Five Heart Podcast Episode 151: Talking with the Enemy

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Greg, Hoss, and Jon get you ready for Saturday’s match-up with Wisconsin. And to do that, we spend a little time talking with Tyler Hunt, Podcast Manager at Bucky’s 5th Quarter.

We talk with Tyler about Wisconsin’s expectations heading into the year and how the losses to Illinois and Ohio State may have derailed post-season plans. We talk about the elephant in the backfield known as Jonathon Taylor, and what weaknesses, if any, the Badgers possess.

After we let Tyler depart, we talk about why Wisconsinians (Wisconsegians – if we follow the Io_a way of naming things) are so happy. We discuss the youth on the Husker team and why we likely won’t see any more freshmen on the field in their redshirt year.

And we do spend a few minutes talking about Nebraska’s second-favorite son, Garrett Nelson, as well as Damion Jackson being awarded Blackshirts.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 150: An Episode of Biblical Proportions

Well, this is our 150th episode. And in it, we do our best to talk about anything BUT Husker football. Let’s face it – it’s a coffin on roller skates at the moment. It will turn around. I don’t know when. No one does.

In this episode, we talk about making a change at starting QB, bible references, wasted defensive efforts, mind-boggling play-call, Nebrasketball, the Joker, and, uh…bedroom performance enhancers.

Nerds United Episode 154: Playing Catch Up

This week on the podcast, Greg and Mike pair their beer to some delicious Halloween candy. And the guys get going talking about the topics you come for each episode.

Topics like:

Ant-Man 3
Bloodshot movie and comics
Spider-Man Noir series
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel
Arrow
Greg being behind on Marvel Netflix shows yet seeming watching John Carter more than once.

And a lot more.

Come for the conversation, stay for the laughs. Or vice versa. We’re not picky. Thanks for listening. If you don’t mind, on your favorite podcast app, hit that Subscribe button. It’s free. And you’ll get new episodes delivered to your device each time. We’re out to save you time. Because we care.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 149: We Mustn’t Fight Amongst Ourselves

There was a good amount of discord in this episode of the Five Heart Podcast. Jon and Hoss yell at each other. Greg steps out of the line of fire, but tries to keep the show on track as we discuss the loss to Indiana. Who stepped up and who shoulders the bulk of the responsibility for Loss Number Four?

We also get into the hot topic around the NCAA these days, that of Name, Image, and Likeness, and a student-athlete’s ability to generate income from theirs.

This week, it’s Nebraska at Purdue. Whose dynamic playmakers will have the better day? We’ll find out Saturday.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 148: Time to Be 2-0 Against Indiana in B1G Play

This week on a new episode of the Five Heart Podcast, Hoss and Greg get together for the first time since before the Northwestern game. The guys talk about close games and blowouts, advances made and the long road ahead.

Then the guys preview the upcoming game against Indiana, the first time the Hoosiers have been to Lincoln since 1977.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 147: Jon’s Bye Week Rants

This post doesn’t really require anything else. This is the BOGO of Jon’s rants, because you get two. And technically, you’re not buying anything. It’s a bye week after the Huskers lost the beloved $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy, WHICH GOT MORE BROKEN AFTER THE GAME!

Nerds United Episode 153: The Batman Casting and Chad Frickin’ Smart!

This week on a new Nerds United, Greg and Mike discuss the headlines of the week, like casting choices for The Batman, Thor wanting to team up with Captain America and Iron Man once more, and a sequel to the Harry Potter franchise.

And then we are joined by Chad frickin’ Smart, former host of Positive Cynicism on the Jittery Monkey Podcast Network, and founder of the Positive Cynicism Podcast Network. We talk about a couple movies Chad has seen recently, namely Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and The Joker. It was a great chat w/ our buddy from El Lay.

Thanks as always for listening to the show. If you don’t mind, share it. Thanks.

Nerds United Episode 152: The Women of Marvel and Other Topics

This week on a brand new episode of your favorite comic book related podcast ever, Greg and Mike talk about places you may or may not have ever heard about, mention Kevin Smith and Triple H, talk about an all-female Marvel movie, how and when Daredevil could be a part of the MCU and which famous villain turned hero is championing the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen’s return, Jennifer Aniston hating on Marvel movies (probably out of jealousy), Brock vs Cain II in Saudi Arabia, Kevin Hunsperger, host of My 1-2-3 Cents the Podcast and 1/2 of the Stride Pro Wrestling Tag Team Champions, and run-on sentences.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 146: Game of Chairs

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Jon and Greg discuss the win over Northwestern, the highs and the lows found therein. The guys also take a few minutes to preview the game against Minnesota this weekend.

But the highlight of the show is the conversation with Luke Peterson from the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy Coalition (my word, not theirs). With the trophy on the line once again this weekend, the Chair Trophy fund raiser is in full swing, and it’s up to you, Husker Nation, to ensure a fund-raising win for the Big Red. Make your way to their website (www.brokenchairtrophy.com) to pledge your support while making a donation to Team Jack. There’s a fund-raising event at the Mall of America tonight, complete with the Nebraska Pep Band. More information can be found here.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 145: Moving Forward

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, we try to talk about the loss to Ohio State, but it still sucks. We get through it as quickly as we can while we ask some important questions:

What loss hurt worse, Ohio State or Colorado?
How many wins would it take to make this fan base happy?

Then the guys take a look at Northwestern, who will be in Lincoln this weekend.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 254: Now Hit My Music

Theme music in wrestling is something most fans take for granted. For as long as I can remember MOST wrestlers came to the ring to some kind of song. But it wasn’t always that way.

This week my guest co-host Chad Smart and I break down some of our favorite themes and why music is so important in branding a performer.

Nerds United Episode 151: Spider-Man, The Batman, and a 67 Impala

This week on a brand new Nerds United – two episodes never alike! – Greg and Mike discuss their lives over the last week. Then they talk about the Walker, Texas Ranger reboot, Jurassic World 3 bringing back some classic names, Brandon Routh as Superman, why Michael Rosenbaum is NOT in the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover for DC CW, and a little (BIG) story surrounding everyone’s favorite web-slinger.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 144: Illinois, Gameday and An Ohio State University

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, we do a little breakdown of Nebraska’s 42-38 road win over Illinois. Plus, with College Gameday coming to Lincoln, there’s lots to discuss, like who we would like to see as the celebrity guest picker. And if you weren’t aware, an Ohio State University football team is coming to town for a showdown under the lights. So there’s a lot going on.

Nerds United Episode 150: EPISODE 150, Y’ALL!

This week on the show, Greg and Mike wax nostalgia and talk about olden times, bring back a long-lost segment of the show, and talk about some of the various news and notes making the rounds this week.

And if you make it to the end, the guys run down some of the offerings on the Disney+ streaming app.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 143: Huskers Hope to Beat Their Second Foe from Illinois

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, the guys discuss the win over the the Northern Illinois Huskies, talking the positives (that defense) and the negatives (those special teams, WOOF).

Then we talk about this weekend’s game at Illinois, the opener of the Big Ten slate. But coming out of the break, Greg and Hoss serenade Jon with the musical stylings of Kenny Rogers. That right there is worth the download.

Nerds United Episode 149: Writer and Hockey Enthusiast Stephanie Phillips

This very special mid-week episode features writer Stephanie Phillips, author of Aftershock Comics’ Descendent, as well as Kicking Ice from Ominous Press, and Devil Within from Black Mask Studios. Upcoming projects include but are not limited to The Butcher of Paris from Dark Horse Comics, and other unnamed projects we can’t even discuss.

Learn about Stephanie’s life and career outside of comics. And we do a deep dive into Descendent, which I HIGHLY recommend. Ask your local comic book shop about it. And enjoy the show!

Nerds United Episode 148: Classic TMNT and Micro Machines

This week on Nerds United, Greg and Mike replay the first two episodes of the classic 1989 cartoon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, providing their own unique brand of comedy.

We also hear about classic Micro Machines, UFC vs WWE, Kevin Hunsperger’s finishing maneuver, and more. Trips down memory lane and old toys for a new generation.

Thanks for joining us wherever you are. We appreciate you.

Oh, and at one point, Mike turns off his microphone and we don’t realize it but it’s okay because he’s talking about Brock Lesnar and Brock Lesnar is a turd.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 142: #$%&!

We’re doing the unthinkable – revisiting the loss to those damn Buffaloes. That’s about it. Hoss was there. He had some nice things to say about most of the CU fans he encountered.

And our final thoughts on Colorado:

https://youtu.be/7GUGKBRP8Lk?t=44

And we preview this weekend’s game against NIU. A few other quick-hit topics are on tap as well.

THAT’S RIGHT! And I’ll do it again! This week on the show, Travis Yates, regular guest on Chad’s Positive Cynicism podcast, stops by via Skype to chat about holding Advanced Degrees in Pop Culture, avoiding a hurricane, the evolution of entertainment, CGI vs practical effects, hating on Terminator, some must-see films, and more.

Nerds United Episode 146: A Big Beefy Wookie

This week on Nerds United, we look at Star Wars A New Hope and cast it through the lens of 2019. Star Wars never existed, and we are casting it with the actors and actresses of today.

Who would you cast as some of the main characters in Star Wars if it were being made in 2019 for the first time? Let us know in the comments or on social media.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 140: Gray Lumpy Beach Balls

This week on the Five Heart Podcast…Hoss is out. Jon Damn Johnston is out. It’s just Greg and special guest/co-host Paul Dalen. And the first topic of conversation?

Armadillos.

But then we put a bow on the series of game previews, discussing Maryland and Iowa. Let’s be honest, we don’t give a crap about the Maryland game, but we all have November 29 circled on our calendars. Leftover turkey, fighting over cheap electronics, and serving up a 50-burger for the Squawkeyes.

During the course of the show, we also talk about two Huskers suspended indefinitely, Mo Washington’s uncertain status, two new running back recruits, and one match-up with the underwhelming Jaguars.

And check out the great deal on Paul’s book, available on your Kindle device:

Nerds United Episode 145: Jason White Returns and Talks Villains

Jason White, writer and artist of Lost Owl Kingdom, returns to Nerds United as inspiration for this mid-week episode. First we catch up on some of Jason’s news and happenings of this summer.

Then we get down to the matter at hand…which villain do you agree with? Maybe it’s the logic they share in one of their monologues.

via GIPHY

Sit back and relax as Greg, Mike, and Jason chat villains, and don’t forget that we’ll have your regular show for you at the end of the week! Because we care!

Nerds United Episode 144: Spider-Man Tug of War and D23

This week on Nerds United, Mike and Greg discuss at length the split between Marvel and Sony over our favorite web-slinger. That was news that rocked the nerd world.

Plus, Masters of the Universe is coming back, thanks to Hero of the Show Kevin Smith (and Netflix). And there’s a lot more content heading to Disney+ that we learned about at D23. So it’s not all sorrow and sadness.

Enjoy the episode and share it with anyone you know. Because you love us, and we love you…probably. I mean, Greg is married but Mike may love you.

….long time.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 139: Great Expectations

This week, Hoss, Greg, and Jon Damn Johnston discuss the expectations surrounding a two-time (TWO-TIME) 4-8 team that is ranked #24 in the AP Pre-Season Poll. And we hear from HCSF and DC Erik Chinander on their thoughts on the pre-season ranking.

We also briefly discuss Justin Fields being named the starter at Ohio State and preview two games in November – a road game at Purdue and a home meeting with Wisconsin.

This special mid-week episode of Nerds United has Greg in his favorite comic book store. He’s talking with Brian the owner about the state of the comic book industry, how digital platforms have affected brick and mortar stores, and how publishers and comic book store owners are co-existing.

If you haven’t yet, check out this short video Greg and Brian made while destroying a couple of comic books.

Mike will be back for the week’s recap of news Friday night as usual. There are a lot of headlines that came out this week. We look forward to sharing them all with you.

Nerds United Episode 142: The Boys Talking about The Boys…and more

This week on an all-new Nerds United, Greg and Mike are talking about Catwoman’s “controversial” new costume, as well as The Lion King, Avengers: Endgame, destroying comics, and The Boys (now on Amazon Prime).

Give it a listen and share it with the nerds in your social circle.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 138: A Corncob Peeing on a Hawkeye

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, we deep-dive into a single image that made its way onto the internet this week.

We talk about Ohio State trying to trademark a word we use hundreds of times a day. Disney/ESPN doesn’t care about you.

Plus we preview the three games in October and Jon takes us back in time to Memorial Stadium 1978.

And Jon (83) calls Hoss (28) a “crusty old man.”

Nerds United Episode 140: Putting a Bow on SDCC News

This is it! Your intense review of all things San Diego Comic Con. Plus The Boys on Amazon Prime, lots of Marvel news, and a cameo (run-in) from Positive Cynicism host Chad Smart regarding an interaction with an Avenger.

Enjoy the show. Please take a minute or two to leave a rate and review on your favorite podcast app. It may seem like a pain in the ass, but it could help get our show to more listeners. And if we do that, we’ll cut down the length of the show one minute for each new listener (probably).

Five Heart Podcast Episode 136: Beth Merrigan and Husker Volleyball

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Greg rocks a solo show as the other two Legs of the Tripod are unavailable.

Say hello to Beth Merrigan, Corn Nation’s Volleyball Writer. In her Five Heart debut, Beth informs us that she’s a Nebraska transplant (but not going anywhere) who has loved volleyball all her life, and just wants to talk volleyball all the time.

And we’re very cool with that.

Beth is a mom of four, wife of one, proud Panhandle resident, Army Reservist, and grammar enthusiast (okay, I made that last part up, but we can hope).

What does Beth think of the Husker volleyball team in 2019? Find out when you listen to the newest episode of the Five Heart Podcast.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 135: O-Line Depth and Northern Illinois

This week on the show, Greg Hoss, and Jon talk about the silver lining that was the loss two years ago to the Northern Illinois Huskies. Why? Because we’re previewing this season’s Week Three match-up with the MAC Team.

But there’s also a lot of talk about the offensive line and position changes that helped bring about such depth. The defensive line gets some love too. And there’s another citation involving a Husker and the sweet cheeba.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 134: Minnesota is Flecking Insane

This week on the show, the guys have some fun with reports and quotes following Day One of Big Ten Media Days in Chi-Town.

We took particular joy this week in making fun of Minnesota and their Head Coach PJ Fleck. Fleck, if you just tuned in, had this to say at the podium on Thursday.

(Shout out to Friend of the Show Erin Sorensen. We’re pretty sure she doesn’t know we exist.)

So after that gem, the show fired back:

So after verbally abusing Minnesota (and Jon for reasons found within), we turn our attention to our Week 2 opponent, Colorado, with a lot less analysis than Husker Mike and pretty much just raw emotion.

And there’s a pretty special cameo at the end.

We also discuss Greg’s existential crisis about living in a Matrix.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 133: Crazy Pre-Season Rankings and South Alabama

In this week’e episode, our intrepid trio discusses a few pre-season polls that Nebraska (and its fans) popped up on this past week. We also look at a more established pre-season ranking as done by Phil Steele.

After the break, the guys discuss the season-opening match-up with the University of South Alabama and decide to try to get their Head Coach Steve Campbell on the show as a guest.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 132: It’s July. We’re All Bored.

via GIPHY

Fact is, there’s still some stuff to discuss, even if it only tangentially connects to Nebraska. For example? DID MEL TUCKER LOSE HIS DAMN MIND? We discuss the insanity that was Mel Tucker (this is real news, not that fake Laviska Shenault stuff from a couple weeks ago. We opened up July with “Well, what has Nebraska done?”

And that’s how we opened the show. Then we started writing a parody song on the spot.

Then in a healthy bit of team-building, Jon asked how Greg’s son is doing with the potty training.

This week we welcome back the Co-Host of the Year Mike Luther. Mike saw Spider-Man Far From Home on opening day and talked briefly about the movie (NO SPOILERS). We also discussed Season Three of Jessica Jones on Netflix, Avenger: Endgame being re-released to theaters and how what was added upset some movie-goers. But we also talked about dreams and how reality sometimes creeps into them. We talk about The Walking Dead ending its tremendous run, and the beer we are drinking.

PLUS

Your voice was heard and you, the fans of the podcast, are now and shall forever be referred to as “Nerdy Nimrods.”

Five Heart Podcast Episode 131: Husker Football Recruiting with Rick Cone

I came to know Jason through our mutual friend in the independent comics industry, Mr. Anthony Mathenia of Stache Publishing. So shout-out to Anthony.

In this episode, we will learn about Jason’s entry into comic books and why he writes about the content he does. We talk about his foray into acting and how he relocated to follow his dream.

And as a bonus, we discuss the dangers of technology. So give this one a listen. You won’t be disappointed. And share it with your friends. And support the Kickstarter.

That’s not asking too much, is it?

Five Heart Podcast Episode 130: The Globe-Trotting Nathaniel Perlow

This week on the Five Heart podcast, we get to visit with long-time Corn Nation contributor and first-time podcast guest Nathaniel Perlow. Nathaniel has been traveling abroad for some time and contributes with the Frosted Flakes each week. In this episode, we’ll learn about Nathaniel’s Husker fandom and how he came to write for Corn Nation.

We also talk about the hiring of Will Bolt as the new Husker baseball head coach, as well as Isaiah Roby possibly being taken in the second round of the NBA draft (we recorded before the draft began). And then there’s that bit about the #FakeNews out of Boulder, CO.

Andy Ketterson is here as well and that allows for some hockey (aka Canadian Soccer) talk. Did we mention the Blues won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history?

Nerds United Episode 136: The Stanley Cup and a Galaxy Far Far Away

Welcome to a brand new episode of Nerds United. This week, Greg and Mike are joined by special guest (and host of Jittery Monkey’s Positive Cynicism) Chad Smart!

Chad has gone coast to coast in the last week, flying from his home in Los Angeles to take in the historic Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Final in Boston. But he also traveled to the Galaxy’s Edge, and talked to your hosts about all that he saw at Disneyland’s newest expansion!

Then Greg and Mike discuss some additions and subtractions to streaming media, ie Jessica Jones and Swamp Thing. They also talk about Captain Marvel and have a poll up this weekend on the Facebook page for you to vote in!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 129: Frost’s Second Year, Wan’Dale, FSU and Hockey

The tripod is back! Greg, Hoss, and Jon Damn Johnston reunite to talk about the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Final, Wan’Dale Robinson and his recent doping scandal, Scott Frost and his second year, and the St. Louis Blues.

Also – Greg’s son doesn’t want to learn to use the toilet, and there’s much consternation about that. And Hoss loves his protein bar.

Nerds United Episode 135: Greg’s Alone on a Friday Night

Mike abandoned the show…to go SWIMMING?!? What the hell? So I did a little Facebook Live for a brief episode. Discussing cinematic Wolverine, podcast Wolverine, and shirtless Mike, which apparently resembles that of Wolverine.

There’s some stuff I forgot to discuss, but I’ll save that for next week when Mike returns.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 128: Darin Erstad, Mo Washington, and a Gent Named Warren

Hoss takes the night off and in his place we have both Jill Heemstra AND Mike Jaixen. The fearsome foursome discusses the resignation of Darin Erstad, Maruce Washington’s latest run-in with the law, the new Big Ten Commissioner, and the extended three-point line in NCAA men’s basketball.

Also, Futurama > The Simpsons.

Nerds United Episode 134: Indiana Jones, Deadpool, and Crossovers

It’s been a couple weeks but the CO-HOST OF THE YEAR is back! Mike makes his triumphant return to the show AND my kitchen table for a great conversation about Indiana Jones, Deadpool, the unlikelihood of a Marvel/DC crossover, King Kong and Godzilla, and The Matrix.

There’s beer. There’s laughs. It’s always a good time, at least for us. And if you enjoy what we’re doing here, throw us a rate and review on your favorite podcast app. That’s free. If you LOVE what we do here, buy some merch at the Jittery Monkey Shop.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 127: Husker Baseball, Football, and Oklahoma

Jon Damn Johnston took the night off, apparently. We don’t know what happened to him. There was radio silence from Minnesota until we were almost done recording. But here’s what we have in store for you:

Husker Baseball comes up short in the Big Ten Championship.
No more Oklahoma Drill in the NFL, and why Hoss doesn’t like that drill in the first place.
Tanner Farmer signs with Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL.
Husker Football and whooping that Coloradowa (Colorado/Iowa) ass.

Nerds United Episode 133: Kicking Off a Broderick Kickstarter

Hello again and welcome to a brand new episode if Nerds United. In this episode, Greg is talking to two past guests, Ron Bryce and Jay Peteranetz, creators of Broderick, a 4-issue comic book.

Broderick Issue #2 is now available for your support on Kickstarter.

http://kck.st/2WgR1kd

Issue #2 will feature a Kickstarter exclusive variant cover by Marvel/DC artist Tom Lyle. You have until June 27 to support this book. And really, there’s no reason not to. Indy comics, like indy music, movies, and even wrestling, are an art form, and you’re helping new content to be made.

So get out your wallet and pledge a buck…or twenty.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 126: Husker Heavy Lifters and Memorial Stadium Beer

This week’s show features news that we were not aware of regarding Ndamukong Suh’s previous contract. Oh, and the big man is moving back to Florida for another year of football. And he’ll be joining former Husker Lavonte David in Tampa Bay.

There are a couple of Nebraska natives who are putting in the effort in the weight room. Meanwhile, Bill Moos isn’t opposed to the idea of alcohol sales in Memorial Stadium…at least parts of Memorial Stadium.

Nerds United Episode 132: Batman, Rescue Rangers, Theater Etiquette

We’re back! After taking a week off after dropping two award-winning podcasts in one night two weeks ago, we’re here to talk about the recent news of Robert Pattinson being cast as Batman. But that’s not all.

Did you know there’s a Chip n Dale’s Rescue Rangers live action movie being made? And where does Gargoyles rank in Greg’s hierarchy of cartoons?

Popeye makes an appearance, and we talk about movie theater etiquette and what we prefer in our theater experiences.

So that’s the show. Please support us by throwing up a rate and review on the podcast app of your choice. And if you’re feeling really generous, buy a shirt at our SHOP. Buy this weekend and save 15% on everything!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 125: Husker Football Gateway Games, The Wizard of Oz, and a Ruined Mother’s Day

Here’s a quick rundown of the topics on this week’s show. We kick it off with a little acknowledged anger management as Hooch admits that he screwed up Mother’s Day. We talk about The Wizard of Oz, and how Jon is the All-Powerful Oz and how the Wicked Witch was equally stupid. And it must be stated that Hoss’ first gray hair was found…and swiftly dealt with.

Then after the break, memorable Husker moments that you would always see through to the end as well as your “gateway game,” the introduction to Husker football that you would share with someone who has no clue what Husker football is about.

Also, per our agreement with the Powers That Be, I’m legally obligated to share this image with you. You’ll know why when you listen to the show.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 124: Fantasy Booking National Championship QBs

This week, Hoss, JDJ, and Greg are joined by our Corn Nation colleague Keith Yaple to talk about the screwed up finish of the Kentucky Derby, and horse racing in general – which is a subject overall that we are not terribly familiar.

We posed the question to you – you get to take one Husker QB from anywhere in history and select them to lead the Huskers in a National Championship game. You “Use(d) Your Voice” and became a part of the show – and you can do so next week as well, just by calling (402) 327-1830.

I mean, it’s pretty much all right there in the title. In this episode, we’re talking about Avengers Endgame. If you haven’t seen that movie, your time would be better spent watching it before listening to this podcast.

Do NOT blame us if you feel cheated if you didn’t follow these basic rules. We are not responsible for ruining this movie and the last eleven years of Marvel goodness if you fail to watch the movie before listening to this episode.

Go watch it. Hell, Mike is going this weekend to see it again!

We talked fandom and how to tie the movies into pro wrestling. You can learn more at the Stride website here.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 122: Football Rule Changes and Attrition

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, your favorite Corn Nation podcast that includes both a number and a vital organ, Greg, Hoss, and Jon talk about an ass-kicking Easter bunny, which is different than an Easter bunny getting its ass kicked.

We also talk about some of the recent rules changes made to our beloved college football, like blind-side blocks and targeting, as well as overtime adjustments. And Greg gives his opinion as to what would make overtime really exciting.

There’s also talk about the latest on the players who are leaving the Husker football team, without the knowledge of Quayshon Alexander.

Nerds United Episode 129: Cape Comic Con, Game of Thrones, Avengers Endgame

This week, there’s no Mike. So it’s automatically 1/2 as awesome as usual. But I’m here with a shorter episode to get you ready for Cape Comic Con this coming weekend.

That’s not all the excitement headed your was the weekend of April 26. We also get Avengers Endgame! And I will be taking it in Friday night with my wife. I’m really excited, as I’m sure most of the world is. But if you know someone on your Facebook friends list who doesn’t get our love of these movie franchises, maybe they post things like “I don’t get what all of the hype is over these comic book movies” or something similar, just un-friend them. As the old saying goes, you don’t need that type of negativity in your life.

Spoiler alert…spoilers are coming.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 121: Spring Game, Husker Baseball, and Dot’s Pretzels

Keith Yaple covers Nebraska Baseball for Corn Nation, and since this is Keith’s debut on the Five Heart Podcast, we get to play a little “Get to Know You.”

The Husker Baseball team was in action while we were recording the episode, so we get some live in-game reaction and analysis from Keith. Keith provides some insight on the Huskers’ season to this point, up to and including the game Wednesday night against the UNO Mavericks.

Also – Keith…kind of a gambler. He won a handsome sum of money betting on women’s college basketball.

At the end of the show, we talk a little bit about the Husker Spring Game. So make sure you stay tuned for that!

Nerds United Episode 128: Disney+, Star Wars, and Shazam!

Holy crap! Greg made it to the movies! So this episode, we talk about Shazam! And Disney+ released its “go-live” date as well as the price points.

We talk about what Disney+ is offering, as well as what that announcement means for Netflix.

The other topics discussed are the updated Lion King movie, Lady and the Tramp, and a little movie franchise called Star Wars.

Thanks to Mike for getting all the celebrity shout-outs handled on social media. Mike’s the best! (not actually written by Mike…for clarification – GM)

Five Heart Podcast Episode 120: Spring [Game] Fever

It’s an exciting week to be a Husker fan – but also depressing. This Saturday is the Spring Game, a great day for fans to fill up Memorial Stadium. But it’s also the final nail in the coffin of anything football related until Fall practices begin. And WE DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO!

So in this brand new episode, we talk about the Red and White Team rosters and what Hoss hopes to see on Saturday.

We also discuss the latest news regarding RB Mo Washington and the rumors of Doc Sadler coming back to Nebraska as an assistant basketball coach.

Nerds United Episode 127: Ahh that Joker Trailer

It’s time for a new episode of your favorite podcast featuring your favorite people.

This week, Mike and Greg are talking about the Joker trailer that dropped this week. But we also talk about Shazam, Avengers Endgame (spoiler alert – don’t watch the latest trailer).

And don’t forget that we (Greg, Kevin from My 1-2-3 Cents, and Chad from Positive Cynicism…and hopefully Mike?) will be at Cape Comic Con this month, April 26-28. We’ll be there on the Saturday with a table and doing some podcast recording, so be sure to stop and say hi.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 119: Husker Hockey and Hoiberg

This week on the podcast, Nebraska Men’s Hockey Club Assistant Coach Reed Fuller comes back on the show to talk about the end of the season, including the regional tournament at Dordt College in Iowa and the national tournament in Frisco, Texas.

Our chat with Reed ends with the longtime Nebrasketball fan and season ticket holder giving his thoughts on Fred Hoiberg, who was officially announced as the new Nebraska Men’s Basketball Coach this week.

The second half of the show is spent talking about Hoiberg, Isaiah Roby, beer in Illinois, and the material that will be used for Hoiberg’s statue.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 118: Husker Sports and Hershey Park

There’s been a fair amount of news out of Lincoln this week, the least of which is the dismissal of Tim Miles as Men’s Basketball Head Coach. Bill Moos does well in press conferences, but has not at the time of this recording named a new head coach.

Go to www.hersheypark.com for all your Hershey Squirt needs (no poops were harmed in the making of this add).

The Husker Men’s Hockey Club went 0-3 at the National Tournament down in Frisco, TX. We hope to get Coach Reed Fuller on the show in the near future to talk about the experience.

Pass rush. Oh man, Hoss gets fired up about talking pass rush and coverage schemes. We do that out of the break while talking about Bo Pelini and why he truly failed at Nebraska.

Nerds United Episode 126: Top Five Comic Book Movie Scenes

Hey everyone – we’re back with a brand new episode of Nerds United. This episode starts with some news and notes but the episode is really centered around one of Mike’s more brilliant ideas – counting down our top five scenes from comic book movies.

What scenes from which movies made the cut? Do you agree or disagree with the scenes we selected? We want to know, so leave a comment on the Facebook page.

And rate/review the show on your favorite podcast app, show it to us, and you’re likely to receive something in the mail from the show. We don’t know what it is yet – but we have stuff to give away.

Enjoy the show and share it with your friends!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 117: #NebrasketballStrong

1-844-278-8555 – that’s the number to call Friday from 5am to 11pm to make a donation to the American Red Cross to help Nebraska residents affected by the storms last week.

Tim Miles and the Huskers are still playing basketball and it’s the end of March. That’s good news, right? The Huskers are up next against TCU Sunday night at 8:30pm (Central).

The Husker Hockey team boasts some All-Pacific Region players after this year.

And there’s some football talk after the break, the emergence of JoJo Domann, who you’d build your Husker team around, and the brief love affair Husker fans had with UCF and how UCF fans turned out to be bitches (paraphrasing).

Check out the merch at www.jitterymonkey.com/shop and thanks for supporting the show.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 116: Nebrasketball on a Roll

Woo buddy, the Husker men’s basketball team has won three in a row, knocking off some good competition, and are continuing their trek through the Big Ten Tournament. It’s an exciting time for the fans.

The Husker Men’s Hockey Club was victorious at the regional championship last weekend, punching its ticket to the national championship tournament in Frisco, TX later this month.

As for Husker football, we discuss the expected departure of Mo Washington, as he turned himself in to California officials due to the legal situation involving him and an inappropriate video. Which prompts us all to remind you all to MAKE GOOD DECISIONS! And we talk about the ceiling for Adrian Martinez: where he could take this team and where this team could eventually take him.

Plus Bob Diaco, Nebraska weather, and phone emojis.

It’s all in this exciting and somewhat organized episode of THE FIVE HEART PODCAST!

Nerds United Episode 125: Two Guys, a Girl, and a Movie Theatre

Well the two guys are Greg and Mike, obviously. The girl – Captain Marvel. The movie theatre is where Greg and Mike saw Captain Marvel on opening night.

Did it live up to the hype? Were there twists and turns? Are the guys going to drop a quinjet worth of spoilers? FIND OUT in the brand new episode, recorded before and after the show.

That’s right – it’s a truck, er, I mean a Jeep episode! We talk about the movie in non-spoiler ways, what we liked about it, what we didn’t, and it we felt it was a little too obvious in some places (it was). And then Greg remembers he needs a gallon of milk.

So that’s our show. Remember to rate and review our show on your favorite podcast app, take a screenshot of it, and share it with us. It may just be worth your while. Seriously.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 115: Hoss’ Triumphant Return

This week on the Five Heart Podcast (now officially a member of the SB Nation Podcast Network), Hoss Reuter is BACK! And back with a vengeance. There’s talk of boots on throats (looking at you, Colorado). There’s talk of key match-ups and right timing, like getting Ohio State in September instead of November, while hosting Wisconsin towards the end of the season.

We drink Coors Banquet, the chosen beer of Hoss Reuter, and Greg makes plans to go to Champaign in the Fall for another Nebraska/Illinois game.

We talk about Spring Ball and emerging leaders in the locker room. We talk about Tim Miles’ questionable future and why fans are still hesitant to get rid of him.

But mostly, the three legs of the tripod are back and we’re ready to move forward! It’s a red and white freight train, after all!

Nerds United Episode 124: Prelude to Captain Marvel

Finally!!!! Greg let me write this part of the thing…look…does anyone really read this thing? I mean, come on, we spend hours and hours thinking of stuff to write here and for what? OK, you caught me. That is a lie. Greg usually puts some type of thought into it. Me? I just like to ramble until I remember what we just talked about on the podcast. This ole noggin aint what it used to be. Captain Marvel, we talk about that. I bet you probably knew that though from the title. What else do we talk about? Venom…yes…I am starting to remember now. It is all coming back to me. Greg finally sat down and watched Venom. Spoiler alert: he liked it but said that Topher Grace is the real Venom….ok not true, but I forgot to make that joke during the podcast so I had to do it here. We also talk about the Xmen Dark Phoenix trailer and Hellboy Reboot trailer. Geez louise, we talk a lot. Actually not as much as some episodes cause it is Sunday. Friday Greg was a bit tuckered out and….wait, why am I telling this story, just listen to the podcast. Then tell all of your friends to listen, and tell their friends…and so on and so forth. Like, subscribe, rate, review, high five us when or if you ever see us in public. I’ll even take a selfie with you……Just saying. Bye!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 114: Husker Hockey

This week on the show, Greg and JDJ are thrilled to be joined by a special guest, Nebraska Men’s Hockey Club Assistant Coach Reed Fuller.

Using the power of www.huskerhockey.com, Greg and Jon chat with Reed about the Husker Hockey Club, the program’s history and league affiliation, the players on the team, their sweet sweaters (probably the best Husker “jerseys” you can’t buy), the 2018-19 season and the upcoming post-season.

The men’s hockey club is back-to-back MACHA conference champions, plays its home games at Breslow Ice Hockey Center, and does it all pretty much out of pocket by the players.

Reed was great, and even agreed to join us (in spirit) next week for a Coors Banquet as we celebrate the return of Hoss Reuter.

Nerds United Episode 123: Beer, Wrestling, Superheroes

Did you see the news this week from Hollywood?

So it got me thinking – what other super hero movie actors could or should be cast in some professional wrestling biopics. So that’s really the premise of the show.

We enjoy beers from Germany and make inappropriate jokes. The show goes off the rails and Greg’s son says goodnight.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 113: Men’s Hoops with Kade Dohmen

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, we sit down with the newest contributor to join the ranks at Corn Nation, Kade Dohmen. Kade is a UNL student set to graduate later this Spring and brings another youthful perspective to our site.

So we take a little bit of time to get to know Kade and then we talk about the Husker men’s basketball team and the comments made this week by Tim Miles. And what does Kade think can happen (best-case scenario) for the Huskers in the final weeks?

Nerds United Episode 122: Back at the Brewery

It’s Stout Month at 4204 Main Street Brewing Company in our adoptive town of Belleville so we start our episode (and our live video) with some stout brews.

This episode, we talk about a giveaway, a fund raiser (they are mutually exclusive of one another), losing loved ones to heart attacks, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Superman: Red Son, some X-Men, and the DC and Disney streaming apps.

We are just two guys who like beer and BOY HOWDY did we enjoy some today. We also took our first ever on-air caller and we had plenty of laughs.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 112: Valentine’s Night with the Guys

It’s Thursday night with the boys as Greg, Jon Damn Johnston, and Rick Cone discuss the latest issues of the week.

There’s been a lot happening around the Nebraska football program this week, and these topics deserve our attention.

But we also celebrate a Nebrasketball victory – their first in seven games.

And Rick is here to talk about recruiting – and that’s a positive. Rick’s sexy bald brain, plus a lot of people outside of Nebraska’s circle of sunshine pumpers, find that this recruiting class is pretty outstanding.

Nerds United Episode 121: The Podcast that Casts

This week, YOU THE LISTENER submitted comic book characters to Nerds United to have us cast them if we were in charge of Hollywood. We’re not – but we still had a lot of fun casting the following:

  • New Batman
  • Small Green Lantern Corps
  • Moon Knight
  • He-Man
  • Thundercats
  • Clayface
  • Ghost Rider
  • Spectre
  • Neil Gaiman’s Sandman
  • X-O Manowar
  • Lobo
  • Spawn
  • Wolverine

So enjoy the show and the random topics we have ahead of it. Let us know what you think about the show by leaving a review on your favorite app (like Apple Podcasts). And when you do, good or bad, we’ll read them on the show.

That’s it. And remember, Be kind. Rewind.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 111: Nebrasketball Makes Us Sad

This week, Patrick Gerhart joins Greg and Jon “Damn” Johnston to talk about the woes that the Nebraska Men’s Basketball Team has experienced. It’s been six losses in a row, and that sucks. It’s been a season-ending injury to Isaac Copeland, and that’s even worse.

What happens the rest of the way? We don’t know – but we have theories.

Jon mentions Nebraska baseball, because he’s a glutton for punishment. And Greg hypes up 80,000+ tickets sold to the Spring Game and Devine Ozigbo being snubbed by the Combine committee. GOOD TIMES!

Nerds United Episode 120: Topics from a Hat

This week on Nerds United, Greg and Mike take topics from a hat. They wrote the topics down ahead of time but didn’t share the ideas with the other, so part of it is a surprise.

The guys talk about the Avengers and the Justice League, latent mutant abilities, shin splints, bringing back key old-time phrases (“BOY HOWDY!”), Letterkenny, 100 Years, Quentin Tarantino, and more.

Episode 121 will depend a lot on you, as the guys want you to provide superheroes (or villains) you’d like to see on the big screen and they will give their casting recommendations, a la this archived episode way back in October 2014.

So be looking for that post on social media later in the week, as we’ll need some time to do our proper research!

In the meantime, enjoy Episode 120 of the best podcast you aren’t telling anyone about!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 110: Bedding Cattle and Husker WBB

In all reality, I could have published this episode on Thursday and had it BEFORE the Husker women’s basketball team played Purdue.

But I 100% wasn’t that smart. That’s on me. As we got recording, and I said on the show “of course this will drop after the Purdue game,” it was locked in. So apologies and such.

In this episode, Jill Heemstra joins us and we talk about bedding cattle. But let’s face it – we know why you’re all here. To talk about the Nebraska women’s basketball team!

There are plenty of opportunities for this middle-of-the-pack team to make some upward movement before the Big Ten Tournament. But the W’s need to start happening. As I’m typing this, the Huskers are up 62-43 on the road at Purdue. That’s a great start. So we’ll see how it goes for the Scarlet and Cream clad ladies of Lincoln.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 109: Ziggy, Dedrick, and the Royal Rumble

First of all, let me say this…if Devine Ozigbo or Dedrick Mills were in the Royal Rumble, I’d say either of them would win it.

Ziggy had a great showing at the East-West game, will likely get an invitation to the NFL Combine, and could be a third-round draft pick. That’s our prediction.

From the “better late than never” department, we discuss the signing of Dedrick Mills. But that’s not all – as we heard last weekend about defensive back Noa Pola-Gates’ commitment to Nebraska.

Some rather dreary news at the end of the episode, but we’ll let you find that one out on your own.

Nerds United Episode 119: IMDb and the Silver Foxes

This episode is all over the place. But before we get to that, you need to know that this weekend, you can save 20% on your t-shirts at the Jittery Monkey Shop. Get those Nerds United shirts, take a picture, and share them with us.

This week, Mike and Greg talk about Brightburn, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Elizabeth Banks, IMDb, and Mike’s incredibly old sister.

If you need more info than that, you should probably just listen to the show. In fact, you should just listen to the show, period.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 108: The Band is Back Together

Hooch, Hoss, and Jon Damn Johnston are back for the first time in a month and Jon LOVES Nebrasketball. And he doesn’t understand why Husker fans are self-loathing, to the point of self-destructive. It’s not helpful.

This episode, we get live in-game updates and reactions as Jon and Hoss are watching Nebraska vs #6 Michigan State. From outbursts of laughter to yelling at the television, follow along with the boys on the podcast.

The guys also talk about the College Football Playoff championship between Clemson and Alabama. And the notion of paying $165 for a ticket to the AFC Championship intrigues Hoss.

And Jon asks the question on everyone’s mind…does defense still win championships?

Five Heart Podcast Episode 107: Nebrasketball with Mitch Lohmeier

Well folks, we’re back. Fractured, but we’re back. No Hoss. No Jon Damn Johnston. But we get the Five Heart debut of Corn Nation’s youngest contributor (and hopefully a future Husker), Mitch Lohmeier.

Mitch covers Nebrasketball for CN and was recently accepted by UNL’s broadcasting school. No pressure. But he’ll do great wherever he goes. The only hang-up about this episode is a poor internet connection, which is rare these days. So we have to suffer through it. But what you get is the shortest Five Heart Podcast episode in some time. And for that, we’re sorry.

Nebraska has a bright second half in store for itself in 2019 if they come out swinging every game. After the win against Penn State this past week, it’s time to start stringing W’s together and making a run for the tournament. No time to take the foot off the gas.

I look forward to having Mitch on again in the future as he has a lot of good info in his head that I’d like to get out when the connection is better. But this week, enjoy a twenty-minute podcast.

Nerds United Episode 118: Aquaman Review and a Lot More

Mike’s back this week and that means good things for you, faithful listener. In Episode 118, we talk about Y: The Last Man, Midnight Nation, Justice League, and a lot more.

Shout-outs to Mike’s mom (as always). And Chad and Mike at Positive Cynicism talked this week about their nostalgia for MTV, and I’ll tell ya, as a couple of guys who graduated high school in 2000…we didn’t have that MTV connection that those old farts had.

And of course, we talk about Aquaman, because GREG ACTUALLY SAW A MOVIE WHILE IT WAS IN THEATERS! And also Greg’s pretty sure that Mike would start his own podcast with friends who could see movies in theaters in a timely manner.

Oh yeah – be sure to check out the store for great merchandise!

Nerds United Episode 117: Podception – Jamie Farr in a Hat

So – new editor here on WordPress. I’m nothing if not stuck in my ways, so obviously I hate it. Much like every new layout of Facebook that gets rolled out, it will just take some getting used to. Hopefully it doesn’t take long to figure it out.

In this episode, I do a run-in on the ABCD-Bags Podcast.

via GIPHY

This conversation starts with comic books like Y: The Last Man and its upcoming TV adaptation as well as various titles from Valiant Comics. Then we talk about the Mandela Effect, Curious George, and Berenstain Bears.

We talk about popcorn and peanut butter, Nebraska athletics, beer, and Jamie Farr. It’s a gem of a podcast, with special shout outs to Mike’s mom (because she won’t listen). Don’t forget to do some shopping at jitterymonkey.com/shop because this podcast doesn’t pay for itself…and it’d be really nice if it did.

Nerds United Episode 116: Very Special Christmas Special 2018

Well, we’re finally here. The weekend before Christmas. And if you’re like me, you are nowhere near ready for the holiday. From decorating to wrapping, yeah – it’s another year of being behind the Eight Ball.

In this episode, Mike and I are joined by our very special guest, Mike’s son Nolan. Nolan brings a youthful perspective that we have long outgrown. But this kid is sharp and quick-witted and not afraid to lay in a few zingers from time to time. And what he did after we finished recording – well, I can’t even explain it.

So enjoy the show. Enjoy your holiday season. and Merry Christmas!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 106: Early Signing Day Recap

After giving Jon a couple weeks off so he could take photos at the regional and national volleyball tournaments, Fearless Leader is back with Hoss and Hooch, and he brought along Corn Nation’s recruiting correspondent, Rick Cone. We recorded the evening of College Football’s Early Signing Day, and the Husker fax machine was busy!

Who’s N? Who’s still on the fence? Who were the big “gets” of the day, as Scott Frost and Co. concluded their first full year of recruiting?

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Husker Women’s Volleyball team and their outstanding showing in what was supposed to be a “rebuilding year.” Looking forward to even more good things from them in the years to come.

POSITIVE CYNICISM EPISODE 71: QUESTION EVERYTHING – ROB KUGLER

Hey there. Greg Mehochko here. I’m taking over Positive Cynicism for one episode. RELAX! Chad Smart and Mike “The Hockey Transplant” DeKalb will be back next time for their WONDER WHY series.

This is a return of Question Everything. Meet Rob Kugler. He’s been a longtime friend of mine. He has done a lot in his life, from serving in the military to trying his hand at acting to taking his beautiful three-legged chocolate lab on a once-in-a-lifetime, coast-to-coast trip over her final months. A happy dog, afflicted by cancer, who had a leg removed.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BAISccpMmjZ/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

We talk about Rob and his military background, love and loss, his trip with Bella, and writing the book that tries to capture everything.

I pre-ordered my copy of the book back in November. I followed Rob and Bella’s trip all along, and I encourage you to check out Rob’s Instagram for some really uplifting pictures, stories, and smiles. Listen to the podcast and if you want more of this tremendous story, I highly encourage you to buy the book!

Thanks for listening. This is at times an emotional story. But it’s also inspirational.

Nerds United Episode 115: Friday Night Thoughts on Aquaman and Marvel

Hey there! Happy Friday night/Saturday morning. Greg and Mike got together and spent a little time on Facebook as well as some audio-only content. We cover Aquaman and the DC Cinematic Universe, as well as the DC CW crossover event this past week titled Elseworlds.

Also, since we last got together, Marvel released trailers for Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame.

Plus we have a special treat from Greg’s early terrestrial radio days, and lots of love for Tom and Jim’s Top 5.

Don’t forget to get your shirts and merch from the shop! Your support is greatly appreciated, and if you did order a shirt, share your merch on social media so we can give you props!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 105: Husker Volleyball Seeking Back-to-Back Titles

Well, we’re not talking Nebrasketball today. But Corn Nation’s Volleyball Guru Ty Peteranetz and I have lots of volleyball talk to get you geared up for tonight’s National Semifinal Volleyball match.

After sweeping their way to the National Final Four, defeating Kentucky and Oregon on the way, the Huskers return to Minneapolis for the second consecutive week, and take on another Big Ten team in the semifinal, facing off against Illinois for the third time of the year.

Ty will be in Minneapolis for as long as the Huskers are there. We wish him safe travels and a long weekend.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 104: Husker Football Moving Forward

In what will probably the first of two episodes this week on the Five Heart Podcast, Hoss and Hooch talk about some of the players departing from the Husker football program and who we (okay, really, it’s Hoss) think will step up in the future to take those spots.

The list goes like this:

  • Interior Offensive Linemen
  • Bryce Benhart at Right Tackle
  • Replacing Devine Ozigbo
  • Replacing Stanley Morgan Jr
  • Defensive Front Seven
  • Inside Linebackers
  • Pass Rush
  • Dynamic defensive Schemes/Calls.

We also talk about the progression of Adrian Martinez, and perhaps what we can expect from him in the future.

Also discussed, a tease about conversations later this week regarding Nebraska basketball and volleyball.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 103: Previewing Husker VB vs Kentucky

On this week’s episode, made available with hours to spare ahead of the regional semifinal match, Greg is joined by Ty Peteranetz to discuss the 2018 Husker VB squad.

How did this Husker volleyball team come together? They certainly weathered the storm of a tough stretch of action in the country’s best volleyball conference. It’s a fact. Of the eight games in the regional semifinals taking place today, six of them include Big Ten teams. Suck it, SEC.

With graduation looming for all-American Mikaela Foecke and others, who does Ty foresee stepping into the top-dog role next year, and who’s already making a name for themselves on this young Nebraska squad?

What did the Huskers do right down the stretch and what do they have to do to win the Minnesota Regional that includes a Gopher squad that has beaten our beloved Big Red twice?

And how is Ty doing as the dad of a newly crowned one-year-old, and how are we handling those odd child smells?

It’s all in this episode of the Five Heart Podcast.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 102: We’re Full of Self-Examination

Well, Nebraska football season is officially over. Time to “Win the Damn Off-Season” as Hoss would say. So in this episode, Hoss, Jon, and Hooch talk a little bit about the game at Iowa. We discuss the season of “what could have been” and what eventually happened.

We talk about the silliness (ie: stupidity) of the Iowa Marching Band Member who lied (I mean, the video evidence is there) and said the Husker football team did not participate in the “Wave” to the patients at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital after the first quarter. It’s a long-standing tradition, cute gesture that Kinnick Stadium fans, the Hawkeyes, and opposing teams have practiced since all the way back in 2017. And Hoss raises a good question (one Jerkeye fans may have to face on Black Friday 2020).

Some Huskers were recognized by the Big Ten coaches and media for the accomplishments they had this season, led by departing senior Stanley Morgan Jr. So the guys go down the list of honorees, and conclude that the future is bright.

Speaking of the future, if you haven’t yet, check out the pinned tweet over at The Five Heart Podcast Twitter and vote in the poll about how Jon Damn Johnston should spend the off-season. Should he be a “rah-rah” sunshine pumper or should he play the role of the old man, contrarian curmudgeon?

Nerds United Episode 114: Post-Thanksgiving

Hello and welcome to a brand new Nerds United. We sure are happy you’re here.

In this week’s episode, Mike and Greg talk about their Thanksgiving weekends and their awesome families. Another of your favorite Marvel shows is leaving Netflix, which we all anticipated. Fuller House is still on the streaming service. But that Disney App is starting to look pretty inviting. However, we’re still pretty sure there’s one 1946 movie that will remain buried in the vault.

Hear Nickelback cover a Metallica song, and hear the guys talk about the Joker movie, and how Mike says the DC Cinematic Standalone Universe is still unproven.

“You’re a wizard, Harry.” Famous words from a famous giant (or giant-like man). But what are some ridiculous things that Hagrid could have told Harry Potter that would have been just as believable (if not just as odd) as telling a ten-year-old boy that he’s a wizard?

Thanks to everyone who has picked up a shirt. Want to be one of the cool kids? Get your shirt here.

Nerds United: Episode 113: Turkey Before Turkey

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!! Surprisingly this is not Greg typing this. It is I, your co-host of the year. You are welcome everyone. Greg said I had to type something out and make it at least 150 words. I said, “No problem my main man Gregorino,” or something to that effect. I guess I should actually talk about the podcast now since Greg is watching what I type…well we talked about Thanksgiving episodes, Stan Lee’s unfortunate passing, high school stuff, Secret Wars, Super Secret Wars (I don’t think that is the actual name of the comic but it works.) Oooh, I should make a comic called Super Duper Secret Wars. How many words is this? This is harder than I thought. Pretty sure Greg will not let me do this again. Ok, 129 words so far. I need 150. By the way, does anyone read this really? And if so, are you single and female? Just throwing it out there.

And buy a shirt.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 101: Iowa Hate Week

This Friday. 11:00am. The turkey is digested. The pie plates are empty.

It’s time to go to war.

IOWA HATE WEEK!

But first: Nebraska used the leg of Barrett Pickering to defeat the visiting Michigan State Spartans 9-6 on a cold and snowy day in Lincoln. Going up against a stiff defense from East Lansing, Nebraska did just enough to get the win on Senior Day.

And then…we talk Iowa. Nothing good about Iowa. Iowa as a state is like Kansas except worse. So Hoss, Hooch, and Jon talk about the rivalry with the Hawkeyes. how long have the hard feelings existed between the two fanbases?

And our Black Friday predictions.

If you enjoy what we do here on the show, consider picking up a shirt from our shirt store. New designs will be coming in all the time, so check it out.

Five Heart Podcast Episode 100!!! Bah Gawd! That’s a winner!

So there I am, watching my niece’s kindergarten basketball game last Saturday morning. You know the type. They have fifteen-minute halves where the clock doesn’t stop. They don’t keep score. And it’s all about going out and having fun. No real rules. I was having a mild anxiety attack as kids were running the ball up the court. But hey, it gives them something to do after farming season (my sister married a farmer and they live in a small farming town…nice town).

So there I am, watching my niece’s game and I’m repping the Big Red. I have my Huskers hoodie on that Brett Baker delivered to me in person three years ago when he and his daughter Jessica went to the Nebraska-Illinois game in Champaign. You remember the one. The one we lost. [Expletive Deleted]. My dad says, not prompted at all, something along the lines of “I’m taking Illinois today.”

I laughed. Not mockingly. Not boisterously. Just laughed. Then after the game, my son and I went to “grandma and grandpa’s” house as my mom made pancakes and bacon for everyone. I watched a little of the game before and after breakfast, then helped my dad do some winterizing stuff outside.

Now I tell you all of that to tell you this. I DVRed the game and started watching it Saturday night. I finished watching it Wednesday evening before we started recording.

In this milestone 100th episode, we talk about the big win over Illinois and why Adrian Martinez and Devine Ozigbo are deserving of their conference accolades this week. We talk about science, but I can’t remember how we got on that topic.

Image result for science gif

And Patrick Gerhart joins us to talk about Nebrasketball’s hot start, including the win this week over Seton Hall!

Jon also has a story or two from his undergrad days and my son looks like he’s going to pee on his bed. So it was a wild and crazy night!

Nerds United Episode 112: HE’S A SKRULL!!!

It is time for a brand new episode, back home in the kitchen of the Nerds United Lair!

But fear not, we’re bringing the spirit of 4204 Main Street Brewing Company (or should we say spirits…we’re drinking) with us.

In this episode, we’re talking about Wolverine: The Long Night, which completed its ten-episode run of season one this past weekend on Apple Podcasts. We also talk about Secret Invasion, Heroes in Crisis, Brad Meltzer’s Justice League run, Superman Red Son, and a lot more.

At the end of the episode, we also give away a copy of The Comic Book Story of BEER!

If you like beer and you like comic books, you will love this book! It’s chock full of great information!

Enjoy the podcast on your favorite podcast app or check out the live stream on the Facebook page!

Five Heart Podcast Episode 99: So Close Against OSU

We already played the “moral victory” card. This was a loss. But hot damn, it was the best loss we’ve seen this team take in some time. It was fun to watch as a game. It was more fun to watch Urban Meyer squirm as the outcome was still in doubt late in the contest. It was really fun listening to 100,000 fans booing the home team as they headed to the locker room at halftime.

Listen, friends. We’re close. Closer than any of us thought. And as ridiculous as it may have seemed a few weeks ago, we still have the possibility of making a bowl game.

Up next: Illinois. And there’s no way the Fighting “We Don’t Know What to Call Ourselves” will win this weekend!

Nerds United Episode 111: Hanging Out at the 4204 Brewery

You read that right, true believers! In this very special “Field Trip Edition” of the podcast, Greg and Mike are hanging out and recording from the 4204 Main Street Brewing Company Taphouse/Production Brewery. In other words, if you’re in Illinois, Missouri, or Kansas and you see a six-pack of a delicious 4204 brew, it was brewed right behind where we were sitting.

We were very fortunate that the good people at the brewery, from the owners to the Head Brewer Keith to Deja the Taphouse Manager and provider of fine ales and lagers, opened their doors to us. Because we like beer. And they have beer. It’s a perfect symbiotic relationship.

So the first thirty or so minutes of the podcast, we were actually streaming and recording live on Facebook. Three people. Two microphones. We’re podcasters, not math geniuses. Anyway, that first half hour was spent with Keith learning all about the beer making process and also trying different beers. You’ll notice in the featured photo that Greg finished his beers. He ended up bringing two growlers home, including the Tickle for his wife.

After we let Keith get back to work, Mike and Greg talk about some comic book topics, including Return of Wolverine, Heroes in Crisis, and Cry Havoc.

There’s a giveaway we’re working on. It is for The Comic Book Story of Beer. Fitting, right? Let’s do this. If you read this, share the post on Facebook. I’ll enter all who do into a random drawing and the winner will get the graphic novel delivered to their front door!

That’s pretty much it. Enjoy the show, and thank you again to Keith, Deja, and everyone who helped make our trip to 4204 Brewery possible!
