My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 190: The Pounce Seen ‘Round the World

Pounced

Pro wrestling no doubt has had its share of memorable moments. We just recently marked the 20 year anniversary of Mick Foley being thrown off the top of the Hell in a Cell by the Undertaker. Recently another thrilling moment happened, this time on the indy wrestling scene.

Empire State Wrestling Interstate Champion Anthony Gaines was defending his title against Ace Romero. Chances are you’ve seen what happened in the match. Romero, who is about 300 pounds heavier than Gaines, hit him with a pounce that launched Gaines like I’ve never seen before. Watch it here.

Gaines and I talk all about the experience and his time training as a pro wrestler. He’s clearly a man who is dedicated to the business and I wish him nothing but the best in this crazy world of pro wrestling.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 189: Wrestling Under the Influence ‘Anti-Hero’

Wrestling Under the Influence

Chad Smart, the host of Positive Cynicism, was in town for the afternoon recently and I always like recording podcasts in person. So it seemed like a great time to do just that. He’s not much of a beer drinker, but I wanted to get his take on Anti-Hero by Revolution Brewing in Chicago.

If you’re new to the Wrestling Under the Influence concept, we drink a craft beer and tie it to wrestler or angle in wrestling. Here are the previous shows:

Two Brothers
Death By Coconut

For the Anti-Hero beer we discuss a few anti-heroes in pro wrestling; including “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Roman Reigns and CM Punk. I also give a shout out to my friend in Stride Pro Wrestling, Ax Allwardt.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 188: Favorite Wrestling Storylines

Our 6 Cents

It’s time for another installment of ‘Our 6 Cents’, a concept we clearly ripped off from Tom & Jim’s Top 5. This month Chad Smart from Positive Cynicism and I are counting down our favorite pro wrestling storylines. Between the two of us, we have about 70 years of fandom in pro wrestling. So yes we’re old and we explore a lot of ground with this topic.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 187: Arron Brooks

Meet Brookspool

I’ve met a lot of amazing performers in my seven years of indy wrestling. Arron Brooks is one of them. He has come a long way from his days as AT Brooks. That evolution is part of the conversation in this week’s podcast. We talk about his wrestling fandom along with his love for comic books, Star Wars and Power Rangers.

Arron wrestles around the Midwest. He’s looking to grow his appearances. You can connect with Arron via his Facebook page.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 186: #AskMy123Cents

Q&A Time

Sometimes life gets a little crazy. There was no time for a guest this week and no Stride Pro Wrestling shows to promote or recap, so I went back to the standby of doing an Ask My 1-2-3 Cents episode.

Several listeners shared questions on social media, so I tackle those this week. I also pose a question for you. When Chad and I do another Our 6 Cents episode, what topic would you like us to cover? Weigh in here or send a message via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 185: Superfan “Macho Man” Randy Savage

“Cream of the crop”

“Macho Man” Randy Savage is one of the all-time greats in the world of professional wrestling. I have fond memories of Savage during his run in the WWF and the build-up to him winning the championship 30 years ago.

This week on the podcast, it’s another Superfan edition. Lane Austin, Stride Pro Wrestling referee and Cape Championship Wrestling general manager, is a “Macho Man” Superfan. So I asked him about his fandom of Savage and some of his favorite memories. We chatted prior to a recent Stride Pro Wrestling event in Christopher, Illinois.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 184: I Survived Roger Matheus

Survivor

If you’ve been following along here on the podcast, you know I’m involved in a company called Stride Pro Wrestling. For more than two years I’ve been the ring announcer for the company. However, over the weekend I stepped into the ring.

I was part of the main event inside a steel cage against Roger Matheus. He is known as the Mad Viking. I really can’t tell you how honored I am to be a part of Stride and that there was enough confidence and faith in me and Roger to be the main event of the show.

Hunsperger-Matheus-Stride

Roger kicked my ass literally and figuratively. My buddy Tom Harness made the save, at least momentarily. Then he got whipped. But in the end, Cash Borden showed up. Listen to the podcast and hear how it all went down. Thanks, everyone.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 182: ‘Dr. D’ David Schultz

Don’t Call Me Fake

‘Dr. D’ David Schultz may be one of the most controversial figures in professional wrestling. For those who don’t remember, in 1984 he was involved in an incident with ABC News reporter John Stossel. He shares the story on this week’s podcast and of course, has more details in his new book Don’t Call Me Fake: The Real Story of ‘Dr. D’ David Schultz. You can get a copy here:

Schultz is headed to SICW on Saturday, May 19 in East Carondelet, Illinois. Promoter Herb Simmons joins us on the podcast to talk more about the event, which features the Bruiser Brody Memorial Battle Royal and celebrates the 59th anniversary of Wrestling at the Chase.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 181: Things Just Got Personal

Heading for the Cage

I’ve been a longtime fan of pro wrestling. And I’m proud to say I’ve been involved with some of the finest independent wrestling companies in southern Illinois. I’m extremely grateful for my current role as the ring announcer in Stride Pro Wrestling.

But now I find myself once again backed into a corner and having to defend not only myself but my 12-year-old daughter. You can hear the whole story on the podcast this week. But yes, I am stepping into the ring, this time surrounded by a steel cage against Roger Matheus on Saturday, May 26 at Pinckneyville High School.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 180: Wrestling Under the Influence ‘Two Brothers’

Brotherly Love

It’s another episode of Wrestling Under the Influence. This week I’m joined by my buddy Dan Turnquist and we tackle 21st Anniversary by Two Brothers Brewing Company. Full disclosure, when I looked at the can, I thought the name of the beer was two brothers and that’s why I picked it. I figured we could talk about our favorite brothers in pro wrestling.

The actual beer we drank is the 21st Anniversary. However, we did just go ahead and talk about the brothers of wrestling we like the most. Some are related by blood, others are related by a storyline. However, as we discuss wrestling, in general, is a brotherhood, so it’s all good.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 179: Cape Comic Con Weekend

Ready for a Nerdgasm

What a weekend. It all started off Friday afternoon with a trip to Cape Girardeau, Missouri to interview Lou Ferrigno (you know, The Incredible Hulk). My buddy Tom Harness and I did that interview for our new show Another Round with Tom & Kevin. Lou was in town for the 13th annual Cape Comic Con.

Lou was a great guest and took time to talk with us before and after the interview. We appreciate his time and organizer, Ken Murphy, hooking us up. From there we stopped by the Broadway Biergarten for a 420 beer by Lagunitas. (It was 4/20 after all.)

Saturday we returned to Cape for the actual Comic-Con event and followed it up with Cape Championship Wrestling‘s Super Show II. Tom and I review the weekend on the way back to southern Illinois Saturday night. Check it out and also go watch that interview with Lou Ferrigno. Here’s the link. Thanks to everyone for the support.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 178: Superfan “Rowdy” Roddy Piper

“Hug the ones you love.”

I’m kicking off another new feature here on the My 1-2-3 Cents podcast called “Superfan”. I’ll be having conversations with fellow pro wrestling fans about their all-time favorite wrestler. The first installment is with Barry Karafa from Cape Championship Wrestling.

Barry is a HUGE “Roddy” Roddy Piper fan. The quote you see at the top of this post was handwritten by Hot Rod in a Christmas card he sent to Barry the December before Piper’s death. We talk about that card and other memorabilia Barry has honoring Piper. We also share childhood memories and how Piper influenced the world of professional wrestling. By the way, you can see more of Barry’s collection over on the My 1-2-3 Cents Instagram page.

Barry is also part of CCW. The company is in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and has their ‘WrestleMania’ event this upcoming weekend. CCW: Supershow II is part of the Cape Con weekend. You’ll see all the stars of CCW along with Legends like Dan “The Beast” Severin (former My 1-2-3 Cents podcast guest) and Tommy Dreamer. You can still get tickets to the Supershow.

Mania Moments

WrestleMania 34 is in the books. I take a few minutes and talk about some of my favorite highlights from this year’s show. What did you like the most about it?

Also, I look ahead to the upcoming Stride Pro Wrestling event (April 14) at Roadhouse Harley Davidson in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. There are lots of great things coming to Stride Pro Wrestling. My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 176: This One’s for Lane

We love Lane.

More than two years ago I got involved with Stride Pro Wrestling. One of the first people I met on that first show in March 2016 was Lane Austin. He was one of the referees that night (I think we actually had more than one that evening.) We became fast friends and have made it a tradition to hang out after shows and grab a bite to eat at Applebee’s or Steak ‘n Shake.

Lane is a great referee, but more importantly a great friend. He’s been battling diabetes most of his life and was recently hospitalized as a result of the disease. Now the guy who gives of himself so willingly is going to be the one we’re giving back to. On Saturday, April 7 Stride Pro Wrestling is putting together a big fundraiser in Lane’s honor.

Lane-Austin-Stride

I talked with Heath Hatton who is the man with the plan for Stride Pro Wrestling and one of Lane’s oldest friends. The benefit show is happening at 7 p.m. at the Carterville Community Center. You can get directions here. We’ll also have auctions, concessions and autographed pictures of Stride stars to raise money for our friend.

We know for sure Jay Spade will defend the Stride Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Championship against Tony Flood. Sam Hunter will be the guest on Striking Your Fancy and we’ll find out what’s next for Roger Matheus. Also, I know of at least one former Stride star returning (look close at the poster and you’ll figure it out too). It’s going to be a great night for a great guy. Simply put, we love you Lane. So please come out and support this show.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 175: Wrestling Under the Influence ‘Death by Coconut’

Wrestling Under the Influence

When I was in college I dreamed of attending WrestleMania X and having a beer. I picked ten specifically because that was the year I turned 21. So wrestling and beer have been a part of me for decades now. They’re a great tag team and now I’m finally kicking off a new segment on the My 1-2-3 Cents podcast.

Wrestling Under the Influence (name credit to Dennis Wyatt) will include a conversation between me and a fellow wrestling fan. We’ll share a beer and our memories on a point in wrestling that we tie into the beverage selected. On this first installment, it is Death by Coconut by Oskar Blues Brewery. Since coconut is in the name, I had to dedicate the beer to ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper and ‘Superfly’ Jimmy Snuka.

My fellow Craftbeerican and beginner pro wrestling fan, Tom Harness joins me for this conversation. We review the beer and talk about one of the most memorable wrestling angles from the 1980s.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 174: Our Mania Memories

Chicago to Dallas and all points in between

Chad and I have been to nine WrestleManias since 2006. Our first trip was a three-day weekend to Chicago for WrestleMania 22. From there, our trips became more involved and more fun. In this week’s episode, we talk about all nine trips and our favorite things from each.

If you’ve ever been to WrestleMania, you know it’s not just about the big show on Sunday night. There’s so much to see and do that’s wrestling related. And when you factor in WrestleMania host cities are ‘destination spots’ there’s all kinds of fun to be had.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 172: ManiaCrawl 2018

Cheers to ManiaCrawl!

WrestleMania is just weeks away, but before the Superstars of the WWE take to the Superdome in New Orleans, fans will gather for the fifth annual ManiaCrawl. The event is a bar crawl and fundraiser for Connor’s Cure. Connor was the little boy who died a few years ago after a valiant battle with cancer.

WWE created the foundation to help other children going through cancer. The folks behind ManiaCrawl are not affiliated with WWE but do work with Connor’s Cure. The events have raised thousands of dollars so far. If you’re in New Orleans for Mania, consider stopping by. If you’re not going to be there this year, you can still help here.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 171: Tony Flood

The Northern Saint

About two years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Tony Flood. He was in the main event of the first-ever Stride Pro Wrestling show. He impressed me that night, despite not walking away with the Stride Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Championship. Flood went on to win the Legacy Championship twice but never received another shot at the big title until now. He faces his childhood buddy, Jay Spade, on Saturday, March 3 in Christopher, Illinois.

Tony and I talk about his past with Jay and his career up until this point. He’s not even 30 but already has more than a decade of experience in the ring under his belt. We also discuss his influences and why he considers this upcoming match to be the most important of his career.

Brothers from the same mother

This week on the podcast, I had a chance to talk with Tom and Jason Skull. They’re the hosts of the Skullbuster Wrestlecast on Podbean. The “brothers from the same mother” have a quality show each week, covering news and a relevant topic. They’re both fountains of wrestling knowledge, with Jason even being the current Ring General Radio Battlebowl Trivia Champion.

Stride Pro Wrestling and Cape Championship Wrestling each have shows coming up soon. The next Stride event is Saturday, March 3 and CCW returns on Saturday, Feb. 24.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 169: Rasslin’ Ramblings

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 168: ‘No Love Lost’ fallout

No Love Lost

Stride Pro Wrestling’s latest show No Love Lost 2 featured several great matches, including the Stride Rumble to determine a new number one contender for the heavyweight championship. General Manager Sam Hunter also announced Chris Hargas is injured and will be out for an extended period of time. That means he’s vacated the Legacy Championship. Find out what happens next with that title in this week’s episode.

The end of the night featured yours truly getting manhandled again by a Stride star. This time it was Roger Matheus who attempted to hurt me. There are more details on that on the show too. Also, we have three shows coming up in March. The 3rd, 10, and 17th we’ll be all over the region. Be sure to check out the Stride Pro Wrestling Facebook page for updates and to SEE Saturday night’s show.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 166: Best Raw Moments

Uncut, uncensored and uncooked

Raw 25 is happening tonight. It’s hard to believe Monday Night Raw has been running for a quarter century. I have fond memories of the early days watching while I was in college. There have been countless memories that have been created by this show and the talented men and women both on camera and behind the scenes.

This week Chad and I return with Our Six Cents as we countdown to our six favorite moments from Raw over the last 25 years. Listen to the list and let us know what your favorites are.

We have actually been to a handful of Raws together. In Orlando where we were on the opposite side of the hard cam and showed up on the show. What are your favorite moments from Raw?

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 164: Samoa Joe

Hello Joe…

My job as a journalist has opened some doors to do interviews with current WWE Superstars. When the company comes to our region I always try to get someone on the morning show I co-anchor and use the rest of the interview on this podcast. In 2010 I was lucky enough to meet the Miz in person and do an on-camera interview with him. Check it out here.

This time around when WWE came to the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri; my friend Will Gorman (Director of the SMC) hooked me up with Samoa Joe. While I enjoy doing the Superstar interviews they are by and large short and sweet because it’s part of a media tour of sorts. So my conversation with Joe is quick and WWE focused. But I hope you enjoy it.

You’ll also hear more about the upcoming Stride Cup Tournament at this Saturday’s (Jan. 13) Stride Pro Wrestling show at the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion. Bell time is 6:30 p.m. and tickets are just $10 for adults and $5 for kids. So please join us if you’re in the area.

Also on the show, Chris Hargas captured the Legacy Championship from Tony Flood and Bull Bronson made his Stride Pro Wrestling return. The DR Party had their clocks cleaned by Ax Allwardt, Jerry Travelstead and Jan Peterson.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 160: Buried Alive review & what’s next

Buried Alive thrives

The first ever Buried Alive match in Stride Pro Wrestling is in the books. You can read all about it (or just listen to today’s show) on the My 1-2-3 Cents blog. Both men make me proud to be a professional wrestling fan and a member of the Stride Pro Wrestling team.

But we can’t totally dwell on the past. Stride Pro Wrestling is at it again this weekend. On Saturday, Dec. 16 we head to Woodlawn Grade School to do a fundraiser event. Roger Matheus will defend the Stride Pro Wrestling Heavyweight title against Jay Spade in a Last Man Standing match. It’s also a first in Stride.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 158: The Ugly Christmas Suit Guys

Ugly Christmas Suit Guys

In 2014 my buddy Tom Harness from Harness Digital Marketing started a one-man fundraising campaign. He put on an ugly Christmas suit made by Shinesty and Opposuits. Through the years the project has grown and for 2017, Tom has asked me to join the effort.

Ugly-Christmas-Suit

You can make a donation here and help the group Children’s Home + Aid. It’s a group that works with adoptive families in southern Illinois. They provide year-round support to those families. Right now they serve about 150 families and get no assistance from the state of Illinois. So we want to make a big difference in their lives.

Tom is a digital marketing guru. He shares tips for wrestlers to build a brand. Tom is also an old school wrestling fan. He recalls guys like Junkyard Dog, Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Jimmy Hart. But I’ve recently reintroduced Tom to wrestling and he’s attended a few Stride Pro Wrestling and Cape Championship Wrestling shows.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 157: 6 Cents The Thanksgiving Show

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was a huge day for professional wrestling back in the day. There was Survivor Series and Starrcade held on the holiday. And even before then, many companies ran house shows on Turkey Day. Chad and I have a list of guests for Thanksgiving dinner.

Admittedly, Chad is more creative with his list. But listen anyway as we go through and explain why we have the guests we selected.  It’s a fun show. We recorded before the 2017 Survivor Series but we do offer some thoughts on NXT: WarGames.

If you’re looking for some indy wrestling action this upcoming weekend, IWA Productions returns to Fairfield, Illinois on Saturday, Nov. 25. Cape Championship Wrestling has a show that same night in Delta, Missouri. Stride Pro Wrestling‘s “Buried Alive” event is coming up Saturday, Dec. 9.

I recently had a chance to talk to one of the wrestlers for MWF, Lil Show. He’s been wrestling for 13 years and has enjoyed his time in the MWF more than anywhere else. We discuss the challenges in the ring and the up and downs of being on the road.

Also on this episode, a preview of Stride Pro Wrestling‘s Buried Alive event. That match is happening between Red Daniels and Chris Hargas on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion. Bell time is 6:30 p.m.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 155: “Hitman” Jake Capone

Meet The Hitman

I met “The Hitman” Jake Capone several years ago before I even got involved in independent wrestling. I was writing the My 1-2-3 Cents blog and needed someone who had the Halloween Havoc DVDs. Jake responded to my post on Facebook and we met over on the campus of SIU.

Later Jake and I would reconnect in All American Pro Wrestling and stay in touch through the years before Stride Pro Wrestling became a thing. While in Stride, Jake reformed the Midwest Mafia with Red Daniels and Roger Matheus. He shares that story during our interview.

Be sure to follow him on social media. Jake is on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. He now lives in Florida, so if you’re in the Pensacola area, check out the wrestling shows available there. He’s most recently wrestled for Coastal Wrestling Federation.

My 1-BOO-3 Cents: Halloween Havoc 2017

Halloween Havoc 2017

I had big plans for the Halloween edition of My 1-2-3 Cents. More than just changing the name to My 1-BOO-3 Cents for sure. However, my attempts to line up a Halloween-ish wrestler fell short. So I was left to come up with something else.

I drew inspiration for this show from the Skullbuster WrestlecastTom & Jason Skull did some fantasy booking on their last show and created a Halloween Havoc style card with the current WWE roster. I didn’t want to totally rip the brothers off, so I came up with this…

WWE recently released a list of its 50 scariest Superstars of all time. So I took that list and created matches and of my own. Also on this week’s episode, a rundown of the upcoming Stride Pro Wrestling show. The action returns to the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion on Saturday, Nov. 4. Bell time is 6:30 p.m.

Don’t forget, I’m also now a part of COLLARxELBOW. You can shop online and use the promo code MY123CENTS to save on t-shirts when you shop. The company has added some new shirts in recent weeks. It’s a great way to support indy wrestling and My 1-2-3 Cents. Thanks as always for your support.

Beer and wrestling seemingly go hand and hand. I had a big vision for this week’s episode. I attended the Big Muddy Monster Brew Fest in Murphysboro, Illinois with some friends over the weekend. Since I didn’t have a guest I thought it would be fun to find different craft beers and tie them in with wrestling. The first few reviews recorded just fine, but somewhere along the way, the other recordings stopped. I’m disappointed this happened, but I do believe I still have some good content in this episode. I’ll plan better for next year, as I do like the idea of pairing wrestlers with beer.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 152: Stride Pro Wrestling recap

Stride Pro Wrestling returns

Stride Pro Wrestling has had two great shows in October. The most recent happened Saturday night. There was a title change that night. Listen for more details. This week’s show is dedicated to all things indy wrestling. I discuss the latest with Stride and an update on Cape Championship Wrestling.

There’s also a statement from popular Stride star Cash Borden. Listen for details on why he is no longer with the company. Plus, the first-ever match for Stride has been announced for the December 9 show. But before we get there, Jay Spade gets his championship rematch against Roger Matheus.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 151: 6 Cents Favorite Kane Moments

Hellfire & brimstone it’s Kane!

It’s hard to believe, but the character Kane has officially been around for 20 years. The Big Red Machine debuted on October 5, 1997. Ironically (or maybe not) Chad and I were in attendance that night at the Kiel Center in St. Louis. We wouldn’t meet for another six and a half years though.

By Barry Karafa

So for this week’s episode, we are sharing our ‘6 Cents’ on the career of Kane and our top six memories of the former WWE Champion.  We also share some of our listeners’ thoughts of Kane, including the photo to your left of a little guy named Rollins. His dad, Barry Kafara with Cape Championship Wrestling, shared it with us and talked about Kane’s longevity as a character.

It’s hard to argue Kane is one of the all-time great characters (or gimmicks) in wrestling. Few Superstars have the staying power Kane did. Undertaker, Goldust and Triple H may be the only ones, at least off the top of my head.

On a different note, Stride Pro Wrestling returns to the Illinois Star Centre Mall on Saturday, Oct. 14. Come in a Halloween costume and celebrate with us. Bell time is 6:30 p.m. The Stride Championship is up for grabs in a best two-out-of-three falls match between Roger Matheus and Jay Spade.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 150: Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat

Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat

Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat has been a part of pro wrestling for more than 40 years. My first memories date back to his run with Crockett Promotions. I had read up about the Dragon in the Apter magazines and in 1985 made his WWF debut. I never thought back then I’d have a chance to interview the Superstar.

But that’s who the guest is for episode 150 of My 1-2-3 Cents the Podcast. The Dragon is going to be a part of fundraiser event Rasslin’ in the ‘Ville. The show is Friday, Oct. 6 at Community Consolidated School 204 in Pinckneyville, Illinois. Steamboat will do a meet & greet beginning at 5 p.m. Then the action for Stride Pro Wrestling begins at 6:30 p.m. You can get ticket information here.

I’d also like to do a quick shout out to my friends over at Podzilla 1985. They interviewed Jeff Hardy at CCW (Cape Championship Wrestling) FanFest. It’ll drop Wednesday on the show Pro Wrestling Unscripted. Find them on Facebook.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 149: Jay Spade

Jay Spade

Jay Spade and I have quite a history together in professional wrestling. We first met in 2011 in All American Pro Wrestling. Jay was a fearless guy who had a heart of gold. He even defended me when I was being bullied by Mike Masters. Spade helped me win my match in 2012 against Masters.

Spade is flying high again, this time in Stride Pro Wrestling. He is the number one contender to the heavyweight championship, held by “Big” Roger Matheus. The two will face off at Rasslin’ in the ‘Ville on Friday, Oct. 6. By the way, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat will be on hand at that event in Pinckneyville too. You can learn more on Stride’s Facebook page.

Match of the Week

After a bit of a hiatus, Match of the Week is back. This week, I’m paying tribute to Bobby Heenan and this gem that Chad sent me. It’s Bobby Heenan vs. Lord Alfred Hayes in the AWA, circa 1980. Enjoy.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 148: Lisa Marie Varon

Lisa Marie Varon

When the book of women’s wrestling is written, there will no doubt be a chapter on our guest this week, Lisa Marie Varon. Fans remember her best as Victoria in WWE. The former two-time Women’s Champion helped pave the way for what we see in 2017 from the women in the ring.

Victoria has the distinction of being the first woman to win a steel cage match on Monday Night Raw. She beat Lita (with some help from Matt Hardy).  She went on to have success in TNA as Tara, winning the Knockouts Championship five times. Lisa Marie Varon now wrestles on the independents and has a show coming up against ODB in Nashville on Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Nashville Fairgrounds. Learn more here.

Lisa Marie shares her experiences in the WWE and how she ended up getting into the ring. Fun fact, she was once a ho for the Godfather.

Lisa-Marie-Matt-Hardy
Lisa Marie Varon, Kevin Hunsperger and Matt Hardy

As you can see in the photos, I met Victoria at WrestleMania 22 in Chicago and again at WrestleMania 24 in Orlando. It was one of those quick meet and greet sessions, but she was very nice to the fans coming through. Nowadays, she’s active on social media and interacts with fans there was well.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 147: Stride Pro Wrestling ‘September Fallout’

Stride Pro Wrestling recap

Wow. What a night for Stride Pro Wrestling. September Fallout is in the books and was one of the most chaotic cards in the history of Stride. Unfortunately, I also became a part of that chaos. You can hear more about it in this week’s show.

This episode is a recap of everything that happened and a look ahead to the upcoming show on Friday, Oct. 6 in Pinckneyville. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat will be the guest that night. Also, Stride returns a week later on Saturday, Oct. 14. We’ll countdown to both shows right here on the podcast.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 146: JD Wilk

“Don’t follow your dreams, chase them.” That’s the mantra on this week’s guest JD Wilk. He’s a rising star in both Stride Pro Wrestling and Cape Championship Wrestling. He’ll be teaming up with Jay Spade against “Big” Roger Matheus and Farmer Billy Hills. Wilk talks about his beginnings, the obstacles he’s overcome along the way and his future in professional wrestling.

You can keep up with all things Stride Pro Wrestling via the Facebook page or the My 1-2-3 Cents blog. The next show is this Saturday night, Sept. 9 at the Illinois Star Centre Mall. Bell time is 6:30.

I also want to do a shout out to a few other podcasts I’ve become a big fan of. Besides the shows here on the Jittery Monkey Podcasting Network (Positive Cynicism, Nerds United and the Five Heart Podcast) I am also a big fan of Tom & Jim’s Top 5, Skullbuster Wrestling and Podzilla 1985. Also, Bruce Prichard and Conrad Thompson are helping folks impacted by Hurricane Harvey with Love for Houston. You can make a donation to the Red Cross here.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 145: Six Cents Favorite Summer Moments

Chad Smart from Positive Cynicism and I have taken a page out of the book of podcast Tom & Jim’s Top 5. Instead of sharing our top 5, we’ve changed things up and are doing a top 6 show at least once a month. For the first episode, we run down our top 6 summer time wrestling moments. Our fandom goes back to the mid-1980s and we pull up a wide range memories.

I’d also like to invite you to come check out Stride Pro Wrestling and Cape Championship Wrestling. The next Stride show is coming up on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 144: Solo Darling

The 10th annual King of Trios tournament is coming up Sept. 1-3. It’s a huge event put on by Chikara Pro. The guest this week is one of the participants, Solo Darling. We chat about her beginnings in the business and what she thinks about stepping into the ring against guys. Big thanks to Mike Quackenbush for making this happen on such short notice.

I’m also excited to announce two other things for My 1-2-3 Cents. On the show, next week Chad and I debut a top 6 show call Six Cents. We’ll review our favorite wrestling events from summer time.

My second announcement, I’m proud to announce I am now an affiliate of the COLLARxELBOW brand. Please check out their merchandise and when you’re ready to buy something, use the code MY123CENTS. My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 143: Austin Lane

He’s the best of the best. Austin Lane has 20 years of experience under his belt and has worked in both WWE and TNA. He’s currently the number one contender for the Cape Championship Wrestling heavyweight title. Lane faces champion Hollis Giroux in the company’s first ladder match on Saturday, Aug. 26.

We discuss his early days in the business, along with his current status with CCW and what it’s like to wrestle his wife, Nikki. Be sure to check out the interview and stick around for the match of the week. It’s one that features Lane in action from last year’s CCW: Homecoming show.

Looking ahead, Stride Pro Wrestling will be back on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Illinois Star Centre Mall. Stay tuned here for more updates on that event.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 142: Dalton Anthony & Asa Gray

A few months ago I started listening to a couple of new podcasts that are part of Podzilla 1985. Pro Wrestling Unscripted, Mr. 100 & the 5 Star Man and Podzilla After Dark are the three I listen to regularly. There’s a fourth show called Nerd Up that I check out from time to time too. The show originates from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, my old stomping grounds and the hosts talk about everything from wrestling to movies to current events; things that interest me.

The Podzilla gang is very supportive of Stride Pro Wrestling and I’ve met Dalton Anthony and Asa Gray at some of our shows. When I heard their recent discussion on the new line of WWE action figures that were announced at San Diego Comic Con, I knew he was the right guy to ask questions to.

So I invited Dalton on and it made sense to do the interview in person because they were coming to the most recent Stride show. So he and I (and Asa briefly) discuss all things wrestling. We talk action figures, but also Cape Championship Wrestling (they’re part of the announce team there) as well as their shows. It’s a fun interview, check it out and support Podzilla 1985, CCW and of course Stride Pro Wrestling.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 141: Cash Borden

Stride Pro Wrestling returns this Saturday to the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion. Bell time is 6:30 p.m. (Saturday, Aug. 5). Among the matches, “Big” Roger Matheus defends the Stride Pro Wrestling championship against Cash Borden.

Cash is the guest on this week’s podcast. He shares the story of how he got started in the business and how he continued on, even after watching someone become paralyzed during a match. Cash is also a member of CollarxElbow. You can shop online and use the code “CASH”.

Besides Stride Pro Wrestling, Cash wrestles for IWA: Midsouth, IWA: Unlimited and Outlaw Wrestling. In fact, he’s going for the Gunslinger championship on September 15 against Jake Parnel and Ozzy Gallager.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 140: Ask My 1-2-3 Cents

After several weeks of solid guests on the show, I decided to let you all weigh in on this week’s show. So it’s another episode of Ask My 1-2-3 Cents. There were some great questions, including my thoughts on the Shield reuniting, who my favorite WWE Superstar is and will I ever wrestle again. I also answer a question about the current product and if I’ve ever stopped watching wrestling for a period of time.

Coming up this week in local indy wrestling, Cape Championship Wrestling’s Anniversary show is Saturday, July 29. Former WWE Superstar Billy Gunn is coming to town for that event. And a week later, it’s Stride Pro Wrestling’s Hot August Night 2 at the Illinois Star Centre Mall. That event begins at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 139: Tito Santana

Growing up, Tito Santana was always one of those guys I loved to see wrestle. He was a two-time holder of the Intercontinental Championship and a two-time co-holder of the WWF Tag Team Championships (with Ivan Putski and Rick Martel). Recently my buddy Tom Harness (Harness Digital Marketing) and I had the good fortune of interviewing Tito for the 25th Hour Radio Show. Host Rob Fairless hooked us up with the interview, which in my 1-2-3 cents turned out to be great.

Tito talks about his time in the ring, including a great story about his real-life knee injury and who he wanted to work an IC title program with and didn’t. Tom and Tito talk education too as Tom was once a teacher and Tito is a teacher now.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 138: Buff Bagwell

For nearly three decades Marcus “Buff” Bagwell has entertained wrestling fans. I remember first watching him as The Handsome Stranger in Global Wrestling Federation. Shortly after that he’d end up in WCW and his career really took off.

In 1998 after joining the nWo, I had a chance to meet Bagwell, who was wrestling as Buff Bagwell. Now, nearly 20 years later we’ve reconnected, this time for the My 1-2-3 Cents Podcast. We talk about his career and the decision to retire in 2018. Bagwell also explains why he was cautioned about using the moniker “Buff”.

Here’s the interview I did with Bagwell in Alabama back in ’98. My interview with Bobby Heenan and Ray Traylor are included too.

This week’s guest is a friend of mine from several years ago, Farmer Bill Hills. We first met when Farmer came to All American Pro Wrestling. He’s now a big part of both Stride Pro Wrestling and Cape Championship Wrestling. He has a shot at the Stride Championship Saturday, July 8 at the Illinois Star Centre Mall.

Farmer and I talk about his early days and what he’s up to now. Not only is he an indy wrestler, he’s an entrepreneur of sorts. Check out all the merchandise in his store here. You can get more than the usual tee shirts and hats. Farmer has also just joined up with the folks at Collar x Elbow so be sure to check out their stuff as well as Farmer’s new podcast, Southern Discomfort.

Jay is part of a big fan fest event for Strictly Insane Pro Wrestling. It’s set for Aug. 13 in Crossville, Illinois. Be sure to like his Facebook page or shoot him an email at Emailthemuscle@gmail.com.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 135: Money in the Bank Review

Money in the Bank 2017 is in the books and it’s the first WWE event I’ve attended since WrestleMania 32 in Dallas more than a year ago. I had the fortune of watching the show in a suite with some friends from Stride Pro Wrestling. My friend and former co-worker Weston White made the trip up from Nashville for the show too.

Weston and his father-in-law Brad join me on this week’s podcast. The three of us offer up our 1-2-3 cents on the show. While I’m not stoked that Baron Corbin has the brief, I did enjoy most of the Money in the Bank. What were your thoughts?

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 134: Stride Review & MITB Preview

Stride Pro Wrestling held its second show in the month of June, this time a fundraiser for the YouthBuild program of Jefferson and Marion Counties. More than $2,500 was raised, so thanks to all who attended. That includes Chad Smart who hosts Positive Cynicism on the Jittery Monkey Podcast Network. He’s also been a frequent guest here on My 1-2-3 Cents.

Chad is in town and attended his first Stride Pro Wrestling show. We break down the matches and talk more about indy wrestling in general. We’re also both going to Money in the Bank Sunday and share our thoughts on the matches that have been announced so far.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 132: Chris Hargas

Chris Hargas has worked hard on the indy scene for the past 15 years. He recently won the SICW heavyweight championship and is a mainstay in three other independent wrestling companies. Hargas wrestles for Stride Pro Wrestling, IWA Productions and USA Championship Wrestling.

We talk more about his training, his work in the ring and why he gets into the squared circle week in and week out. Check out his website and watch some of his matches around the country. Chris is a great performer in the ring and a heck of a guy outside of it.

You can catch Chris live in action Saturday, June 3 at the next Stride Pro Wrestling show in Marion, Illinois.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 131: Heath Hatton Returns

My friend Heath Hatton is back for another episode. This time it’s a road trip discussion as we were headed back to southern Illinois after an evening of wrestling action in the St. Louis area. Hatton was part of the Bruiser Brody Memorial Battle Royal for Southern Illinois Championship Wrestling in East Carondelet, Illinois.

Hatton also wrestled in a six-man tag team match Saturday night, picking up the win for his team. I tagged along to watch the show backstage. Also on hand for the event, WWE Hall of Famer Abdullah the Butcher and Brody’s widow Barbara Goodish.

Besides recapping the evening of wrestling, Hatton goes into great detail about the Stride Pro Wrestling school he created. There’s an open house Tuesday, May 23 at the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion. Learn more here. Hatton also talks more about the future, which is extremely bright for the company.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 130: Powerbomb TV

We all know about the WWE Network, commonly referred to on the Jittery Monkey Podcasting Network as Channel 999. Other wrestling companies are looking at that formula and offering up matches for fans to watch on demand. There’s a new venture out there called Powerbomb TV that’s bringing several indy promotions together in one central spot.

This week’s podcast is all about Powerbomb TV. The co-founder of the site, Gerard (who wrestled as Vin Gerard in Chikara Pro), goes into greater detail about how Powerbomb TV works and how fans can sign up. Right now it’s $10 a month or 100 bucks for a one-year subscription. You can sign up now for free.

There’s a big event planned on Saturday, June 11 called Break the Barrier. Gerard describes it as more of a festival than a wrestling show. Colt Cabana will be one of the many indy stars appearing on the show.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 129: ‘Cowboy’ James Storm

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Impact Wrestling star ‘Cowboy’ James Storm. He was a last-minute substitute for Tyrus at a benefit show for tornado victims put on by Stride Pro Wrestling.

Storm couldn’t have been a nice guy. Our interview was brief in large part because of getting everything ready for the show and he had a meet and greet with fans before bell time. Since I’m the ring announcer, there’s no time for me to chit chat with anyone backstage during the show. But I appreciate the time we had together for the interview. I am grateful for the opportunity.

The show saw plenty of great action, including a TLC match main event featuring Stride Pro Wrestling champion Heath Hatton and ‘Big’ Roger Matheus. You can read more about that on the My 1-2-3 Cents blog.

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the show, as well as Jerry Travelstead and Josh Plumlee who helped organize the benefit. My buddy Tom Harness, who is slowly becoming a wrestling fan, joined me and took lots of great photos and video.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 128: Dexter Roswell Interview

“Make Stride Pro Wrestling great again” has been the mantra of Dexter Roswell in recent months. The Stride graduate along with his bodyguard Brian Richards and Nathan Bragg make up the DR Party. The trio is making waves on the roster and continues to improve in the ring each time they wrestle.

Roswell and I talk more about his training and what inspired him to finally pull the trigger on a career in pro wrestling. He also explains why he feels the need to sanitize his hands before stepping through the ropes each time he wrestles. And who he hopes to one day recruit to be a member of the DR, along with a dream opponent of his.

He’ll face JD Wilk at the upcoming Brave the Storm event at Pinckneyville School 204 Saturday, May 6. This feud has been building up for some time. Roswell offered Wilk a spot in the DR Party, but Wilk made it clear he wasn’t interested.

The May 6 show is a big fundraiser for storm victims in southern Illinois. Learn more about the event here.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 127: Cape Championship Wrestling Super Show

Editor’s note: my apologies to Davey Vega and the folks at Missouri Wrestling Revival. I inadvertently called Vega Danny instead of Davey. Sorry!

It’s been an action-packed weekend. The 12th annual Cape Comic Con returned to Cape Girardeau, Missouri. There were plenty of vendors, artists and authors on hand. Costumed characters made their way around the Osage Center and several celebrity guests were there including Santiago Cirilo from the Walking Dead, voice actor Michael Nicolosi and lots of professional wrestlers.

I talked my buddy Tom Harness from Harness Digital Marketing into going or at least his alter ego iBatman. He’s the guest on today’s show. We talk more about his first experience at both Cape Con and later in the night with Cape Championship Wrestling.

Courtesy: Tom Harness

Tom watched WWF back in the day but hasn’t experienced anything quite like CCW and “Sexy” Sarge for example. The ‘King of Dong Style’ Joey Ryan was there too. Tom’s reaction was priceless. Colt Cabana, Leva Bates and Jeff Cobb were also special guests who wrestled and a WWE Hall of Famer surprised fans by making a special appearance.

It was a fun day and we’re already looking forward to the 2018 Comic Con. Be sure to support my friends in the world of professional wrestling and beyond by following them on social media. Don’t forget to check out My 1-2-3 Cents the blog and KevinHunsBlogger too.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 126: “Big” Roger Matheus

They don’t come much bigger, meaner or tougher than “Big” Roger Matheus. He has terrorized the Stride Pro Wrestling roster for about a year now. Matheus has a huge opportunity coming up on May 6 as he faces Heath Hatton for the Stride Pro Wrestling Championship in a TLC match. It’s happening at Pinckneyville Unit 204 school.

Matheus talks about his upcoming title match as well as his history in the business and what role Bobby Lashley plays in it. There’s a mention of the Boogeyman too. Thanks for listening and supporting the show and My 1-2-3 Cents the blog.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 125: Girl Fight, Super Show coming to CCW

Cape Championship Wrestling has been entertaining wrestling fans in southeast Missouri, southern Illinois and western Kentucky for nearly a year. CCW will have a big presence at this year’s Cape Con event. On Friday, April 21 it’s ladies night as CCW teams up with Madman Pondo for Girl Fight. It’s the first ever Luna Vachon Memorial Tournament.

Then on Saturday, April 22 it’s the CCW Super Show. You’ll see all the stars of CCW including champion Brandon Barbwire, tag champs Farmer Billy Hills & Dell Tucker and Austin Lane. Plus guests scheduled to appear include Colt Cabana, Joey Ryan and Jeff Cobb. The company’s COO Jason Wells explains more in today’s podcast.

Stride Pro Wrestling is working on a big show in May. It includes a TLC match for the Stride Pro Wrestling championship as Heath Hatton defends against Roger Matheus. And former WWE Superstar (Brodus Clay) Tyrus will also be on hand.

It’s a great time for indy wrestling. Come out and support the men and women of the mat. Thanks!

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 124: WrestleMania Recap

Wow. What a night of wrestling. WrestleMania 33 is in the books. Roman Reigns did what he said he was going to do and beat the Undertaker. It appears this may be it for the Deadman. Look for much more on the Undertaker’s career on the My 1-2-3 Cents blog this week.

There are also several new champions in the WWE. Naomi, Brock Lesnar, Kevin Owens, Randy Orton and The Hardy Boyz (yes you read that right) all have gold once again.

The fallout from Mania will be great to follow on Raw and SmackDown Live this week. Be sure to rate and review the podcast as well. Thanks for listening.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 123: WrestleMania Preview

Since 2006, Kevin and Chad have made the trek to WrestleMania, except WrestleManias 23, 31 and now 33. The two discuss this year’s card in depth in this week’s episode, which happens to be 123. Disclaimer: Kevin originally tried booking Sean Waltman “The 1-2-3- Kid” on the show, but came up short.

Are you excited about this year’s WrestleMania? What will be the match of the night? Should Goldberg be going in as Universal Champion? And will the Broken Hardys show up anywhere over WrestleMania week(end)?

TNA has a new name and a new look. Impact Wrestling made its official debut last Thursday night. Do you like the changes? Kevin and Chad take some time to analysis the current state of affairs.

Alberto El Patron, former WWE World Champion, is the new Impact Wrestling Champion. Bruce Prichard is back. And so is Dutch Mantell. How do you feel? Weigh in after listening to this week’s episode of My 1-2-3 Cents.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 120: ManiaCrawl

It’s WrestleMania season and that means it’s time for ManiaCrawl. The event made its debut hours before WrestleMania 29 in New Jersey. The concept is simple, wrestling fans in town for WrestleMania or SummerSlam meet at the designated bars and enjoy each others company. ManiaCrawl is also a fundraiser for Connor’s Cure.

But here’s the best part, even if you can’t be there in person, you can help the cause. Donations can be made online. If you are in Orlando for WrestleMania, I highly recommend going. We went last year in Dallas and had a blast. I’ll be back for New Orleans.

Keep an eye on the My 1-2-3 Cents blog and social media sites. I’ll have thoughts on FastLane posted there this week, along with everything else going on in the world of professional wrestling.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 119: Diamond Dallas Page

I’m excited to share this week’s podcast! It’s an interview with the latest inductee announced for the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2017 Diamond Dallas Page. I have to thank my friend Rob Fairless from the 25th Hour Radio Show for setting this one up. My buddy Tom Harness (Harness Digital Marketing) and I interviewed DDP last week, hours after the Hall of Fame announcement.

DDP talks about life in the ring as well as his DDP Yoga program and the new apps he has recently rolled out including DDP Yoga Now and the DDP’s Video Alarm. You can find both in the app store.

In addition to the DDP interview, there a few other shout-outs this week for indy wrestling. “Farmer” Billy Hills and Dell Tucker are the new Cape Championship Wrestling tag team champions. Congrats to both on being the first tag champs for the company. Also, Stride Pro Wrestling returns March 4 with a big anniversary show. Bell time is 6:30 at the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 118: Barbwire Will Break ‘Broken’ Matt Hardy

Cape Championship Wrestling is a relatively new company based in southeast Missouri. Each month special guests are brought in and are a part of the show. Past stars have included King Ricochet, Trevor Murdoch and James Ellsworth. “Broken” Matt Hardy is coming to the promotion this Saturday night, Feb. 25. He faces the CCW Champion Brandon Barbwire.

Barbwire is the guest on this week’s show. He talks more about his career and his time as CCW champ. Barbwire also discusses how he prepares for someone like Matt Hardy and the other legends of wrestling he’s faced in his 13-year career.

CCW features plenty of fine talent from the region, including Brandon Espinosa, Farmer Billy Hills and Sarah Summers. Saturday’s show will crown the company’s first tag team champions too. Bell time is 6 p.m. and there is a chance to do a meet and greet with “Broken” Matt Hardy prior to the action.

You can get more information on the show right here.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 117: He Has the Whole World (Title) in His Hands

By now you know that Bray Wyatt has won the WWE World Heavyweight Title. On the surface, this is great news. But being a sometimes wrestling pessimist, I worry about what this means for the future. Will Bray carry the gold beyond WrestleMania in a few weeks?

This week’s episode is a quick one. And full disclosure, I had to record in the car on the way to work. Sorry for the delay. As always, thanks for listening and sharing the show.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 116: Red Wants Gold

Stride Pro Wrestling has been around for nearly a year. The company was founded in Marion, Illinois and puts on monthly shows at the CMA Dojo inside the Illinois Star Centre Mall. Not only are there the monthly shows, Stride offers a training school for future wrestlers. Red Daniels is the first graduate of the program.

Red was green in those early days but has quickly developed into a great talent. His tactics aren’t always above the board, as he’s joined forces with “Hitman” Jake Capone and “Big” Roger Matheus as the Midwest Mafia. It’s proven to be a smart move, as the Daniels and Capone have earned a shot against Stride Pro Wrestling tag team champions Jay Spade and Joey O’Riley.

That championship match happens Saturday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. Several other matches have been announced, head to the Stride Pro Wrestling Facebook page or My 1-2-3 Cents for more details. (Photo for this post courtesy: Steve Belcher)

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 113: What Happened When … Kevin Wrestled

January 14, 2012 is one of those nights I’ll never forget. It was the one and only time I got to step in the ring and have a match. It was with All American Pro Wrestling, against Mike Masters. You can watch the match on YouTube here.

pac generico

Also that night PAC squared off against El Generico. You know them better today as Neville and Sami Zayn. You can see their match (which I also helped call) here.

So this week’s podcast is an homage to my favorite show Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard. Nerds United and Five Heart Podcast host (and Jittery Monkey Network creator) Greg Mehockho plays the role of Conrad Thompson and asks “what happened when Kevin wrestled?”

Big thanks to Greg for the idea and the questions. I had hoped to have Mike Masters on for his perspective, but our schedules did not allow. Sometime this year we’ll make it happen.

It’s a new year and UFC Hall of Famer Dan “The Beast” Severn is staying busy. The former NWA World Heavyweight Champion is still very active, teaching children and adults the art of amateur wrestling and self-defense.

I recently had the honor of speaking with The Beast. He is a gracious and humble man who shares his insight with all of us. Thanks to Rob Fairless from The 25th Hour Radio Show for helping me set up this interview.

You can keep up with Severn on his official website and check out his book The Realest Guy in the Room. Jim Cornette wrote the forward for it, and we talk about the relationship between Severn and Corny. We also discuss Ken Shamrock and Brock Lesnar among other topics.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 109: Dalton’s New World Order

I recently met a young wrestling fan named Dalton with a rare disease called ADL. His dying wish was to attend WrestleMania 33, but unfortunately, he passed away before that could happen. You can read more about Dalton here.

If you want to help I would suggest donating to the family’s GoFundMe page, it would be more than appreciated. Email me kevinhunsperger@gmail.com or contact the Granted office at (812) 425-9474 if you have any other questions.

Merry Christmas. Chad and I will have the Centy Awards next week for you.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 108: Road Block, Linda McMahon & Crossover Appeal

Chad and Kevin are back for an all-new episode of My 1-2-3 Cents. The two are discussing three hot topics in wrestling this week. The upcoming Road Block: End of the Line event, Linda McMahon’s role in the Trump administration and the crossover appeal of WWE Superstars like John Cena, the Rock and Batista.

During the discussion, we try to name who the next big crossover Superstar will be. Who do you think will go from the ring to Hollywood next and have the most success in doing so?

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 106: It Strikes Your Fancy

Professional wrestling fans in southern Illinois already know who J. Wellington Beauregard is. He’s been a part of the wrestling scene in this region for more than a decade. Now as a part of Stride Pro Wrestling, Beauregard has managed some of the biggest and best brawlers in the game. His stable “Damage Inc.” includes former champion Ax Allwardt, “Homicidal” Stephen Davis, Brandon Walker and up-and-comer Scott Phoenix.

Two of Beauregard’s men have big title opportunities on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the CMA Dojo at the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion, Illinois. Ax will get a rematch against new Stride Pro Wrestling Champion Heath Hatton. But the match is a fatal four-way and includes “Big” Roger Matheus and Chris Hargas. Also happening at Hostile Holiday: Seasons Beatings event, Phoenix gets a shot at the Legacy Championship held by Jerry Travelstead.

Come out for a fun night of wrestling action. It’s got a Star Wars theme and we’ll be having a good time with that too. Bell time is 6:30 p.m. See you there.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 105: Let’s Give Thanks

It’s the week of Thanksgiving so after a few failed attempts at getting a guest booked for this week’s show I decided to go with a “What I’m thankful for” podcast. The show is short and sweet, not because I’m not thankful for many things, though.

As I sit here and reflect on what I said on the show I am reminded that I didn’t thank the guy behind Jittery Monkey Podcasting, Greg Mehochko. About two years ago he invited me to join the network and I’m grateful for that. So Greg if you’re reading this, thank you very much. I appreciate being a part of Jittery Monkey.

I’m thankful for all of you for listening and sharing for nearly two years now. There have been some great guests along the way. I’m happy to have this outlet and I’m grateful for each of you. Your support has been awesome here and on My 1-2-3 Cents the blog.

It’s going to be a battle of the big men coming up on Friday, November 25 (the night after Thanksgiving). The 1 Ton Tournament is happening in Tullahoma, Tennessee. This one-night tournament is the brainchild of Jeremiah Plunkett.

The competitors must weigh at least 300 pounds to be entered. Listeners to this show know combatants like “Farmer” Billy Hills and Bull Bronson. You can learn more about the show here.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 103: Hatton’s Last Chance

Stride Pro Wrestling returns to action Saturday, November 12 at West Frankfort High School. It’s the Redbird Rumble. Several great matches have already been announced including the Stride Pro Wrestling heavyweight title. Heath Hatton gets a last chance opportunity for the gold against Ax Allwardt in a Street Fight. The tag team titles will be defended in a Fatal Four-Way match and “Big” Roger Matheus battles Chris Hargis in a grudge match.

In this week’s show Heath talks about his upcoming match and goes over some of the big events from his career, including an NWA title shot against Adam Pearce and his WWE PPV debut against Ryback in 2012.

Speaking of the upcoming Stride Pro Wrestling show, there’s a new Legacy Champion. Jerry Travelstead beat Tony Flood in a ladder match to win the brand new title. The two put on an amazing match, both coming out worse for the wear as a result.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 102: The Prince of All Goblins

Happy Halloween. I’ve been looking forward to the Halloween show for some time now and I’m happy to have had the chance to talk once again with Kobald, the Prince of All Goblins. He’s one of the stars of Chikara Pro and a member of the Batiri. If you’ve never watched, get caught up with the product via Chikaratopia.

Besides catching up with Kobald in this episode I offer up a quick review of Halloween Havoc ’91. If you’ve never watched, you’re missing out. The Chamber of Horrors match between Sting, El Gigante and The Steiners going against Big Van Vader, Cactus Jack, Abdullah the Butcher and the Diamond Studd. It’s good, campy fun to say the least.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 101: Hell Hath No Fury…

The Raw brand is back in pay per view form with the annual Hell in a Cell event. It’s set for Sunday and features an unprecedented three HIAC matches. Kevin Owens defends the WWE Universal championship against Seth Rollins, Rusev attempts to regain the U.S. championship from Roman Reigns and Sasha Banks clashes with Charlotte for the Raw Women’s title. That match is the first time the ladies have wrestled in a cell.

Chad and I break down the event as it stands so far. Who should main event? Are three cell matches necessary? Will Sheamus and Cesaro end the New Day’s 400+ tag team title reign?

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 100: Bushwhacked!

First, thank you all for checking out this podcast. This is episode 100 and I wouldn’t be where I am today with the show without your support. I truly appreciate the fact that people are listening and sharing this podcast with their friends. I am focused on finding more quality guest to have on each week as the show moves forward.

For the 100th episode, I was able to book Bushwhacker Luke as my guest. Big thanks to Jerry Travelstead for helping make this happen. Jerry is a school superintendent in Pinckneyville, Illinois. On Saturday, Nov. 5 Bushwhacker Luke will be wrestling at a fundraiser show for the district.

Luke talks about his career before, during and after WWE. He also provides an update on his longtime tag team partner Butch Miller. If you live in the area, come on our November 5 and meet Luke. There will be opportunities for photos and autographs too. I’ll be there along with local favorites like Heath Hatton, Ax Allwardt, Farmer Billy Hills and Tony Flood among others.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 98: Go Figure

When I was in 6th grade WWF and LJN released the first series of wrestling action figures (although everyone I knew called them dolls) in 1985. I instantly became obsessed and collected Hulk Hogan, “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka, Andre the Giant, Big John Studd and the Iron Sheik in quick fashion.

Years later, although much too old to play with the figures, I collected the Hasbro and Jakks Pacific brands. Then my son started collecting wrestling figures (he has since stopped though).

But I’ve always been fascinated with the talented people who can make the custom figures. J. Ryan Abney in southeast Missouri is one such artist. You can see his work on his Spooky Customs page. He has an eBay store too, featuring custom figures of the Superstars and Legends you know as well as indy greats. Contact him if you’d like to have your own creation made.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 97: Taking Things in Stride

I’ve talked many times before about Stride Pro Wrestling. The independent wrestling company continues to grow in southern Illinois. The next big show is set for Saturday, Oct. 1. Fall Break is being held at the Illinois Star Centre mall in Marion at the CMA Dojo. Bell time is 6:30.

Heath Hatton is the new number one contender for Ax Allwardt’s Stride Pro Wrestling championship. He gets his title match November 12 in West Frankfort, Illinois. We talk more about that show as well as the rivalry with Ax that has been one of southern Illinois’ most intense.

Hatton also trains the newest crop of indy wrestlers in southern Illinois at the Stride Pro Wrestling school. Check out Facebook for more on the program. And don’t forget to read the My 1-2-3 Cents blog.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 96: The Space Monkey Has Landed

For nearly two years, there have been some interesting guests on My 1-2-3 Cents the Podcast. But the Space Monkey may be the most unique. He and I have a “conversation” about his career in the squared circle.

Space Monkey has been wrestling for about two years and has worked for companies along the East coast and into Canada. I first noticed him on social media (@PWSpaceMonkey) a few weeks ago after he competed in Chikara Pro.

This week’s show also features some news and notes from around the world of professional wrestling. I share my take on the rumors WWE is interested in buying TNA. Read more on the My 1-2-3 Cents blog.

Don’t forget to rate and review the show on iTunes or Jittery Monkey, screenshot it and tag us on social media. Be honest. You’ll be entered into a contest to win a prize whether you give the show one star or five stars. I want to make this a better show for all of us.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 95: “Leaping” Lanny Poffo is a Genius

This week’s episode is a conversation with “Leaping” Lanny Poffo, who eventually became the Genius in the WWF. I did this interview for a friend of mine Rob Fairless and his radio broadcast, The 25th Hour Radio Show. Rob was unable to do the interview, so I filled in for him.

As you’ll hear in the intro, I try to talk more to Lanny about his career and not focus so much on “Macho Man” Randy Savage like many other interviewers do. I feel like Lanny often gets lost in the shuffle, but has a very interesting career too. He shares stories of wrestling in a suit of armor, how the poetry gimmick started and what it was like working for the family’s wrestling company in the late 1970s.

Also on the show I share some thoughts on CM Punk and his UFC debut. Look for blog posts this week on Backlash and other wrestling happenings; and don’t forget to tune in Thursday at noon CST for Lucha Lunch Live on the My 1-2-3 Cents Facebook page.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 93: Hey, Hey It’s Conrad

Conrad Thompson
Conrad Thompson

This week the co-host of both The Ric Flair Show and Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard, Conrad Thompson, joins the podcast. Both shows are on MLW Radio.

The Ric Flair Show has weekly guests ranging from Cody Rhodes to Kurt Angle to Ken Patera and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard is a weekly stroll down memory lane as Prichard recalls certain storylines during his time in WWE. I love the format of this show in particular.

On My 1-2-3 Cents the Podcast we discuss both shows and how Conrad went from wrestling fan to hanging out with the greatest of all time. We also talk about current events in wrestling and our thoughts on the state of WWE.

I’m also starting a new contest. Go to iTunes, subscribe and leave a rating and a review. Screenshot it and tag me on social media with it. The My 1-2-3 Cents prize vault is full and we need to get things out you!

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 92: SummerSlam Review

AJ Styles John Cena

SummerSlam 2016 is in the books and probably the best pay per view so far of the year. From the crowning of the new WWE Universal Champion (Finn Balor) to the phenomenal matchup between John Cena and AJ Styles to Charolette regaining the WWE Women’s Championship this event delivered.

Chad and I give some thoughts on the evening, but also look ahead to what’s next for the Superstars involved in the biggest party of the summer.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 91: Cheers to ManiaCrawl

ManiaCrawl2
A toast to ManiaCrawl

A few years ago a couple of wrestling fans came up with a way to unit fans before two of the WWE’s biggest events of the year, WrestleMania and SummerSlam. ManiaCrawl is held the afternoon of those events now at a bar in the host city. Hundreds of fans participate and help raise money for Connor’s Cure.

Prior to SummerSlam, KBH Bierhall in Brooklyn is hosting ManiaCrawl. Bill Apter will be there too, signing copies of his new book. Admission is free, but donations will be collected at the event. To date, ManiaCrawl has raised about $2,700.

Chad and I stopped by ManiaCrawl in Dallas earlier this year. I got in a quick episode of Craftbeericans while I was there.

You can find ManiaCrawl on social media, be sure to follow and like their pages. You can buy t-shirts and make donations to Connor’s Cure if you aren’t able to make it to the bar.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 90: Top Rope IPA Review

TOP ROPE IPA

Many of you know not only do I like pro wrestling, but I’m learning the ropes about craft beer. My buddies and I have a YouTube channel called Craftbeericans where we review various brews. This week, my worlds collide with a review of Top Rope IPA by Tallgrass Brewing Company in Manhattan, Kansas.

But please stay tuned to the Craftbeericans channel for a WWF Superstars review of Top Rope IPA. It’ll be up later this week and funny (I hope).

Also in this week’s show a look at what’s making news in the world of professional wrestling, including a look at some of my favorite local independent wrestling companies, including Stride Pro Wrestling, Warrior’s Code Wrestling and Cape Championship Wrestling. Please visit these companies and help make indy wrestling thrive here in southern Illinois and southeast Missouri.

As always thanks for the support. Check out the blogs on the My 1-2-3 Cents website. Also follow @my123cents on Twitter & Instagram and @kevinhunsperger on Twitter and @kevin_hunsperger on Instagram.
