Nerds United Episode 134: Indiana Jones, Deadpool, and Crossovers[ 1:11:58 | 0.01 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (481)
It’s been a couple weeks but the CO-HOST OF THE YEAR is back! Mike makes his triumphant return to the show AND my kitchen table for a great conversation about Indiana Jones, Deadpool, the unlikelihood of a Marvel/DC crossover, King Kong and Godzilla, and The Matrix.
There’s beer. There’s laughs. It’s always a good time, at least for us. And if you enjoy what we’re doing here, throw us a rate and review on your favorite podcast app. That’s free. If you LOVE what we do here, buy some merch at the Jittery Monkey Shop.
Jon Damn Johnston took the night off, apparently. We don’t know what happened to him. There was radio silence from Minnesota until we were almost done recording. But here’s what we have in store for you:
Husker Baseball comes up short in the Big Ten Championship. No more Oklahoma Drill in the NFL, and why Hoss doesn’t like that drill in the first place. Tanner Farmer signs with Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL. Husker Football and whooping that Coloradowa (Colorado/Iowa) ass.

Nerds United Episode 133: Kicking Off a Broderick Kickstarter[ 45:29 | 62.46 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (459)
Hello again and welcome to a brand new episode if Nerds United. In this episode, Greg is talking to two past guests, Ron Bryce and Jay Peteranetz, creators of Broderick, a 4-issue comic book.
Broderick Issue #2 is now available for your support on Kickstarter.
http://kck.st/2WgR1kd
Issue #2 will feature a Kickstarter exclusive variant cover by Marvel/DC artist Tom Lyle. You have until June 27 to support this book. And really, there’s no reason not to. Indy comics, like indy music, movies, and even wrestling, are an art form, and you’re helping new content to be made.
So get out your wallet and pledge a buck…or twenty.
Everyone was podcast listening. The latest edition of Wonder Why goes back in time to the early 1970s to a time when dance clubs were popular and martial arts were experiencing a rise in popularity. Combining these two elements, Jamaican singer/songwriter Carl Douglas created a chart topping smash with the song “Kung Fu Fighting.”
Hosts @chadsmart and @MikeDeKalb debate whether “Kung Fu Fighting” is a novelty hit or if future singles by Carl Douglas were hampered by the perception of a gimmicky singer. Whatever side of the debate your on, one thing can’t be disputed, if you’re making a movie with a fight scene, “Kung Fu Fighting” must be included at some point.
In an effort to freshen up the content, this week’s episode is simply called Wildcard. My hope is that it’s more entertaining than WWE’s Wildcard concept. Chad and I tackle several issues all sent in from listeners of the show. So for that, I say thanks!

This week’s show features news that we were not aware of regarding Ndamukong Suh’s previous contract. Oh, and the big man is moving back to Florida for another year of football. And he’ll be joining former Husker Lavonte David in Tampa Bay.
There are a couple of Nebraska natives who are putting in the effort in the weight room. Meanwhile, Bill Moos isn’t opposed to the idea of alcohol sales in Memorial Stadium…at least parts of Memorial Stadium.

*There is some static in portions of the audio. Hope it’s not too distracting.*
Before recording this episode which focuses on politics, host @chadsmart came to the realization that due to the political climate, he didn’t want to talk politics. What’s the point? Our political discourse is so fractured that the idea of having a discussion that will have any impact on how people think is an exercise in frustration.
While there may have been some discontent with the topic at hand, the conversation with Positive Cynicism Political Expert Brandon Cooley was civil and had some valid points. After the discussion, the future of the political episodes of Positive Cynicism was addressed. What does the future hold? Listen and find out.
Don’t be too worried about the title. I am ranting, but it’s not a full 20 minutes. Basically, I’m fed up with the ‘fake news’ out there concerning wrestling. I share my views on that and more in this week’s episode.

Nerds United Episode 132: Batman, Rescue Rangers, Theater Etiquette[ 1:26:22 | 0.01 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (577)
We’re back! After taking a week off after dropping two award-winning podcasts in one night two weeks ago, we’re here to talk about the recent news of Robert Pattinson being cast as Batman. But that’s not all.
Did you know there’s a Chip n Dale’s Rescue Rangers live action movie being made? And where does Gargoyles rank in Greg’s hierarchy of cartoons?
Popeye makes an appearance, and we talk about movie theater etiquette and what we prefer in our theater experiences.
So that’s the show. Please support us by throwing up a rate and review on the podcast app of your choice. And if you’re feeling really generous, buy a shirt at our SHOP. Buy this weekend and save 15% on everything!
Here’s a quick rundown of the topics on this week’s show. We kick it off with a little acknowledged anger management as Hooch admits that he screwed up Mother’s Day. We talk about The Wizard of Oz, and how Jon is the All-Powerful Oz and how the Wicked Witch was equally stupid. And it must be stated that Hoss’ first gray hair was found…and swiftly dealt with.
Then after the break, memorable Husker moments that you would always see through to the end as well as your “gateway game,” the introduction to Husker football that you would share with someone who has no clue what Husker football is about.
Also, per our agreement with the Powers That Be, I’m legally obligated to share this image with you. You’ll know why when you listen to the show.

After ten years, Marvel has completed the most ambitious story in cinematic history. Over the course of 22 movies, Marvel has taken some lesser known superheroes and crafted a roughly 50 hour story using six different main characters.
Marvel isn’t the only franchise breaking the traditional celluloid story telling method. Warner Bros. and DC have tried to copy Marvel’s game plan with the Justice League universe. Horror film, The Conjuring has its own interwoven stories and then there’s Kevin Smith’s Viewaskewiverse.
On this edition of Positive Cynicism, @chadsmart and Eric Bennett discuss the different cinematic universes regarding what works, what doesn’t and what they’d like to see in future film franchises.
This week I’m honoring all (or many) of the moms out there who are associated in one way or another with pro wrestling. I know, Mother’s Day was yesterday, but it’s never too late to show how much we care about mom, right?

Inspired by the awesome YouTube series, “Cobra Kai,” this episode of Positive Cynicism was originally set to discuss recent film and televisions reboots and revivals. Unscripted conversations though have a way of taking on a life of their own.
While @chadsmart and @TheTravisYates start off talking what shows they’d like to see brought into the modern day, the conversation moves to a discussion about shared experiences related to media.
Last year I introduced listeners to my friend, Lane Austin. At that time he was Stride Pro Wrestling’s senior official. Many times, he was the only referee on hand.
But Lane has had some health issues and that ended in a double organ transplant. For the first time since the surgery, Lane and I sat down and talked about how he’s doing, his love for wrestling and why he enjoys being a ref. Check it out!

Do NOT blame us if you feel cheated if you didn’t follow these basic rules. We are not responsible for ruining this movie and the last eleven years of Marvel goodness if you fail to watch the movie before listening to this episode.

With the recent success of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Rocketman” soon to hit theaters, @chadsmart and @MikeDeKalb take a break from overanalyzing one hit wonders to warm up their singing voices and break down the musical biopic genre.
From “The Buddy Holly Story,” “La Bamba” and “Amadeus” to “Selena,” “8 Mile” and “The Dirt,” Chad and Mike delve into the world of musical cinema to discuss what makes a good biopic, what tropes are overused and what musical artists’ story would make a great film.
The 2019 Cape Comic Con is in the books. This year the Jittery Monkey Podcasting Network took the event by storm. We set up a table and meet lots of potential new listeners. We also gave away some swag.
After the con, we headed over to Cape Championship Wrestling. This week on the podcast, Chad and I summarize the experience and talk about indy wrestling, Joey Ryan’s penis and WWE haters.
We talked fandom and how to tie the movies into pro wrestling. You can learn more at the Stride website here.

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, your favorite Corn Nation podcast that includes both a number and a vital organ, Greg, Hoss, and Jon talk about an ass-kicking Easter bunny, which is different than an Easter bunny getting its ass kicked.
We also talk about some of the recent rules changes made to our beloved college football, like blind-side blocks and targeting, as well as overtime adjustments. And Greg gives his opinion as to what would make overtime really exciting.
There’s also talk about the latest on the players who are leaving the Husker football team, without the knowledge of Quayshon Alexander.

This week, there’s no Mike. So it’s automatically 1/2 as awesome as usual. But I’m here with a shorter episode to get you ready for Cape Comic Con this coming weekend.
That’s not all the excitement headed your was the weekend of April 26. We also get Avengers Endgame! And I will be taking it in Friday night with my wife. I’m really excited, as I’m sure most of the world is. But if you know someone on your Facebook friends list who doesn’t get our love of these movie franchises, maybe they post things like “I don’t get what all of the hype is over these comic book movies” or something similar, just un-friend them. As the old saying goes, you don’t need that type of negativity in your life.
Positive Cynicism EP. 89: Talk About the Report .... Mueller .... Mueller.[ 55:48 | 76.64 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (559)
Like an episode of Game of Thrones, a month in the world of politics offers a lot of ground to cover. On this episode of Positive Cynicism, @chadsmart and Brandon Cooley try to break down most of the major moments of the last month. Starting with the eagerly anticipated Mueller Report, Chad and Brandon discuss what the report says or doesn’t say and if the report will change anyone’s opinions on Donald Trump and Russian involvement in the 2016 Election.
After the Mueller report, the big news is former Vice President Joe Biden’s pending announcement he’s joining the crowed Democratic field for the 2020 nomination. Will Joe’s literal being in touch with potential voters be a detriment to obtaining the nomination? Will Mayor Pete Buttigieg be the spoiler in the Democratic race? So many issues to cover, so little time.

Keith Yaple covers Nebraska Baseball for Corn Nation, and since this is Keith’s debut on the Five Heart Podcast, we get to play a little “Get to Know You.”
The Husker Baseball team was in action while we were recording the episode, so we get some live in-game reaction and analysis from Keith. Keith provides some insight on the Huskers’ season to this point, up to and including the game Wednesday night against the UNO Mavericks.
Also – Keith…kind of a gambler. He won a handsome sum of money betting on women’s college basketball.
At the end of the show, we talk a little bit about the Husker Spring Game. So make sure you stay tuned for that!

As the 2019 NHL playoffs heat up, this special episode of Positive Cynicism covers all 31 teams of the National Hockey League. From October 2013 to March 2019, @chadsmart and @MikeDeKalb traveled the United States and Canada in order to see a game in every NHL arena.
After completing their journey in Boston, Mike solicited questions from friends regarding their curiosity about the trips. Now in an extended Positive Cynicism, Mike and Chad try to cover all their favorite aspects of their travels as well as giving props to their favorite arenas and cities.
Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart is one of the most iconic pro wrestlers in the history of the business. He was recently immortalized again in the WWE Hall of Fame with his partner Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart.

Holy crap! Greg made it to the movies! So this episode, we talk about Shazam! And Disney+ released its “go-live” date as well as the price points.
We talk about what Disney+ is offering, as well as what that announcement means for Netflix.
The other topics discussed are the updated Lion King movie, Lady and the Tramp, and a little movie franchise called Star Wars.
Thanks to Mike for getting all the celebrity shout-outs handled on social media. Mike’s the best! (not actually written by Mike…for clarification – GM)
It’s an exciting week to be a Husker fan – but also depressing. This Saturday is the Spring Game, a great day for fans to fill up Memorial Stadium. But it’s also the final nail in the coffin of anything football related until Fall practices begin. And WE DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO!
So in this brand new episode, we talk about the Red and White Team rosters and what Hoss hopes to see on Saturday.
We also discuss the latest news regarding RB Mo Washington and the rumors of Doc Sadler coming back to Nebraska as an assistant basketball coach.
While we’re excited to have an embedded player, we still would like you to subscribe to the show on one of these apps.
Last month @chadsmart and Eric Bennett discussed some of their favorite films they feel are underappreciated. This month, they do a 180 degree flip and go for movies they feel are overrated. What constitutes the criteria for a film to be overrated? Are there beloved classics Chad and Eric don’t feel are worthy of the praise? Do they think Oscar winning films are unnecessarily beloved? Listen to their discussion to find out what movies they list and let them know if you agree or disagree.
Warning, if you are a cinefile (or were in college in the late ’90s early 2000’s), you will most likely be upset with our discussion.

And don’t forget that we (Greg, Kevin from My 1-2-3 Cents, and Chad from Positive Cynicism…and hopefully Mike?) will be at Cape Comic Con this month, April 26-28. We’ll be there on the Saturday with a table and doing some podcast recording, so be sure to stop and say hi.

On this edition of Wonder Why, @chadsmart and @MikeDeKalb travel back to 2006. Once there the question changes from why did Saving Jane only have one hit to how to did Saving Jane manage to crack a chart dominated by hip-hop, R&B and without the aid of anyone guesting on their track.
Saving Jane hailed from Columbus, Ohio and hit the charts with their song “Girl Next Door.” A song that a few years later, some say was redone by one of the most popular artists of the 2000s. Is it plagiarism or simply a case of an age old story told through song?
After breaking down the career of Saving Jane, it’s time for the picks of the month. Mike goes with a band he recently saw in concert while Chad pulls inspiration from Saving Jane to make his pick.

Hey everyone – we’re back with a brand new episode of Nerds United. This episode starts with some news and notes but the episode is really centered around one of Mike’s more brilliant ideas – counting down our top five scenes from comic book movies.
What scenes from which movies made the cut? Do you agree or disagree with the scenes we selected? We want to know, so leave a comment on the Facebook page.
And rate/review the show on your favorite podcast app, show it to us, and you’re likely to receive something in the mail from the show. We don’t know what it is yet – but we have stuff to give away.
1-844-278-8555 – that’s the number to call Friday from 5am to 11pm to make a donation to the American Red Cross to help Nebraska residents affected by the storms last week.
Tim Miles and the Huskers are still playing basketball and it’s the end of March. That’s good news, right? The Huskers are up next against TCU Sunday night at 8:30pm (Central).
The Husker Hockey team boasts some All-Pacific Region players after this year.
And there’s some football talk after the break, the emergence of JoJo Domann, who you’d build your Husker team around, and the brief love affair Husker fans had with UCF and how UCF fans turned out to be bitches (paraphrasing).

Another busy month in the political spectrum. More Democrats enter the race for 2020. A former “controversial” CNN Democrat joins Fox News. Colorado’s Governor wants to change who gets the state’s electoral votes and in a shocking turn of events, some college students didn’t get into college based solely on their merits. Brandon Cooley joins @chadsmart to discuss these topics and offer up thoughts on the current political landscape.

Woo buddy, the Husker men’s basketball team has won three in a row, knocking off some good competition, and are continuing their trek through the Big Ten Tournament. It’s an exciting time for the fans.
The Husker Men’s Hockey Club was victorious at the regional championship last weekend, punching its ticket to the national championship tournament in Frisco, TX later this month.
As for Husker football, we discuss the expected departure of Mo Washington, as he turned himself in to California officials due to the legal situation involving him and an inappropriate video. Which prompts us all to remind you all to MAKE GOOD DECISIONS! And we talk about the ceiling for Adrian Martinez: where he could take this team and where this team could eventually take him.
Plus Bob Diaco, Nebraska weather, and phone emojis.
It’s all in this exciting and somewhat organized episode of THE FIVE HEART PODCAST!

With Oscar season behind us, @chadsmart and Eric Bennett turn their attention to movies they feel fly under the radar. Picking five movies each from their libraries, they discuss films that have had an impact on their lives but feel few people have seen.

After listening to the show, share your own underappreciated movies on twitter with @chadsmart. Then head over to the Jittery Monkey Shop and pick up a Positive Cynicism shirt.
It’s a new episode of My 1-2-3 Cents the podcast. This week the new Stride Pro Wrestling Champion Red Daniels joins me as co-host. Since he just returned to the ring after being buried alive in Dec. 2017, I thought it only made sense to share our favorite wrestling returns.
We each share our six favorites (spoiler: mine are mostly old school based). Red also discusses his thoughts on character development and what he’s learned in his three years in the business.

Did it live up to the hype? Were there twists and turns? Are the guys going to drop a quinjet worth of spoilers? FIND OUT in the brand new episode, recorded before and after the show.
That’s right – it’s a truck, er, I mean a Jeep episode! We talk about the movie in non-spoiler ways, what we liked about it, what we didn’t, and it we felt it was a little too obvious in some places (it was). And then Greg remembers he needs a gallon of milk.
So that’s our show. Remember to rate and review our show on your favorite podcast app, take a screenshot of it, and share it with us. It may just be worth your while. Seriously.
This week on the Five Heart Podcast (now officially a member of the SB Nation Podcast Network), Hoss Reuter is BACK! And back with a vengeance. There’s talk of key match-ups and right timing, like getting Ohio State in September instead of November, while hosting Wisconsin towards the end of the season.
We drink Coors Banquet, the chosen beer of Hoss Reuter, and Greg makes plans to go to Champaign in the Fall for another Nebraska/Illinois game.
We talk about Spring Ball and emerging leaders in the locker room. We talk about Tim Miles’ questionable future and why fans are still hesitant to get rid of him.
But mostly, the three legs of the tripod are back and we’re ready to move forward! It’s a red and white freight train, after all!

As a fan of 1980s cinema, March 10, 2009 was a dark day. That was the day former teen star Corey Haim died. For this edition of Positive Cynicism, @chadsmart and Travis (@PopCultIQ) Yates pay tribute to one of their favorites actors.
From his early roles in Firstborn and Lucas to the classic three films with Corey Feldman, Chad and Travis discuss the talented teen actor who appeared to have a bright future ahead of him.
Unfortunately, Haim didn’t make the jump from child actor to adult without succumbing to the demons that have haunted child actors for decades. Substance abuse and poor choice of projects hampered Corey Haim’s career in the ’90s. Corey kept acting in various films but couldn’t reclaim the success of his early days.
Wow, what a show! Strideiversary (the 3 year anniversary show for Stride Pro Wrestling) is in the books and proved to be the best show the company has put on. That’s not Tony Schiavone hype, it’s the truth. I’m happy to have been a small part of the evening. You can hear a recap of all the action on this week’s show.
I also have a clip from the Honky Tonk Man as part of this week’s episode. He of course is going to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame soon. I interviewed HTM back in 2016. You can find the whole episode here.
Also over on the My 1-2-3 Cents YouTube channel, I’ve started a new feature called Go Figure Friday. Be sure to check it out and subscribe to the channel.
Finally!!!! Greg let me write this part of the thing…look…does anyone really read this thing? I mean, come on, we spend hours and hours thinking of stuff to write here and for what? OK, you caught me. That is a lie. Greg usually puts some type of thought into it. Me? I just like to ramble until I remember what we just talked about on the podcast. This ole noggin aint what it used to be. Captain Marvel, we talk about that. I bet you probably knew that though from the title. What else do we talk about? Venom…yes…I am starting to remember now. It is all coming back to me. Greg finally sat down and watched Venom. Spoiler alert: he liked it but said that Topher Grace is the real Venom….ok not true, but I forgot to make that joke during the podcast so I had to do it here. We also talk about the Xmen Dark Phoenix trailer and Hellboy Reboot trailer. Geez louise, we talk a lot. Actually not as much as some episodes cause it is Sunday. Friday Greg was a bit tuckered out and….wait, why am I telling this story, just listen to the podcast. Then tell all of your friends to listen, and tell their friends…and so on and so forth. Like, subscribe, rate, review, high five us when or if you ever see us in public. I’ll even take a selfie with you……Just saying. Bye!
This week on the show, Greg and JDJ are thrilled to be joined by a special guest, Nebraska Men’s Hockey Club Assistant Coach Reed Fuller.
Using the power of www.huskerhockey.com, Greg and Jon chat with Reed about the Husker Hockey Club, the program’s history and league affiliation, the players on the team, their sweet sweaters (probably the best Husker “jerseys” you can’t buy), the 2018-19 season and the upcoming post-season.
The men’s hockey club is back-to-back MACHA conference champions, plays its home games at Breslow Ice Hockey Center, and does it all pretty much out of pocket by the players.
Reed was great, and even agreed to join us (in spirit) next week for a Coors Banquet as we celebrate the return of Hoss Reuter.

Time to jump back into the time machine and examine another One Hit Wonder* from the ’80s. This month @chadsmart and @MikeDeKalb break down the career of English band Scritti Politti. Hitting the U.S. charts in late 1985 with The Perfect Way, Scritti Politti were poised to follow up their British success. Or so it seemed. Unfortunately, future songs wouldn’t fare as well.
Mike gives all the details on the band’s formation and post The Perfect Way career while Chad adds very little to the conversation. After the discussion of Scritti Politti, it’s time for the Picks of the Month. Chad chooses the return album of an early 2000’s pop star while Mike goes with one of the 1990s/2000s alternative heavyweights.

It’s been an interesting start to 2019 since AEW officially announced ‘Double or Nothing.’ The speculation on the future of WWE has run rampant. This week on the show Tyler ‘Heath’ Hatton and I break it all down. Hatton has an extensive history in indy wrestling and has worked for WWE too, performing at Extreme Rules in 2012 and doing some other dark matches. He’s also the owner of Stride Pro Wrestling.
Stride returns on March 2 with Strideiversary: the 3 year anniversary of the company. Check out the website for all the details. Sam and I discuss the matches coming that night.

Nerds United Episode 123: Beer, Wrestling, Superheroes[ 1:19:02 | 108.54 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (476)
Did you see the news this week from Hollywood?
So it got me thinking – what other super hero movie actors could or should be cast in some professional wrestling biopics. So that’s really the premise of the show.
We enjoy beers from Germany and make inappropriate jokes. The show goes off the rails and Greg’s son says goodnight.
Five Heart Podcast Episode 113: Men's Hoops with Kade Dohmen[ 55:09 | 0.01 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (642)
This week on the Five Heart Podcast, we sit down with the newest contributor to join the ranks at Corn Nation, Kade Dohmen. Kade is a UNL student set to graduate later this Spring and brings another youthful perspective to our site.
So we take a little bit of time to get to know Kade and then we talk about the Husker men’s basketball team and the comments made this week by Tim Miles. And what does Kade think can happen (best-case scenario) for the Huskers in the final weeks?

It’s been a whirlwind month since the last Political edition of Positive Cynicism. Since then, we’ve had more politicians declare their candidacy for President, a group of high school students accused of racism on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, a TV star who may or may not have been attacked in a racist/homophobic hate crime, a New Green Deal that was mocked by all sides and a national emergency declared.
In this episode @chadsmart and Brandon Cooley break down all the events of the past month and try to understand what’s going on in this crazy world. A discussion of what to expect as we prepare for even more Democratic candidates to enter the race.
Since there’s a lot of talk in tag team wrestling this week with the crowning of WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions for the first time in decades, I decided to make tag teams the topic of this week’s My 1-2-3 Cents. My guest co-host is Garrett Turner, aka Dexter Roswell of Stride Pro Wrestling. He’s a co-holder of the tag team championship right now.
Stride returns on March 2 with Strideiversary: the 3 year anniversary of the company. Check out the website for all the details. Sam and I discuss the matches coming that night.

It’s Stout Month at 4204 Main Street Brewing Company in our adoptive town of Belleville so we start our episode (and our live video) with some stout brews.
This episode, we talk about a giveaway, a fund raiser (they are mutually exclusive of one another), losing loved ones to heart attacks, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Superman: Red Son, some X-Men, and the DC and Disney streaming apps.
We are just two guys who like beer and BOY HOWDY did we enjoy some today. We also took our first ever on-air caller and we had plenty of laughs.

It’s Thursday night with the boys as Greg, Jon Damn Johnston, and Rick Cone discuss the latest issues of the week.
There’s been a lot happening around the Nebraska football program this week, and these topics deserve our attention.
But we also celebrate a Nebrasketball victory – their first in seven games.
And Rick is here to talk about recruiting – and that’s a positive. Rick’s sexy bald brain, plus a lot of people outside of Nebraska’s circle of sunshine pumpers, find that this recruiting class is pretty outstanding.

Part of the appeal of pop culture is ability to suspend disbelief and escape reality. In this episode of Positive Cynicism, @chadsmart and Eric Bennett discuss falling in love with film due to the escapist nature of the blockbuster film vs. the realism of adult aimed films (no, not those adult films).
As the 2019 Oscars get closer, Chad tried to watch nominated movies and realized he was bored by the serious nature of the majority of the films. This realization opened up the pathway to explore other topics regarding the nature of present day films.
Love is in the air. After all, Valentine’s Day is coming up. So this week Stride Pro Wrestling’s General Manager Sam Hunter and I sit down and talk about our favorite couples in pro wrestling. Spoiler alert, we agreed on number one but that’s the only duplicate we had. It’s a fun show which was recorded at the Stride Pro Wrestling building hours before a show.
Stride returns on March 2 with Strideiversary: the 3 year anniversary of the company. Check out the website for all the details. Sam and I discuss the matches coming that night.

This week, YOU THE LISTENER submitted comic book characters to Nerds United to have us cast them if we were in charge of Hollywood. We’re not – but we still had a lot of fun casting the following:
New Batman
Small Green Lantern Corps
Moon Knight
He-Man
Thundercats
Clayface
Ghost Rider
Spectre
Neil Gaiman’s Sandman
X-O Manowar
Lobo
Spawn
Wolverine
So enjoy the show and the random topics we have ahead of it. Let us know what you think about the show by leaving a review on your favorite app (like Apple Podcasts). And when you do, good or bad, we’ll read them on the show.

This week, Patrick Gerhart joins Greg and Jon “Damn” Johnston to talk about the woes that the Nebraska Men’s Basketball Team has experienced. It’s been six losses in a row, and that sucks. It’s been a season-ending injury to Isaac Copeland, and that’s even worse.
What happens the rest of the way? We don’t know – but we have theories.
Jon mentions Nebraska baseball, because he’s a glutton for punishment. And Greg hypes up 80,000+ tickets sold to the Spring Game and Devine Ozigbo being snubbed by the Combine committee. GOOD TIMES!

Thirty years ago, Billy Joel gave a crash course in history with his song “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” A lot has happened since then. In this episode of Positive Cynicism, @chadsmart and Travis (@PopCultIQ) Yates discuss topics they think should be included in an updated version of the song.
While Billy Joel may not think the song is one of his better musical offerings, the catchy tune is sure to get stuck in your head after listening to this episode. What items do you think should be listed? Do you think you can come up with a good rhyme scheme to fit a new version?
Special thanks to Noelle Smith for the closing song. You can find her on Twitter @NoelleSmith5, and noellesmithmusic.com.

Indy wrestling has become a big part of my life over the past three years. I’ve been the ring announcer for Stride Pro Wrestling since March 2016. You’ve heard from several Stride wrestlers on this podcast.
That’s exactly what you’re going to hear this week too. But from the corner of the locker room. Time constraints prevented me from having more guests, but three of Stride’s top good guys took some time to chat with me. You’ll have to listen to find out who joins the show this week.

This week on Nerds United, Greg and Mike take topics from a hat. They wrote the topics down ahead of time but didn’t share the ideas with the other, so part of it is a surprise.
The guys talk about the Avengers and the Justice League, latent mutant abilities, shin splints, bringing back key old-time phrases (“BOY HOWDY!”), Letterkenny, 100 Years, Quentin Tarantino, and more.
Episode 121 will depend a lot on you, as the guys want you to provide superheroes (or villains) you’d like to see on the big screen and they will give their casting recommendations, a la this archived episode way back in October 2014.
So be looking for that post on social media later in the week, as we’ll need some time to do our proper research!
In the meantime, enjoy Episode 120 of the best podcast you aren’t telling anyone about!
Five Heart Podcast Episode 110: Bedding Cattle and Husker WBB[ 54:16 | 0.01 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (634)
In all reality, I could have published this episode on Thursday and had it BEFORE the Husker women’s basketball team played Purdue.
But I 100% wasn’t that smart. That’s on me. As we got recording, and I said on the show “of course this will drop after the Purdue game,” it was locked in. So apologies and such.
In this episode, Jill Heemstra joins us and we talk about bedding cattle. But let’s face it – we know why you’re all here. To talk about the Nebraska women’s basketball team!
There are plenty of opportunities for this middle-of-the-pack team to make some upward movement before the Big Ten Tournament. But the W’s need to start happening. As I’m typing this, the Huskers are up 62-43 on the road at Purdue. That’s a great start. So we’ll see how it goes for the Scarlet and Cream clad ladies of Lincoln.

The latest edition of Wonder Why features an artist whose musical career was short-lived due to a more successful television career. That’s not really a spoiler given the prolific nature of Tracey Ullman’s body of work over the past thirty years. Taking her comedic career out of consideration, could Tracey Ullman’s musical career lasted beyond her one hit in 1984?
That’s the focus @chadsmart and @MikeDeKalb examine. Breaking down Tracey’s album “You Broke My Heart in 17 Places” track by track, with discussion about Stiff Records staff and song writer Kirsty MacColl the dots are connected to artists and people ranging from the Beach Boys to Alice Cooper to Charles Manson. And of course, there’s talk about The Simpsons.
Wrapping up the episode, Mike and Chad give their picks of the month. What do they think you should be listening to at the start of 2019? What are the options for next month? Will Mike say “interesting and fascinating?” Will Chad work in a reference to the band Extreme? All these questions and more you weren’t asking are answered in the episode.
The 2019 Royal Rumble is over as you’re listening to this week’s episode. But I still wanted to take the time to do a Royal Rumble themed show. So welcome to the first ever Royal Rumble Roulette
Guest co-host Luke Lay and I discuss the 1994 Royal Rumble. How we get to the talking points is the fun part, as we draw numbers just like in the real Rumble match.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 109: Ziggy, Dedrick, and the Royal Rumble[ 58:00 | 0.01 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (894)
First of all, let me say this…if Devine Ozigbo or Dedrick Mills were in the Royal Rumble, I’d say either of them would win it.
Ziggy had a great showing at the East-West game, will likely get an invitation to the NFL Combine, and could be a third-round draft pick. That’s our prediction.
From the “better late than never” department, we discuss the signing of Dedrick Mills. But that’s not all – as we heard last weekend about defensive back Noa Pola-Gates’ commitment to Nebraska.
Some rather dreary news at the end of the episode, but we’ll let you find that one out on your own.

Positive Cynicism EP. 76: Talking Politics (No arguing/screaming/blaming allowed)[ 59:51 | 0.01 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (636)
What does everyone like to talk and listen to people talk about? Politics, of course. With the government shut down and a day before @chadsmart embarks on a trip to Washington D.C., he is joined by Brandon Cooley to discuss current political events.
Chad and Brandon try to show that people with differing views can have a honest, open and civil discourse about polarizing subjects. There is no “my side is right, you’re side is wrong” attitude here. It doesn’t matter side of the aisle you support. This podcast attempts to bring the two sides together. Or at least point out the fallacies of thinking one side is better than the other.
My hope is this is the last episode of My 1-2-3 Cents as you’ve known it. 218 shows later and I’m ready to implement some changes. One of those changes includes adding weekly co-hosts. If you’re a wrestling fan and interested in being a co-host sometime, let me know.

Hooch, Hoss, and Jon Damn Johnston are back for the first time in a month and Jon LOVES Nebrasketball. And he doesn’t understand why Husker fans are self-loathing, to the point of self-destructive. It’s not helpful.
This episode, we get live in-game updates and reactions as Jon and Hoss are watching Nebraska vs #6 Michigan State. From outbursts of laughter to yelling at the television, follow along with the boys on the podcast.
The guys also talk about the College Football Playoff championship between Clemson and Alabama. And the notion of paying $165 for a ticket to the AFC Championship intrigues Hoss.
And Jon asks the question on everyone’s mind…does defense still win championships?

For their first episode of 2019, @chadsmart and Eric Bennett start the show discussing Eric’s most anticipated films of 2019. From there, Chad explains how the cost of going to the movies keeps him away from the theater which leads to a bigger discussion regarding the price of extracurricular activies.
I’ve made a lot of friends over the years thanks to professional wrestling. One of them is Ryan Boman. But he’s not your average wrestling fan. Ryan has created a website called The Gorilla Position and is telling the stories of pro wrestling’s storytellers.
From there Ryan and his team developed Pinned.Biz which works to help market the men and women in the world of pro wrestling. I love the concept of both of his websites and we talk all about the idea behind them both in this week’s podcast.
Ryan also shares some thoughts on the landscape of today’s pro wrestling scene; including the creation of All Elite Wrestling. Plus, he was in Nashville recently covering Impact Wrestling’s Homecoming event. Give it a listen and check him out on social media too (@RyanKBoman & @GWPWeb on Twitter).

Five Heart Podcast Episode 107: Nebrasketball with Mitch Lohmeier[ 20:34 | 0.01 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (594)
Well folks, we’re back. Fractured, but we’re back. No Hoss. No Jon Damn Johnston. But we get the Five Heart debut of Corn Nation’s youngest contributor (and hopefully a future Husker), Mitch Lohmeier.
Mitch covers Nebrasketball for CN and was recently accepted by UNL’s broadcasting school. No pressure. But he’ll do great wherever he goes. The only hang-up about this episode is a poor internet connection, which is rare these days. So we have to suffer through it. But what you get is the shortest Five Heart Podcast episode in some time. And for that, we’re sorry.
Nebraska has a bright second half in store for itself in 2019 if they come out swinging every game. After the win against Penn State this past week, it’s time to start stringing W’s together and making a run for the tournament. No time to take the foot off the gas.
I look forward to having Mitch on again in the future as he has a lot of good info in his head that I’d like to get out when the connection is better. But this week, enjoy a twenty-minute podcast.

New year, new Positive Cynicism. On this edition, @chadsmart and Travis (@PopCultIQ) Yates take on a random assortment of topics. Mike’s back this week and that means good things for you, faithful listener. In Episode 118, we talk about Y: The Last Man, Midnight Nation, Justice League, and a lot more.
Shout-outs to Mike’s mom (as always). And Chad and Mike at Positive Cynicism talked this week about their nostalgia for MTV, and I’ll tell ya, as a couple of guys who graduated high school in 2000…we didn’t have that MTV connection that those old farts had.
And of course, we talk about Aquaman, because GREG ACTUALLY SAW A MOVIE WHILE IT WAS IN THEATERS! And also Greg’s pretty sure that Mike would start his own podcast with friends who could see movies in theaters in a timely manner.
Oh yeah – be sure to check out the store for great merchandise!
As 2018 comes to a close, @chadsmart and @MikeDeKalb take a break from the normal Wonder Why formula as the month of nostalgia on Positive Cynicism continues. From discussing their first albums and concerts to their memories of Mtv, Chad and Mike stroll down the musical memory lane.
It’s the end of another year and Chad and Kevin are back with the annual Centy Awards. The categories were trimmed down a bit compared to previous years, but the discussion is a meaningful one. Let us know how you will look back on the world of pro wrestling in 2018.

So – new editor here on WordPress. I’m nothing if not stuck in my ways, so obviously I hate it. Much like every new layout of Facebook that gets rolled out, it will just take some getting used to. Hopefully it doesn’t take long to figure it out.
This conversation starts with comic books like Y: The Last Man and its upcoming TV adaptation as well as various titles from Valiant Comics. Then we talk about the Mandela Effect, Curious George, and Berenstain Bears.
We talk about popcorn and peanut butter, Nebraska athletics, beer, and Jamie Farr. It’s a gem of a podcast, with special shout outs to Mike’s mom (because she won’t listen). Don’t forget to do some shopping at jitterymonkey.com/shop because this podcast doesn’t pay for itself…and it’d be really nice if it did.
It’s a Christmas miracle. Continuing the @JitteryMonkey holiday crossover event, @kevinhunsperger joins @chadsmart to continue the Positive Cynicism month of nostalgia to discuss how and why they’re fans of professional wrestling. Starting with their earliest memories of wrestling and going through their thoughts on the current state of wrestling, Kevin and Chad touch on favorite moments from the last thirty years as well as things they would like to see change. Along the way the discussion delves into a meeting of the Becky Lynch mutual appreciation society.

Well, we’re finally here. The weekend before Christmas. And if you’re like me, you are nowhere near ready for the holiday. From decorating to wrapping, yeah – it’s another year of being behind the Eight Ball.
In this episode, Mike and I are joined by our very special guest, Mike’s son Nolan. Nolan brings a youthful perspective that we have long outgrown. But this kid is sharp and quick-witted and not afraid to lay in a few zingers from time to time. And what he did after we finished recording – well, I can’t even explain it.
So enjoy the show. Enjoy your holiday season. and Merry Christmas!
After giving Jon a couple weeks off so he could take photos at the regional and national volleyball tournaments, Fearless Leader is back with Hoss and Hooch, and he brought along Corn Nation’s recruiting correspondent, Rick Cone. We recorded the evening of College Football’s Early Signing Day, and the Husker fax machine was busy!
Who’s N? Who’s still on the fence? Who were the big “gets” of the day, as Scott Frost and Co. concluded their first full year of recruiting?
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Husker Women’s Volleyball team and their outstanding showing in what was supposed to be a “rebuilding year.” Looking forward to even more good things from them in the years to come.

Hey there. Greg Mehochko here. I’m taking over Positive Cynicism for one episode. RELAX! Chad Smart and Mike “The Hockey Transplant” DeKalb will be back next time for their WONDER WHY series.
This is a return of Question Everything. Meet Rob Kugler. He’s been a longtime friend of mine. He has done a lot in his life, from serving in the military to trying his hand at acting to taking his beautiful three-legged chocolate lab on a once-in-a-lifetime, coast-to-coast trip over her final months. A happy dog, afflicted by cancer, who had a leg removed.
We talk about Rob and his military background, love and loss, his trip with Bella, and writing the book that tries to capture everything.
I pre-ordered my copy of the book back in November. I followed Rob and Bella’s trip all along, and I encourage you to check out Rob’s Instagram for some really uplifting pictures, stories, and smiles. Listen to the podcast and if you want more of this tremendous story, I highly encourage you to buy the book!
Thanks for listening. This is at times an emotional story. But it’s also inspirational.

Yippie Ki Yay Mister Falcon. In this installment of “Culture Popped*” @chadsmart and guest host Eric Bennett exmine some movies that are non-traditional Christmas offerings. What is Shane Black’s obsession with the holiday season? Would you want Steve Martin on the other end of the phone if you were calling a suicide prevention hotline? Is an old Chinese store the best place to buy a pet? And most importantly, why are people throwing away a perfectly good white boy? Most of these questions aren’t answered but the movies that inspire them are discussed.
The biggest shocker of the episode are the discovery of what holiday “classics” Eric and Chad have not seen. The second biggest shock is how they managed to get through the show without a reference to Ernest Saves Christmas.

In what will probably the first of two episodes this week on the Five Heart Podcast, Hoss and Hooch talk about some of the players departing from the Husker football program and who we (okay, really, it’s Hoss) think will step up in the future to take those spots.
The list goes like this:
Interior Offensive Linemen
Bryce Benhart at Right Tackle
Replacing Devine Ozigbo
Replacing Stanley Morgan Jr
Defensive Front Seven
Inside Linebackers
Pass Rush
Dynamic defensive Schemes/Calls.
We also talk about the progression of Adrian Martinez, and perhaps what we can expect from him in the future.
Also discussed, a tease about conversations later this week regarding Nebraska basketball and volleyball.

Stride Pro Wrestling celebrated the holiday season with the show Christmas Break over the weekend. It was an action-packed event that had many twists and turns as we close out 2018. I’m already looking forward to our next show, Jan. 5, 2019.
This week on the podcast I recap the event, look ahead to the future and answer more of your questions. It’s a fun episode and it’s less than 30 minutes so you’ve got time to listen.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 103: Previewing Husker VB vs Kentucky[ 49:34 | 68.08 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (866)
On this week’s episode, made available with hours to spare ahead of the regional semifinal match, Greg is joined by Ty Peteranetz to discuss the 2018 Husker VB squad.
How did this Husker volleyball team come together? They certainly weathered the storm of a tough stretch of action in the country’s best volleyball conference. It’s a fact. Of the eight games in the regional semifinals taking place today, six of them include Big Ten teams. Suck it, SEC.
With graduation looming for all-American Mikaela Foecke and others, who does Ty foresee stepping into the top-dog role next year, and who’s already making a name for themselves on this young Nebraska squad?
What did the Huskers do right down the stretch and what do they have to do to win the Minnesota Regional that includes a Gopher squad that has beaten our beloved Big Red twice?
And how is Ty doing as the dad of a newly crowned one-year-old, and how are we handling those odd child smells?
It’s all in this episode of the Five Heart Podcast.

‘Tis the holiday season and with it comes the feelings of nostalgia. On this episode of Positive Cynicism, @chadsmart and Travis Yates (@PopCultIQ) discuss why nostalgia conjures strong feelings. From the simple pleasures of our youth to the yearning for how things used to be, what is the driving force for nostalgia? Not only in our personal lives but in the pop culture realm of entertainment. Everything old is new again. From movie and television remakes to “toys” being geared more for collectors than kids, there is a growing sense that nostalgia and name brand recognition matter most.
What affect will this have on the current generation of kids when they hit middle age? What will they be nostalgic about to their kids? Chad and Travis try to answer this question.
Last year I joined forces with my buddy Tom Harness (Harness Digital Marketing) for the #UglyChristmasSuit fundraiser. Together we raised just over $8,300 for a non-profit group here in southern Illinois called Children Home + Aid. This year we’re doing it again, but for Honor Wreaths for Veterans. Please donate here.
Tom and I discuss the fundraiser in this week’s podcast and of course tie it into the world of pro wrestling. Tom also reviews the importance of branding for all of us, not just pro wrestlers.
Other notes this week, Stride Pro Wrestling’s Christmas Break show is Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Stride Arena (1130 N. Division Street in Carterville, Illinois). Bell time is 6:30 p.m., doors open at 6. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Be there, it’s gonna be a great night of family-friendly pro wrestling action. Bring a new, pro wrestling action figure for the first ever Stride Pro Wrestling/My 1-2-3 Cents toy drive. All donations are going to Toys for Tots and you could win a prize too!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 102: We're Full of Self-Examination[ 1:02:41 | 0.01 MB ]Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (1100)
Well, Nebraska football season is officially over. Time to “Win the Damn Off-Season” as Hoss would say. So in this episode, Hoss, Jon, and Hooch talk a little bit about the game at Iowa. We discuss the season of “what could have been” and what eventually happened.
We talk about the silliness (ie: stupidity) of the Iowa Marching Band Member who lied (I mean, the video evidence is there) and said the Husker football team did not participate in the “Wave” to the patients at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital after the first quarter. It’s a long-standing tradition, cute gesture that Kinnick Stadium fans, the Hawkeyes, and opposing teams have practiced since all the way back in 2017. And Hoss raises a good question (one Jerkeye fans may have to face on Black Friday 2020).
Some Huskers were recognized by the Big Ten coaches and media for the accomplishments they had this season, led by departing senior Stanley Morgan Jr. So the guys go down the list of honorees, and conclude that the future is bright.
Speaking of the future, if you haven’t yet, check out the pinned tweet over at The Five Heart Podcast Twitter and vote in the poll about how Jon Damn Johnston should spend the off-season. Should he be a “rah-rah” sunshine pumper or should he play the role of the old man, contrarian curmudgeon?

Hello and welcome to a brand new Nerds United. We sure are happy you’re here.
In this week’s episode, Mike and Greg talk about their Thanksgiving weekends and their awesome families. Another of your favorite Marvel shows is leaving Netflix, which we all anticipated. Fuller House is still on the streaming service. But that Disney App is starting to look pretty inviting. However, we’re still pretty sure there’s one 1946 movie that will remain buried in the vault.
Hear Nickelback cover a Metallica song, and hear the guys talk about the Joker movie, and how Mike says the DC Cinematic Standalone Universe is still unproven.
“You’re a wizard, Harry.” Famous words from a famous giant (or giant-like man). But what are some ridiculous things that Hagrid could have told Harry Potter that would have been just as believable (if not just as odd) as telling a ten-year-old boy that he’s a wizard?

This month on Wonder Why, Chad “Limited Effort” Smart and Mike “Rabbit Hole” DeKalb attempt to talk about Sly Fox’s 1986 hit “Let’s Go All The Way” and figure out why the duo of “Mudbone” Cooper and Michael “Not Hector” Camacho didn’t find success with any follow up singles.
Breaking down the history of Sly Fox does get a bit funky at times. Find out the interesting use of the back beat of “Let’s Go All the Way” as well as what a couple of clowns had to do with exposing one of Mtv’s worst kept secrets.
Once they’ve exhausted the history of Sly Fox, @chadsmart and @MikeDeKalb give your their holiday picks for the month.
