that means…

OPPONENT PREVIEW TIME!

This week, we are talking with Underdog Dynasty‘s Robert Latty. Robert has some insight to the Trojans’ 1-1 team after their season-opening loss to Boise State and last week’s 59-7 torching of Florida A&M. They lost a lot of skill position players and are at a size disadvantage, but this is a Troy team that went into Death Valley last year and left with a win.

And then…Jon Damn Johnston joins us to share more tales. We talk karaoke (which JDJ has never done) and X’ and O’s, and quarterbacks and knees.

And IF Jon ever does karaoke, here’s the song:

POSITIVE CYNICISM EP. 57: TOP 5 GUILTY PLEASURES

Due to scheduling conflicts and lack of forethought, the newest edition of POPPED CULTURE, or CULTURE POPPED* takes a page out of Tom and Jim’s Top 5 playbook. Don’t call it a rip off. Call it an homage the way Brian DePalma’s films are an homage to Alfred Hitchcock.  @chadsmart and Eric Bennet offer up widely different lists of guilty pleasure films. Films ranging from “what were they thinking” to “box office successes that aren’t held in high regard” these ten films will have you reaching for your streaming service of choice to check out an extreme range of cinematic quality.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 199: What’s Next???

The future…

This week’s show is probably a bit more ‘gloom and doom’ than I intended it to be. I’ve just been doing a lot of self-reflection on and looking at the areas of my branding that are working and not working. I’ve become complacent with the podcast and for that, I apologize.

What’s next? What do you want to hear on the My 1-2-3 Cents podcast? I don’t want people to listen out of loyalty. I want listeners who look forward to a new episode dropping each week. Be honest in your comments.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 86: Huskers Fall to Buffs in Opener

The Huskers lost. There. It’s been said. The opportunity was there to win the game, but mistakes and injuries cost Nebraska their season opener against the hated/neglected Colorado Buffaloes.

In this episode, Hoss and Hooch will review the game, and talk about the many positives that they took away from the true beginning of the Scott Frost Era.

The offensive and defensive lines played really well. Who stood out in the linebacking corps? How about the much-maligned secondary? On the offensive side of the ball, you can’t argue with 329 yards rushing. Credit for that goes to the runners and the offensive line that created holes for them to run through. The wide receivers missed a few opportunities that could have changed the outcome of the game, but still hauled in 19 passes for almost 250 yards.

The big question going forward is Adrian Martinez. How is that knee and how will he be going forward? Only time will tell.

Nerds United Episode 105: Discussing Various Cinematic Universes

In this episode, Greg and Mike discuss some of the cinematic universes, as well as what constitutes a cinematic universe instead of a linear story.

These two former classmates also share some high school stories, including both being in the National Honor Society and then kicked out of the illustrious organization.

The show gets interrupted by Greg’s son who decided that he didn’t need to stay in his bed.

And then we dive deep into the topic at hand: The Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the Worlds of DC, the Universal Monsters Universe and the Monster-verse featuring Godzilla and King Kong.

A brief chat about Captain Marvel at the end that it was go-home time. So give it a listen and follow the show on social media and subscribe on your own favorite podcast app.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 58: Previewing the Colorado Buffaloes

Well, Mother Nature is a cruel mistress who played a tune and danced on all of our hearts last Saturday night. So this Saturday afternoon, your UNDEFEATED Nebraska Cornhuskers will open the season against the pests of the past, the wienies to the west, the Colorado Buffaloes.

In this episode, we’re joined by a writer from Colorado’s SB Nation site, the Ralphie Report. Jeff Hauser covers the Buffs and is also a Heisman voter and FWAA member who took time out of his busy schedule to join us to talk about Colorado’s win in the Rocky Mountain Showdown. Who are some of the key components on the CU team that could be problematic for the Huskers?

And then after the break, it’s the return of Jon Damn Johnston. We are going to bring Jon in every week just to bring our opponents back down to reality. He’s a fan favorite, and by God, he’s our favorite as well. So hear the tale about torn down goalposts and tuxedos and get some predictions for the game. GBR!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 84: Jon Johnston, Our Fearless Leader

We have been building to this moment all summer. Corn Nation founder and heart and soul, Jon “Damn” Johnston!

It’s finally time for our fearless leader to take his place on the Stand, answering the same questions we have posed to our Corn Nation colleagues over the course of the entire series.

Here’s what we learned about Jon:

  • He is from a small town in Nebraska
  • He fought in the Korean War at the age of 5
  • He was the first IT Consultant (probably)
  • His favorite Husker moment elicited a “WTF” from Hoss
  • He really does love all of us.

If that’s not enough reason to listen, then know that he also really rips on the Akron Zips (accidental rhyme, I’m keeping it) and he made Hooch laugh so hard he (Hooch, “pronouns, pal”) had to turn down his microphone.

Seriously, Jon is an amazing person and the reason we are all here. So enjoy this amazing episode of the Five Heart Podcast. #GBR

POSITIVE CYNICISM EP. 56: WONDER WHY; JOAN OSBORNE

We’re traveling back to 1996 asking deep philosophical questions on this edition of Wonder Why. Traveling from Anchorage, Kentucky to New York City, we examine the career of Joan Osborne. Is she a folksy Americana singer? Soulful funk singer? Or Top 40 Pop singer? Based on the sound of her Top 10 hit, “One of Us,” audiences expected one sound but listening to her album Relish, might have been surprised at the other songs.

In addition to the discussion about Joan Osborne, @chadsmart and @mikedekalb give their picks of the month. This month they choose an actor/musician and female alternative icon.

The show concludes with the reveal of choices for the September edition. Bust out the converse, track suits and gold chains.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 197: Make WWE Great Again

Our Six Cents

Chad Smart from Positive Cynicism and I have been pro wrestling fans for more than three decades. We’ve traveled to indy shows together as well as nine different WrestleManias. Despite our love for the business, there are some things we’d tweak and make different. Today’s episode is six things we’d do to make WWE great again. (Although I still think it’s pretty awesome.)

Weigh in and let us know what you’d do if you could make a change or two (or six) within the company. While you’re at it, leave a review of My 1-2-3 Cents on whichever podcasting app you listen to.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 83: Chatting with Andy Ketterson

It’s officially Game Week! And while we have some Husker news and notes to discuss, we still have the Cross Examination to continue. It wraps up later this week when Jon Johnston takes the chair, but in Episode 83, Corn Nation veteran Andy Ketterson sits down to be cross examined, and we learn how he moved to Nebraska as a child, went to the University of Nebraska, became a fan, and dare I say, a diehard.

We also have the ability, due to the late hour of our recording, to talk about the news we learned this weekend. Tre Bryant retires from the game he loves. Adrian Martinez is the announced starter for the Akron game. And the depth chart has few surprises.

Husker football is almost upon us. Enjoy it, my friends.

We did have a few issues with internet connection during the recording. Hopefully you’re able to follow along relatively easy. It got better as the show went on.

Nerds United Episode 104: Old Man Logan, Kingdom Come, The Office and Parks & Rec

Hey kids! Greg and Mike here with a brand new episode of your favorite comic book/pop culture podcast! The numbers are in and we are definitely #1 for this genre in the Southern Illinois area, and will fight any other podcast that tries to claim otherwise (unless you’re bigger than us – ML).

This week, we’re talking about some books that Greg loaned to Mike for his reading pleasure. Then there’s a recap of Greg’s day trip to Chicagoland, which, if you’re wondering, is about the only way to go to Chicagoland. Lots of “windshield time.”

Get Mike’s scoop on Old Man Logan and Kingdom Come. Greg will be passing along some more books to Mike for future reading.

Now the coup de grace is the discussion at the end when the guys discuss The Office and Parks & Recreation. Make sure you stick around for that and share your ideas in the comments on Facebook or join the conversation on Twitter.

Oh Hell Yeah

When Nichole Pate was 14 years old she had no idea what a rebel she’d turn out to be. She simply went to school on a Monday morning wearing an Austin 3:16 t-shirt in 1998. She was sent home as a result. What happened next is pretty awesome.

Nichole and I have a Rebel IPA by Sam Adams as she shares her story. Check out the podcast to find out more… And be sure to visit the @my123cents on Instagram for more pics.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 82: Fan Day Fun

Happy Sunday and GO BIG RED! Welcome to a brand new episode of the Five Heart Podcast, and thank you for subscribing/listening. This week, Hoss is at his sister’s wedding, because she and her husband had the good sense to get married BEFORE football season. But I digress.

Patrick Gerhart joins Greg Mehochko to talk about Huskers Fan Day as well as Fall practices, and a peek into the 2018 season, from which, thankfully, we’re only two weeks away. Is the starting QB situation becoming clear? How are the offensive and defensive lines looking? And in this episode, the guys don’t hesitate to compare this team to last year, as many of the players are the same.

Troy Walters has a cameo (in that we mention his name a few times) and Mario Verduzco is a legit boss!

Nerds United Episode 103: Writer/Artist David Gorden

Back to basics! This type of episode was the very beginning of Nerds United, where I would sit down with a comic book creator and hear their tale, their “origin story,” where I learned how they became interested in comics and how the early interest turned into a lifelong passion and eventually them creating comics themselves.

This week I’m joined by David Gorden, a creator I had the good fortune to meet somewhat accidentally earlier this summer. Hear the story of our initial meeting and hear how David became interested in comic books. In this episode, you’ll learn as I did how personal loss shaped his career, and how sometimes we go back home to get back on track.

David put out a graphic novel earlier this year called “Kwame Hightower and the Man with No Name.” It tells the story of 12-year-old Kwame, a boy from North St. Louis, who pulls Excalibur from the Sacred Stone, thus becoming King of England, and opens Kwame’s life to new adventures and possibilities the likes of which he never even thought about. Pick up your copy of the book on Amazon using the handy link right below, or listen to the end of the episode to hear how you can win an autographed copy of the book yourself.

Before the topic of the month, Eric gives a recap of San Diego Comic Con 2018 and fan reaction to Chris Hardwick missing Comic-Con as well as the news of James Gunn’s firing from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 which broke during the 5 day pop culture convention.

Once the recap is over, the focus switches gears to examine Hollywood’s fascination with sequels and franchise movies. Trying to figure out how the box office has gone from two sequels in the yearly Top Ten for 1980 to nine sequels/remakes/reboots in the Top Ten for 2018 so far, Chad and Eric attempt to break down the shift in focus from making a wide variety of movies to movies that appeal to the largest audience.  Along the way, Chad does make a mistake when talking about the movie Cedar Rapids. The movie stars John C. Reilly not John McGinley.

What is your opinion? Do you think there are too many sequels? Do you enjoy the franchise series?
