This week, Chad Smart joins the show to discuss our favorite Sid moments. Please share yours with us, too.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 438: Going Viral

Perhaps the title of this week’s show is a bit cocky, but it has been an insane week regarding my story about getting kicked out of WrestleMania. And yes, I was kicked out. But there’s more to the story; I share that and all the media attention my TikTok has received. This should be the saga’s final chapter, much to the delight of most people who know me.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 436: WrestleMania IV Recall

It’s hard to believe, but 35 years ago today, WrestleMania IV went down. This show, panned by many, is unique. It’s the first WrestleMania to feature a tournament. It’s the first Mania that Hulk Hogan didn’t wrestle in the main event and was the first Mania for many Superstars, including Ted DiBiase, Rick Rude, and The Ultimate Warrior.

This week on the podcast, I stroll down memory lane with my take on WrestleMania IV and a look ahead to this year’s WrestleMania, which is just a few days away.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 386: The Power of Nostalgia

I have always maintained that nostalgia is a powerful drug. That was very evident during WrestleMania weekend, as fans were treated to not one but two nights of ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin doing what he does best. This week, Chad Smart and I talk about that, and the role nostalgia plays in modern-day wrestling.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 309: Wrestling Under the Influence

Andre the Giant was one of the all-time greats in pro wrestling. His career kind of halted in 1990, and he never received the send-off that I, as a fan, would have liked to have seen.

So this week, I’m rebooking Andre’s final two years in wrestling and doing it with a Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter by my side. Special thanks to Tom Harness for the beer.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 281: WrestleMania Redo

WrestleMania has been a staple not just in pro wrestling but pop culture for 35 years now. I’m proud to say I was around for the first one and have enjoyed the event each year since 1985. That includes the very unique version of WrestleMania 36, held over two nights and in an empty arena.

However, there are some moments in WrestleMania history that fans like to rewrite. That’s the inspiration for an annual tradition I’ve got going here, called WrestleMania Redo. This week Tyler ‘Heath’ Hatton of Stride Pro Wrestling and I talk about a couple of WrestleMania matches that we would rebook.

Let us know what you think of the show and what matches from WrestleManias past you’d rework.

Since everyone is speculating on who Kurt Angle’s last opponent should be, I figured I’d jump on board too. My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 178: Superfan “Rowdy” Roddy Piper

“Hug the ones you love.”

I’m kicking off another new feature here on the My 1-2-3 Cents podcast called “Superfan”. I’ll be having conversations with fellow pro wrestling fans about their all-time favorite wrestler. The first installment is with Barry Karafa from Cape Championship Wrestling.

Barry is a HUGE “Roddy” Roddy Piper fan. The quote you see at the top of this post was handwritten by Hot Rod in a Christmas card he sent to Barry the December before Piper’s death. We talk about that card and other memorabilia Barry has honoring Piper. We also share childhood memories and how Piper influenced the world of professional wrestling. By the way, you can see more of Barry’s collection over on the My 1-2-3 Cents Instagram page.

Barry is also part of CCW. The company is in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and has their ‘WrestleMania’ event this upcoming weekend. CCW: Supershow II is part of the Cape Con weekend. You’ll see all the stars of CCW along with Legends like Dan “The Beast” Severin (former My 1-2-3 Cents podcast guest) and Tommy Dreamer. You can still get tickets to the Supershow.

I’m also a sponsored athlete (stop laughing) for COLLARxELBOW brand. Shop online and use the promo code MY123CENTS and you’ll save 10%.

Looking for the #1 below-the-belt grooming and hygiene company? Look no further. Check out my link to Manscaped and save when you shop here.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 176: This One’s for Lane

We love Lane.

More than two years ago I got involved with Stride Pro Wrestling. One of the first people I met on that first show in March 2016 was Lane Austin. He was one of the referees that night (I think we actually had more than one that evening.) We became fast friends and have made it a tradition to hang out after shows and grab a bite to eat at Applebee’s or Steak ‘n Shake.

Lane is a great referee, but more importantly a great friend. He’s been battling diabetes most of his life and was recently hospitalized as a result of the disease. Now the guy who gives of himself so willingly is going to be the one we’re giving back to. On Saturday, April 7 Stride Pro Wrestling is putting together a big fundraiser in Lane’s honor.

Lane-Austin-Stride

I talked with Heath Hatton who is the man with the plan for Stride Pro Wrestling and one of Lane’s oldest friends. The benefit show is happening at 7 p.m. at the Carterville Community Center. You can get directions here. We’ll also have auctions, concessions and autographed pictures of Stride stars to raise money for our friend.

We know for sure Jay Spade will defend the Stride Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Championship against Tony Flood. Sam Hunter will be the guest on Striking Your Fancy and we’ll find out what’s next for Roger Matheus. Also, I know of at least one former Stride star returning (look close at the poster and you’ll figure it out too). It’s going to be a great night for a great guy. Simply put, we love you Lane. So please come out and support this show.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 174: Our Mania Memories

Chicago to Dallas and all points in between

Chad and I have been to nine WrestleManias since 2006. Our first trip was a three-day weekend to Chicago for WrestleMania 22. From there, our trips became more involved and more fun. In this week’s episode, we talk about all nine trips and our favorite things from each.

If you’ve ever been to WrestleMania, you know it’s not just about the big show on Sunday night. There’s so much to see and do that’s wrestling related. And when you factor in WrestleMania host cities are ‘destination spots’ there’s all kinds of fun to be had.

I’m also a sponsored athlete (stop laughing) for COLLARxELBOW brand. Shop online and use the promo code MY123CENTS and you’ll save 10%.

Fresh Content Day 34: The Lost Art of the Finishing Move

This is going to a) sound old-manish, and 2) possibly infringing on the Kevin’s gimmick over at My 1-2-3 Cents.

I was watching Wrestlemania 33 last night and today over my lunch hour. What I learned – among other things – is that a finishing move isn’t much of a finisher anymore. This isn’t news. It’s just becoming more and more obvious as time goes on.

I remember a time where a big boot and running leg drop was all it took to fell an opponent.

And when the Undertaker gave you a Tombstone Piledriver, you stayed driven heaped in a pile (okay, that one didn’t make much sense).

Right now, I’m going to make the HOT TAG to Kevin Hunsperger for his 1-2-3 cents.

Finishing moves still have a place in wrestling, but it seems on big shows those finishers are often as effective as a screen door on a submarine. Now wrestlers kick out just before the referee’s hand hits the mat for the third time. This type of storytelling is very frustrating as a fan of the old school days of the business.

False finishes are okay from time to time, but at WrestleMania for example, I think a Superstar either kicked out of or broke the finishing maneuver of their opponent in every match. It’s come to be expected these days.

We all know professional wrestling is a show. But I think when you start watering down the moves the men and women have made their signatures it takes away from the realism of the contest at hand. When the Undertaker hits his opponent with a Tombstone, I want the referee to then count three. A kick out on a rare occasion is fine as long as it tells the story at hand. When Kane did it for the first time ever, it was special.

But then Batista, Edge, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, CM Punk, Brock Lesnar, Bray Wyatt and Roman Reigns have kicked out of the finisher at WrestleMania. Some of those mentioned Superstars have kicked out of more than one Tombstone in a match. I suppose this would be fine because there’s a year of separation between incidents, but Seth Rollins kicks out of Triple H’s Pedigree, Kevin Owens escapes the Wall of Jericho and Shane McMahon gets out of the Styles Clash all on the same show. It’s exhausting.

I realize I’m out of the WWE’s target demo. I also realize a lot of indy shows use this style of booking. But I’m from the school of thought when you’re hit with the finisher, you’re done. 1-2-3.

I’m in agreement with Kevin, here. I think the use of finishers has gone by the wayside because no talent wants to look weak in their match, so they all have to kick out at least once (unless it’s “enhancement talent”).

If these moves are no longer finishing off opponents (which is why they’re called finishing moves in the first place), just call them moves, or signature moves, and let’s be done with it. They should be special moves used once to finish the match, or in a crazy twist, as KH said, a false finish once in a while to build up a talent would be smart. But overuse has diminished these moves.

In other words…I’m old and set in my ways.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 124: WrestleMania Recap

Wow. What a night of wrestling. WrestleMania 33 is in the books. Roman Reigns did what he said he was going to do and beat the Undertaker. It appears this may be it for the Deadman. Look for much more on the Undertaker’s career on the My 1-2-3 Cents blog this week.

There are also several new champions in the WWE. Naomi, Brock Lesnar, Kevin Owens, Randy Orton and The Hardy Boyz (yes you read that right) all have gold once again.

The fallout from Mania will be great to follow on Raw and SmackDown Live this week. Be sure to rate and review the podcast as well. Thanks for listening.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 123: WrestleMania Preview

Since 2006, Kevin and Chad have made the trek to WrestleMania, except WrestleManias 23, 31 and now 33. The two discuss this year’s card in depth in this week’s episode, which happens to be 123. Disclaimer: Kevin originally tried booking Sean Waltman “The 1-2-3- Kid” on the show, but came up short.

Are you excited about this year’s WrestleMania? What will be the match of the night? Should Goldberg be going in as Universal Champion? And will the Broken Hardys show up anywhere over WrestleMania week(end)?

Fresh Content Day 24: With Anticipation

Hype! Hype! Hype! If media was a professional wrestler, it’d be one half of the Hype Bros.

The crazy one.

But dammit, I’m so excited to get home tonight and watch Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

I saw it opening weekend (the Saturday showing) with my buddy RJ, and then we had a little conversation about it for the podcast. But if you recall at the time, I stated that I dozed slightly in the theater. It’s not the first time it has happened, but it did occur during a movie that I was very eager to see, and got out of the house to do so.

And I waited until after I saw the movie to listen to podcast reviews or read anything about it, so I know I missed some good, integral parts of the story.

But tonight…all that changes.

I can’t tell you the last time I went into a store and bought a physical movie. I started going the digital route, and am enjoying that immensely. It’s weird. When I lived in a smaller town, I could easily zip over to Wal-Mart and get groceries and browse the movie selection. But now, even though I live in a more populated area and there are clearly more shopping options……none of them are on my way home. And they’re all over-crowded.

So digital it is.

Anticipation is a funny thing. If no one told us to be excited for the newest movie, video game, comic book series (or writer/artist duo), or new album, would we care? But in this era of the 24-hour news cycle, where they have to talk about something all the time, you get more information that you ever probably thought you’d want or need.

Anticipation builds.

We’re on the “Road to Wrestlemania” and we have been since the Royal Rumble. Or more accurately, we have been since the Monday after Wrestlemania last year.

We’re in the middle of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and brackets and boards are filled with anticipation. And unless you had that perfect bracket (and you don’t, thank you Rhode Island), or are a fan of the remaining teams vying for the championship, your interest has probably waned somewhat. The caveat there is if you’re just a basketball fan and love this time of year.

Major League Baseball is getting closer to its opening day.

And there’s already buzz generated for movies that are still a year or more away. And much more hype (or anticipation) will be cultivated at Comic Con.

Since I pre-ordered Rogue One, I technically could have watched it last night after 11pm, but knew I wouldn’t stay awake through the entire thing…again. So I erred on the side of caution. So tonight when I go home, I’m going to hug my son, kiss my wife, have a little dinner, put the boy to bed, record an episode of Corn Nation’s Five Heart Podcast, and watch Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

It’s also why you’re getting this post now – because after I get that recording ready to go, I’m going dark…and hoping to stay awake.

May the Force be with you.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 120: ManiaCrawl

It’s WrestleMania season and that means it’s time for ManiaCrawl. The event made its debut hours before WrestleMania 29 in New Jersey. The concept is simple, wrestling fans in town for WrestleMania or SummerSlam meet at the designated bars and enjoy each others company. ManiaCrawl is also a fundraiser for Connor’s Cure.

But here’s the best part, even if you can’t be there in person, you can help the cause. Donations can be made online. If you are in Orlando for WrestleMania, I highly recommend going. We went last year in Dallas and had a blast. I’ll be back for New Orleans.

Keep an eye on the My 1-2-3 Cents blog and social media sites. I’ll have thoughts on FastLane posted there this week, along with everything else going on in the world of professional wrestling.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 91: Cheers to ManiaCrawl

ManiaCrawl2
A toast to ManiaCrawl

A few years ago a couple of wrestling fans came up with a way to unit fans before two of the WWE’s biggest events of the year, WrestleMania and SummerSlam. ManiaCrawl is held the afternoon of those events now at a bar in the host city. Hundreds of fans participate and help raise money for Connor’s Cure.

Prior to SummerSlam, KBH Bierhall in Brooklyn is hosting ManiaCrawl. Bill Apter will be there too, signing copies of his new book. Admission is free, but donations will be collected at the event. To date, ManiaCrawl has raised about $2,700.

Chad and I stopped by ManiaCrawl in Dallas earlier this year. I got in a quick episode of Craftbeericans while I was there.

You can find ManiaCrawl on social media, be sure to follow and like their pages. You can buy t-shirts and make donations to Connor’s Cure if you aren’t able to make it to the bar.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 74: We Want the Funk

The annual Cape Comic Con was held this past weekend in Cape Girardeau, MO. Two of the featured guests were WWE Hall of Famers Terry Funk and “Cowboy” Bob Orton.

These two legends held a Q&A discussion, taking questions from the audience. Favorite matches, Cowboy Bob Orton’s Wrestlemania I experience, their favorite ribs, the evolution of the business, and sharing their love of the industry with their family.

Then they took pictures with the fans in the panel before returning to their booth. They held another meet & greet before the Wrestling at the Arena later Saturday evening.

Nerds United Episode 63: Comic Con and Wrestling Return to Cape Girardeau

It’s Wrestlemania Sunday and that means we’re only two weeks away from the Cape Comic Con.

logo_2015

Time to visit with my friend Ken Murphy, organizer of the annual event. We talk about the new additions to the event, like Wrestling at the Arena, Trivia Night, a Steampunk Panel, Tea Duel, and more. The Costume Contest, all-day gaming, art show, and Acting Out are all back for another great year.

Here I am talking with Ken Murphy, Cape Comic Con organizer. Thanks to the Cape Girardeau newspaper "The Southeast Missourian" for capturing the moment.
Ken and I when we talked at the 2014 Cape Con. I need a shave again.

I’m looking forward to returning to the event and this year, I’m taking the whole family. As I say at the end of the chat, if you’re in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, or Arkansas…or you don’t mind a little travel for a great weekend, head out to the Eleventh Annual Cape Con. It really is a great time filled with wonderful people. You won’t regret it.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 71: WrestleMania Here We Come!

By Kevin Hunsperger

After taking off a year, Chad and I are heading back to WrestleMania.  We’ll be in Dallas later this week for Axxess, NXT, the Hall of Fame, WrestleMania and Monday Night Raw.  So we figured in this episode we share thoughts on the Hall of Fame Class of 2016 and the card as it stands for WrestleMania.  We also provide a little insight into the show we’re both looking most forward to, NXT: Dallas.

Are you going to WrestleMania this year?  Send us a message on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (@my123cents) or you can reach out to me on Twitter (@kevinhunsperger) or Instagram (@kevin_hunsperger).  I’m planning to use the Facebook live feature on the My 1-2-3 Cents page throughout the weekend (no illegal streaming will be done).

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 69: We Love WrestleMania

HERO
Meeting Chris Hero at WrestleMania 26

Ten years ago Chad and I attended our first WrestleMania.  We made a road trip to Chicago for a weekend of wrestling that included a Ring of Honor show, the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony and WrestleMania 22.

For me, it was a dream come true.  I was content with that one trip.  But I also knew if the opportunity came up again I wanted to go.  Luckily for me, it came up again and again and again.  Chad and I have have been to eight of the last ten WrestleManias.  We’re heading to Texas next month for our 11th.

In this episode of the show we talk about our favorite memories and moments.  It’s not just about the ‘Mania.  It’s the fun in getting to each destination, the other events we attend and of course the WrestleMania atomsphere.

Thanks for tuning in and sharing the show.  Read more on the My 1-2-3 Cents blog as well as Breaking Wrestling News.  You can follow @my123cents on Twitter and Instagram and like the My 1-2-3 Cents Facebook page.  And coming soon, new videos to the My 1-2-3 Cents YouTube channel.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 66: Shane’s (and WWE’s) Big Undertaking

Undertaker vs Shane McMahon

The mystery of who The Undertaker will face at his 24th WrestleMania has finally been solved.  The Deadman will step into the Hell in a Cell once again at the biggest show of the year.  This time against Shane McMahon.

It’s a bold move and something most fans didn’t see coming.  I’d read countless blogs and posts from fans speculating everyone from John Cena to Samoa Joe to even Goldberg as being Undertaker’s opponent.

Chad and I talk more about the decision to put Shane in the match and what things WWE could be doing to make WrestleMania more appealing.  Other matches announced so far: Roman Reigns challenging Triple H for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and Brock Lesnar squaring off against Dean Ambrose in a Street Fight.

Don’t forget, this is also your last chance to enter the “Road to WrestleMania” contest.  Answer the question in this week’s show at the My 1-2-3 Cents Facebook page.  Prizes include a three-month subscription to WrestleCrate, a Sting prize pack and a $25 gift card to WWE Shop.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 64: Breaking Wrestling News

12208573_931661806905663_2157433421786944648_n

I recently was asked to start contributing to the new website Breaking Wrestling News.  A trio of fans put the site together in late 2015.  Greg DeMarco, Mike Bessler and Joe Burgett are the founders of the site.

There are several contributors, covering wrestling promotions around the world as well as MMA.  On this week’s podcast, I chat with Greg about his experiences with the site and some of his memories as a wrestling fan.

He has a very interesting take on what will happen at FastLane and eventually Wrestlemania 32.  We also discuss a few of the past week’s big news headlines, including Daniel Bryan’s retirement, his future with the company and Titus O’Neil’s suspension.  Listen closely, as I ask a question for the “Road to Wrestlemania” contest based on Greg’s thoughts for Wrestlemania.  You can answer it on Facebook.

You can follow Breaking Wrestling News on Facebook and Twitter.  Also, check out My 1-2-3 Cents the blog.  Follow us on Twitter and Instagram (@my123cents on both) and subscribe to the YouTube channel.  I posted a new video this past week and plan to do more soon.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 62: Random Ramblings

wrestlingmokey_final

There’s plenty going on in the world of professional wrestling.  This week, Kevin and Chad talk at length about a few of the things happening.

Awesome Kong has been sent home from an overseas tour with TNA after an incident with Reby Sky in the locker room.  Read more on Breaking Wrestling News.  Could this lead to the return of Kharma to WWE?

The Rock and Lana had quite an exchange backstage at Raw recently.  So much so that WWE issued an apology for some of the things “The Great One” said to the “Ravishing Russian.”  Do comments like that reflect poorly on WWE and their overall treatment of women?

Injuries are plaguing WWE right now. John Cena, Seth Rollins and Cesaro are just a handful of the Superstars out right now.  Kevin and Chad tackle the issue and discuss the fate of Daniel Bryan as well.

Plus, tune in for this week’s My 1-2-3 Cents Road to Wrestlemania contest question.  Send a PRIVATE message on our Facebook page.  Also, I promised a link to Lucha Underground if you don’t have the El Rey Network.  Here it is: Lucha Underground Season 2, Episode 1.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 61: Game On

There’s a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.  Triple H returned to the 2016 Royal Rumble to capture the coveted prize for the 14th time.  Roman Reigns put up a valiant effort, but in the end it wasn’t enough to overcome the Authority and the League of Nations.

Kevin and Chad chat more about the Rumble match and what’s next for Triple H as champ and who he should face at Wrestlemania.  Brock Lesnar, the Wyatt Family and plenty of other Superstars get some love during this show, including the six who made their Rumble debut.  Those Superstars include AJ Styles, who also made his WWE debut at the Rumble, as well as Neville, Braun Strowman, Tyler Breeze, Kevin Owens and Zami Zayn.

The guys also share details about new contest leading to Wrestlemania.  There will be three different winners and prizes include a 3-month subscription to WrestleCrate, a $25 WWE Shop gift card and a Sting prize pack.  Be sure to listen to the show for the first week’s question.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 60: You Can’t Outwork a Fork

Tyler golds
Tyler “Heath” Hatton

It’s a new year, and many people have resolved to get into shape.  Nearly three weeks into 2016, I’m still visiting the gym four times a week with the help of a personal trainer.

My friend, Tyler “Heath” Hatton, is the general manager at the Gold’s Gym near my home.  He recently offered to help get me into shape.  For those who have followed the My 1-2-3 Cents blog know that for years I’ve been trying to find my abs.

After several starts and stops, I’m ready to rededicate myself to the mission and I believe Tyler will help me achieve my fitness goals.

One of the things we discuss is nutrition and how important it is in any fitness plan.  As you’ll find out in the interview you can’t outwork a fork.  In the past, I’ve failed to realize that.  Now I’m eating healthier, drinking more water and cutting out sweets.  You can do it too!  Listen to this show to get motivated.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 59: No Cena? No Problem

John Cena Photo courtesy: WWE
Former WWE champion John Cena has undergone successful shoulder surgery.  But as he recovers, it appears he will not be a part of Wrestlemania for the first time in more than a decade.  What kind of impact will his absence have on the WWE’s biggest event of the year?

Kevin and Chad talk about that scenario and look at what the company can do to make the lack of Cena, as well as Seth Rollins and possibly Randy Orton and Cesaro less severe.  The two also talk about the 2016 Royal Rumble and who should walk out the champ as well as speculation that members of the Bullet Club are WWE/NXT bound.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 50: Vacant Wins Again

Courtesy: WWE

WWE World Heavyweight champion Seth Rollins was recently injured in a match against Demon Kane.  That knee injury will keep Rollins out of the game for six to nine months.
