My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 85: Support Indy Wrestling

Stride Pro Wrestling

Happy Independence Day. Thanks for checking out My 1-2-3 Cents the Podcast. This week’s show is short and sweet.

It’s a plea to you as fans to support indy wrestling. Over the weekend I had a chance to be a part of two different wrestling shows. I was the ring announcer for a match at Global Force Wrestling when the company was in town for the Grand Slam Tour.

The next night I returned to my post as ring announcer for Stride Pro Wrestling. It’s always a good time doing this, and it’s so important to support indy wrestling. I go into the reasons during the course of the show, so be sure to stick around for that.

As always, please check out the blog (the streak is still alive there). Also, like the Facebook page and follow @my123cents on Twitter and Instagram. Also, follow @kevinhunsperger on Twitter and @kevin_hunsperger on Instagram. I’m aiming for a Pro Wrestling T’s page.

Oh and the name that eluded me during the show is Patrick Brandmeyer. Go follow him on Twitter too (@patrickab7) Sorry your name slipped my mind Patrick.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 84: Diamond in the Rough

brawl at the mall use

Independent wrestling is important in establishing the foundation for main stream companies like WWE, TNA and even Ring of Honor. Men and women toil for years on the indy scene before getting their big break. Some don’t even make it beyond the armories or high school gyms.

I recently spoke with Dalton Diamond, who has been wrestling for several years now. We talk about his training and how he got into the business. Diamond is preparing for a big tag team match on July 2 with his partner Cash Bordin. The two face off against Bull Bronson and Mad Man Pondo at the Stride Pro Wrestling “Brawl at the Mall” in Marion, Illinois.

It’s a big weekend for pro wrestling in southern Illinois. On July 1, Jeff Jarrett’s Global Force Wrestling comes to Rent One Park, home of the Southern Illinois Miners. Kevin Nash, Swoggle and Nick Aldis are among the guests scheduled that night.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 83: Cashing in on MITB

Money in the Bank 2016 is in the books and Dean Ambrose not only won the contract, but the championship on the same night. Although WWE touted this as the “greatest Money in the Bank of all time!” Kevin and Chad tend to disagree. This week the dynamic duo breaks down the event and shares their thoughts on the pay per view.

Jeff Jarrett Kevin HunspergerOver on the My 1-2-3 Cents YouTube channel, Kevin has a new interview up with Jeff Jarrett from Global Force Wrestling. The company will be at Rent One Park in Marion, Illinois on Friday, July 1. You can get ticket info here.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 82: World’s Strongest Camper

mark henry camp WWE
Mark Henry

If you haven’t checked out Camp WWE on the WWE Network, you’re missing out. I’ll be the first to admit, I’d never watched anything on Adult Swim before so I was leery about watching the show. Much to my surprise I enjoy it.

After tweeting about my enjoyment of the show, one of Camp WWE’s writers and one of the stars liked and commented on my post. I took this as an opportunity to invite them to be on the podcast. Actor Evan Michael Lee (@Evanmichaellee) accepted my invitation. He is the voice of Mark Henry.

We discuss the show and how he landed the role. As you might expect, Lee is also a big wrestling fan. He offers his picks for Money in the Bank too.

If you want to hear more about Money in the Bank, head to the My 1-2-3 Cents Facebook page. There was a live event where Chad and I discuss the upcoming show along with some of our friends.

Don’t forget, there’s a new blog everyday on My 1-2-3 Cents, follow on Twitter and Instagram (@my123cents) and subscribe to the YouTube channel. Also my other project, The Craftbeericans, is on all forms of social media. We’ll soon be doing a review of Broken Skull IPA by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 81: Introducing Warrior’s Code Wrestling

Shane Rich 2

Through the years I’ve made a lot of friends in the world of professional wrestling. Shane Rich and I met in 2011 during the All American Pro Wrestling days. Shane is that company’s former heavyweight champion.

He’s also a veteran, which is the inspiration behind the new promotion he’s starting; Warrior’s Code Wrestling. The first show is Saturday, June 11 at Christopher (IL) First Baptist Church. Bell time is 7 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Disabled American Veterans.

In this episode I also talk more about the passing of Muhammad Ali and the impact he had on wrestling and why I think he’s induction into the WWE Hall of Fame is long overdue.

Whether you know him as “Ace” or “Cowboy” Bob Orton is one of the all-time greats of professional wrestling.  The WWE Hall of Famer has had a lengthy career and is still active in the ring. On Saturday, June 4 Orton teams up with Bull Bronson against Dalton Diamond and Cash Bordin at the Stride Pro Wrestling show. Bell time is 6:30 p.m. at CMA in the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion.

In this week’s show Kevin chats with Orton about his career (he was on the first live wrestling card I attended in 1984), the evolution of wrestling and his son Randy Orton.

Hacksaw will be in Pinckneyville, Illinois Saturday, May 14 for a fundraiser show.  You can learn more here.  The legend is also trying his hand at comedy.  You can check out his schedule on his website or follow him on Twitter @OfficialHacksaw

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 76: Payback is a B****

reigns-title-payback
Roman Reigns retains (WWE)

The New Era of WWE is underway and we saw the first pay per view.  Kevin and Chad discuss the highlights and the lowlights of the evening.  Both picked Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn as match of the night and question the “Chicago Screw Job” and the choice of both Shane and Stephanie McMahon to run Raw.

But as the two have said before, WWE is a marathon and not a sprint.  Only time will tell what’s next for the company.  By the way, we wish Enzo a speedy recovery and found this tweet from Kevin Owens awesome.

Nerds United Episode 67: Michael Valentine of “Comix”

Where can you find Stan Lee, Frank Miller, Neal Adams, Mark Waid, and Marc Silvestri in one place?

Comix: Beyond the Comic Book Pages is a twelve-year “labor of love” of Michael Valentine. Valentine relocated to sunny southern California with thoughts of being a musician, but instead started on a journey that would lead him to conversations with some of the comic book industry’s Who’s Who.

Nerds United Episode 66: Lorenzo Lizana Panel

This past weekend was the annual Cape Comic Con in Cape Girardeau, MO. You know this event. This is the comic con I attend each year (this being my third trip in a row). I even took my wife and son.

image

He is four months old and has no concept of who or what R2D2 is…but he likes lights.

One of my highlights the last couple years has been the panel discussions/Q&A’s. This year I was able to record two panels. You can catch the panel with WWE Hall of Famers Terry Funk and “Cowboy” Bob Orton over  on My 1-2-3 Cents.

The second panel was that of comic book artist Lorenzo Lizana.

lorenzo

Lorenzo is Art Director for Lion Forge Comics in St. Louis, MO. He is a staple at the Cape Con, and talks about his life and career in art as well as original characters and his role at Lion Forge.

lion forge

I had an opportunity to visit with Lorenzo later in the afternoon. He showed us (me and my wife) his sketch book for his upcoming comic, Scarab. Lorenzo talked with such enthusiasm about this story to be told that I can’t wait for him to join me for an actual conversation in a few months. Be looking and listening this summer for more Lorenzo on Nerds United as he prepares to release the first issue in August.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 74: We Want the Funk

These two legends held a Q&A discussion, taking questions from the audience. Favorite matches, Cowboy Bob Orton’s Wrestlemania I experience, their favorite ribs, the evolution of the business, and sharing their love of the industry with their family.

Then they took pictures with the fans in the panel before returning to their booth. They held another meet & greet before the Wrestling at the Arena later Saturday evening.

Film Week continues on Nerds United as I talk with filmmaker Hansi Oppenheimer.

Hansi is a kickass fangirl who has filmed the ultimate Fangirl Project: Squee!

So we talk about her background in film, including her father’s job at [Spoiler] and the fact that Hansi has been around and immersed in the culture for years. Punk rock, Doctor Who, The Walking Dead – it all gets covered in this near hour-long discussion.

Hansi is big on fandom, and she’s very supportive of other filmmakers. That’s why she is hosting a screening of Comix: Beyond the Comic Book Pages next month in Queens (which is not Brooklyn…this country boy found out).

comix

What can you do if you want to help make this screening happen? Follow the links above, RSVP on the Tugg site, and help guarantee the showing of Comix. And check out other independent films that might be in your area.

Thanks again for hitting that download button. I have one more episode for you for Film Week. Look for that one Saturday morning.

Speaking of Saturday, I’ll be at the Cape Comic Con where I just learned this week that Butch Patrick (aka Eddie Munster) will be appearing.

Now enjoy my chat with Hansi Oppenheimer!

Nerds United Episode 64: Four Color Triumph

After eighteen months, I can officially say that I have seen Four Color Eulogy, and it is good!

Here’s the same poster next to another comic book movie with which you may be familiar:

This touching independent film features a cast and crew from St. Louis, MO and was shot in the Gateway City. So in Episode 64, I welcome Jason Contini back to the Nerd Dome.

Contini shown with co-star Amy Loui, who plays Chris’ mother.

Jason co-wrote Four Color Eulogy and served as a co-producer. Sit back and enjoy the show as Greg tries not to cry while talking about Four Color Eulogy. The movie had a red carpet premier at Ronnie’s 20 Cine in St. Louis Friday night and was sold out! In fact, they sold out the smaller auditorium and then sold out the larger auditorium.

Four Color Eulogy is playing at least through Thursday (Apr. 14) at Ronnie’s on S. Lindbergh in St. Louis. Two shows a day (2pm and 7:30) with at least one cast/crew member on hand to visit with fans and viewers and answer any questions.

I cannot stress enough how much I encourage anyone to go out and watch this movie. As I stated to Jason, this is a movie that hits you in the feels and one you can (and will want to) watch over and over.

To everyone who worked on this film, from cast and crew to art contributors to local publishers like Stache Publishing who provided comic books for the comic book store scenes, to everyone who had a hand in this project no matter how finite, you have my utmost gratitude.

Now…GO SUPPORT INDEPENDENT FILMS!

Nerds United Episode 63: Comic Con and Wrestling Return to Cape Girardeau

It’s Wrestlemania Sunday and that means we’re only two weeks away from the Cape Comic Con.

Time to visit with my friend Ken Murphy, organizer of the annual event. We talk about the new additions to the event, like Wrestling at the Arena, Trivia Night, a Steampunk Panel, Tea Duel, and more. The Costume Contest, all-day gaming, art show, and Acting Out are all back for another great year.

Here I am talking with Ken Murphy, Cape Comic Con organizer. Thanks to the Cape Girardeau newspaper "The Southeast Missourian" for capturing the moment.
Ken and I when we talked at the 2014 Cape Con. I need a shave again.

I’m looking forward to returning to the event and this year, I’m taking the whole family. As I say at the end of the chat, if you’re in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, or Arkansas…or you don’t mind a little travel for a great weekend, head out to the Eleventh Annual Cape Con. It really is a great time filled with wonderful people. You won’t regret it.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 71: WrestleMania Here We Come!

By Kevin Hunsperger

After taking off a year, Chad and I are heading back to WrestleMania.  We’ll be in Dallas later this week for Axxess, NXT, the Hall of Fame, WrestleMania and Monday Night Raw.  So we figured in this episode we share thoughts on the Hall of Fame Class of 2016 and the card as it stands for WrestleMania.  We also provide a little insight into the show we’re both looking most forward to, NXT: Dallas.

Are you going to WrestleMania this year?  Send us a message on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (@my123cents) or you can reach out to me on Twitter (@kevinhunsperger) or Instagram (@kevin_hunsperger).  I’m planning to use the Facebook live feature on the My 1-2-3 Cents page throughout the weekend (no illegal streaming will be done).

You can also check out our MVPs of WrestleMania blog.  Look for new features soon on the YouTube channel as well.

Please rate and review on iTunes and share the show with someone.  Thanks for the support!

Nerds United Episode 62: BvS Dawn of Something New

Per usual, I took in the new comic book character movie on the early night, saving money and minimizing headache.

trinity-1

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

It didn’t disappoint me. Okay, I admit that I stuck around hoping that there would be a post-credit scene. There’s not. I’ve typically gone against the grain in the realm of agreeing with “court of public opinion” ie Internet film critics. Rotten Tomatoes is pretty useless to me. And from Ben Affleck’s own mouth (paraphrasing), they didn’t make the movie for critics. They made it for fans. As a fan, I have zero problem with this.

sam_r4_v11c3_151002_17mj_g_r709f.362886.tif
The Man of Steel had a lot to answer for after Man of Steel.

At the end of the day, if you take nothing else away from this movie, you get a fantastic Wonder Woman, a glimpse at the Justice League (with lighter characters, maybe you’ll see some of that comic relief that you all love in the Marvel movies…#UNDEROOS), and another piece of framework for the very young DC Cinematic Universe.

And you get it all with a little bit of naked (yet tastefully covered) Amy Adams (oops…spoiler alert).

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 70: Shake, Rattle and Roll

FEH8H3dx

The greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time is taking the show on the road.  The Honky Tonk Man has a new interactive show called Shake, Rattle and Roll.  He’s making a stop in Effingham, Illinois on Thursday, March 24 at the Effingham Performance Center.  The show starts at 7 p.m. and you can learn more details here.

I met HTM for the first time in 1997.  He’s the first wrestler I’ve met, so this interview is particularly important to me.  We discuss the upcoming show, and his life in the ring in the WWF in the late 1980s.  He and “Macho Man” Randy Savage main evented several house shows in that era.  The Honky Tonk Man is on Twitter as @OfficialHTM and he has a Facebook page.

Also coming up this week on the My 1-2-3 Cents blog, Chad and I run down our own MVPs of WrestleMania.  Don’t forget to check out @my123cents on Twitter and Instagram.  Like the Facebook page and subscribe to the YouTube channel.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 69: We Love WrestleMania

HERO
Meeting Chris Hero at WrestleMania 26

Ten years ago Chad and I attended our first WrestleMania.  We made a road trip to Chicago for a weekend of wrestling that included a Ring of Honor show, the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony and WrestleMania 22.

For me, it was a dream come true.  I was content with that one trip.  But I also knew if the opportunity came up again I wanted to go.  Luckily for me, it came up again and again and again.  Chad and I have have been to eight of the last ten WrestleManias.  We’re heading to Texas next month for our 11th.

In this episode of the show we talk about our favorite memories and moments.  It’s not just about the ‘Mania.  It’s the fun in getting to each destination, the other events we attend and of course the WrestleMania atomsphere.

Thanks for tuning in and sharing the show.  Read more on the My 1-2-3 Cents blog as well as Breaking Wrestling News.  You can follow @my123cents on Twitter and Instagram and like the My 1-2-3 Cents Facebook page.  And coming soon, new videos to the My 1-2-3 Cents YouTube channel.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 68: An Ax to Grind

ax wins
Ax wins the title

Through the years I’ve had several opportunities to be a wrestling referee, manager, ring announcer and commentator.  For the last couple of years the wrestling scene where I live (southern Illinois) has been on life support.  But now a promotion is changing all that.

CMA Pro Wrestling made its debut Saturday, March 5.  The show featured several talented wrestlers from this region and beyond.  A packed house watched at the CMA Marital Arts Center in Marion, Illinois as the first champion was crowned.

Ax Allwardt beat three other men in a fatal four way contest.  Fan favorite Heath Hatton nearly had the match won after spearing the near 400 pound Frank Wyatt.  But the opportunistic Allwardt interrupted the pin and tossed Hatton to the floor, where the fourth man in the match Tony Flood was recovering after being dropped by Wyatt.

I managed to get a quick (and I mean quick) interview with the new champ.  He talks about his past in the business and his future as the new CMA Pro Wrestling Champion.

Also on this week’s show the winners of our Road to WrestleMania contest.  Thanks to all who participated and keep listening, Chad and I will have more contests in the future.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 67: Xavier Woods Talks Unicorns & Trombones

RAW_1161_Photo_035-3888597090

You may be noticing a theme on the My 1-2-3 Cents Podcast.  Two-third of the WWE tag team champions The New Day have been on in the last couple of weeks.  Kofi Kingston was my guest on episode 65.  This week Xavier Woods is on the show.  Both Superstars were promoting a WWE house show in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Xavier chats about training, his pursuit of higher education and the incorporation of unicorn horns and trombones in The New Day gimmick.  The conversation is short and sweet, but very informative.

If you live in southern Illinois, southeast Missouri or western Kentucky check CMA Wrestling.  Their first show is set for Saturday, March 5 at the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion, Illinois.

Don’t forget Tuesday, March 1 is your last day to enter the Road to Wrestlemania contest.  Listen to episodes 61-66 and answer the trivia question.  Send a message to the My 1-2-3 Cents Facebook page.

Magicians Must Die has already reached its goal on Kickstarter, but you have two weeks to help them attain their stretch goals, and we’ll learn from Jay what those entail.

It’s 2016, but we recorded at my house, so naturally it sounds like the 1950’s. If you can overlook that, you will really enjoy this new episode with three-time guest and my friend, Jay Peteranetz.

And Ty, if you’re reading this, yes, we do give a shout out to Blue Blood Brewing Company in Lincoln, NE.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 64: Breaking Wrestling News

12208573_931661806905663_2157433421786944648_n

I recently was asked to start contributing to the new website Breaking Wrestling News.  A trio of fans put the site together in late 2015.  Greg DeMarco, Mike Bessler and Joe Burgett are the founders of the site.

There are several contributors, covering wrestling promotions around the world as well as MMA.  On this week’s podcast, I chat with Greg about his experiences with the site and some of his memories as a wrestling fan.

He has a very interesting take on what will happen at FastLane and eventually Wrestlemania 32.  We also discuss a few of the past week’s big news headlines, including Daniel Bryan’s retirement, his future with the company and Titus O’Neil’s suspension.  Listen closely, as I ask a question for the “Road to Wrestlemania” contest based on Greg’s thoughts for Wrestlemania.  You can answer it on Facebook.

You can follow Breaking Wrestling News on Facebook and Twitter.  Also, check out My 1-2-3 Cents the blog.  Follow us on Twitter and Instagram (@my123cents on both) and subscribe to the YouTube channel.  I posted a new video this past week and plan to do more soon.

Nerds United Episode 60 – Can’t Think of a Deadpool-Worthy Title

Well it finally arrived – one of the most anticipated movies in recent memory (somewhere between Captain America Civil War and Star Wars the Force Awakens…you think I’m kidding. I’m not kidding).

That’s right…Deadpool.

I caught a Thursday evening showing and as you’ll hear in the show, the movie does not disappoint. The hard R rating is well-earned for several reasons. this is not a movie to take your kids to. Kung Fu Panda 3 is also in theaters. Take them there.

Deadpool is crass, vulgar, violent, and sexual. So obviously, it is banned in China and beloved everywhere else.

This movie is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Betty White gives it four Golden Girls.

deadpool betty white

To quote some Kevin Smith writing, If the buzz is any indicator, that movie’s gonna make some huge bank.”

This movie is better than a gigantic stack of pancakes.

deadpool-pancakes

And that’s saying a lot…because I love pancakes.

Thanks for tuning in. Thanks to my anonymous friend for being a part of the show. Thanks preemptively for sharing it with your friends.

And if you subscribe and review it on iTunes, I’ll love you long time.

Nerds United Episode 59 – James Mulholland

Welcome to a brand new episode of Nerds United. In Episode 59, I’m talking with Irish filmmaker and writer James Mulholland.

Lettering done by Episode 58 guest Micah Myers.
Lettering done by Episode 58 guest Micah Myers.

James’ path to comic book writing is unconventional. Despite writing his whole life, it was just a recent introduction to comics and their characters through the films of Hollywood that sparked an interest in comic books.

Hear James’ story from his “small town” (only 40,000 people, making my town of 7,500 a “village” or worse) to film school. Learn about some common themes in his writing, and the very personal stories from which they are derived.

Be sure to Like James on Facebook and check out his work on Comic Fury. (Definitely check out “Minority.” Great art with a gripping story that I’ve only just begun.)

And if you’re in the social media mood, follow James on Twitter.

Might as well Follow me on Twitter as well. Yes…I tweet.

I also Periscope on occasion, but I’m pretty bad at that. I’ll share that when I have more confidence.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 63: A Conversation with Carriker

CasT5pVW0AAdr5B

Nerds United Episode 58: Micah Myers

After a January off, I’m back with the first interview of 2016.

This episode, I’m talking with Micah Myers, a letterer and occasional writer. We learn about lettering, and we’re all on board that letterers deserve more recognition.

lettering

We also talk about The Disasters #1, an original comic that Micah wrote as well as lettered. Listen to the episode to hear about that story, and support it on Kickstarter here:

You have just under three weeks left to support this campaign. And as I always do, I highly encourage you to support it. But I’m also biased and want to know more about this guy.

His name is Snow Globe. And his head is a snow globe.
His name is Snow Globe. And his head is a snow globe.

I feel like there’s a lot of story left to be told and I’m excited to bring it to you.

So kick back and enjoy the show. Leave a comment here or possibly even a review on iTunes. You are the vehicle by which this podcast drives towards success.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 62: Random Ramblings

wrestlingmokey_final

There’s plenty going on in the world of professional wrestling.  This week, Kevin and Chad talk at length about a few of the things happening.

Awesome Kong has been sent home from an overseas tour with TNA after an incident with Reby Sky in the locker room.  Read more on Breaking Wrestling News.  Could this lead to the return of Kharma to WWE?

The Rock and Lana had quite an exchange backstage at Raw recently.  So much so that WWE issued an apology for some of the things “The Great One” said to the “Ravishing Russian.”  Do comments like that reflect poorly on WWE and their overall treatment of women?

Injuries are plaguing WWE right now. John Cena, Seth Rollins and Cesaro are just a handful of the Superstars out right now.  Kevin and Chad tackle the issue and discuss the fate of Daniel Bryan as well.

Plus, tune in for this week’s My 1-2-3 Cents Road to Wrestlemania contest question.  Send a PRIVATE message on our Facebook page.  Also, I promised a link to Lucha Underground if you don’t have the El Rey Network.  Here it is: Lucha Underground Season 2, Episode 1.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 61: Game On

There’s a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.  Triple H returned to the 2016 Royal Rumble to capture the coveted prize for the 14th time.  Roman Reigns put up a valiant effort, but in the end it wasn’t enough to overcome the Authority and the League of Nations.

Kevin and Chad chat more about the Rumble match and what’s next for Triple H as champ and who he should face at Wrestlemania.  Brock Lesnar, the Wyatt Family and plenty of other Superstars get some love during this show, including the six who made their Rumble debut.  Those Superstars include AJ Styles, who also made his WWE debut at the Rumble, as well as Neville, Braun Strowman, Tyler Breeze, Kevin Owens and Zami Zayn.

The guys also share details about new contest leading to Wrestlemania.  There will be three different winners and prizes include a 3-month subscription to WrestleCrate, a $25 WWE Shop gift card and a Sting prize pack.  Be sure to listen to the show for the first week’s question.

Nerds United Episode 57: Heroes for a New Year

Happy New Year!

I’m here at the hospital in St Louis (I explain in the episode) so I wanted to get you a new show.

I’m talking about heroes…the fictional kind as well as the unsuspecting heroes in real life. They’re in your neighborhood, maybe at your place of business or worship. They may be complete strangers. But they live incredibly noble lives.

Oh, and I mention the fact that I’m reading “The Man in the High Castle,” so here is a trailer of the show, available now on Amazon Prime.

Once more, wishing you a Happy New Year.

Thank you for the ongoing support, and remember you can win FREE STUFF just by sending a “Comics for Beginners” question to nerdsunitedpodcast@gmail.com

Nerds United Episode 56: The Force Shan’t Be Spoiled Tonight

OH WHAT A MOVIE!!!

I had my tickets ordered when they first went on sale. I had this date marked on the calendar for a very long time.

And then it arrived. And it was SO GOOD!

Partially because I had so much anticipation built up for this movie. But also because I saw no less than a dozen people at the theater that I hadn’t seen in a very long time, so that was awesome. We’ll always have Star Wars.

lightsaber passing
My buddy Rob said “the lightsaber has been passed.” Rob is smart.

This movie was phenomenal. And in the fifteen or so minutes, I really think I avoided any spoilers. And that’s what it is all about.

That and the hokey pokey.

My 1-2-3 Cents/Nerds United Episode 55 – Jittery Monkey Crossover Episode

The moment finally happened when Kevin Hunsperger’s My 1-2-3 Cents the Podcast met the same episode number as network founder Greg Mehochko’s Nerds United.

So the lads had themselves a crossover episode, discussing everything from wrestling to Star Wars to rassle-roos and under roos.

More importantly, it is a celebration of sorts. Nerds United  has long been the banner carrier for the network, and while it remains the oldest show still in production (give or take), I think it’s safe to say that we have a new flagship podcast.

A tip of the cap to Kevin for his year of success and best of luck to him and Greg as they continue to bring you fresh, relevant content.

Yes – that means Greg will have to step up his game.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 54: There’s Something About Terri

Terri Runnels
Terri Runnels

Episode 54 is a special one, as it marks the one year anniversary of My 1-2-3 Cents the Podcast.   The first show dropped December 9, 2014.  Thanks to all who have listened and shared the podcast.  It’s a lot of fun putting the shows together.  Also thanks to Greg Mehochko, co founder of Jittery Monkey and host of Nerds United, for inviting Kevin to be a part of the “family.”

The guest this week is former WWE Diva Terri Runnels.  She’s been involved in the wrestling business for more than 25 years and has evolved from her early days as Ms. Alexandra York in WCW to Marlena to Terri.  She shares stories from the early days, her life as a working mom and what she’s up to these days.

Speaking of which, you can catch Terri at WrestleCon during Wrestlemania 32 weekend in Dallas.  She also has a couple of upcoming events in New York and New Jersey.  Keep up with her on her website or social media pages.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 50: Vacant Wins Again

Courtesy: WWE

WWE World Heavyweight champion Seth Rollins was recently injured in a match against Demon Kane.  That knee injury will keep Rollins out of the game for six to nine months.

WWE officials have declared the championship vacant and have promised a new champ will be crowned after a tournament at Survivor Series.  As of the recording of Episode 50, the number of and names of the participants have not been announced.

Kevin and Chad share some of their thoughts on who should be in the tournament, as well as the rest of the card for Survivor Series.

We’ll know more after Monday Night Raw, but until then, listen to this week’s show and share it with others.  Be sure to share your thoughts here as well.

aapw

Kevin reconnects with the former executive producer and promoter for All American Pro Wrestling Chris Hagstrom. The two discuss their time in AAPW and the chances for a reunion show.

Nerds United Episode 53: The Cursed Studio

Well, for about fifteen-and-a-half minutes, the sound quality was what I wanted it to be. And then – right into the tank. Damn. Sorry everyone.

So in Episode 53, I talk about some recommended Doctor Strange reading, Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, and Marvel 1602. And I continue my series of Regrettable Superheroes.

I also discuss some of the television shows and movies going on, like the Flash, Arrow, and Thor: Ragnarok.

Also – i just picked up the following book and am really looking forward to having time to read it.

My 1-2-3 Cents Episode 46: The Man of Tomorrow

If you don’t know who Daniel Eads is you will after today’s show.  Eads is an up-and-comer on the independent wrestling scene who will no doubt find a place on the national stage in the next few years.  He’s billed as The Man of Tomorrow because of his resemblance to Superman and he’s able to do some super things in the ring.

I don’t even know what that means. But I laughed. It may be the medication.

It’s Episode 52 and I’m joined by a comic book fan, creator, follower of all things nerdy, and Moderator of /r/comicbookcollabs, Ryan Burst.

Ryan and I talk about his gig as reddit moderator, writer on Stache Publishing’s Aporkalypse Anthology (see video), father, movie connoisseur, and all-around nerd.

What a great chat with a new guest who WILL be back.

Also – HI REDDIT! Be kind!

Jay has been busy. He’s taking up a second job as an art teacher at another school in Colorado. But he has been to Seattle for the Emerald City Con. he was the featured artist at this year’s Denver Comic Con (his badges were pretty sweet). Nerds United Episode 44: The King Loves Comics

DMC0_RegularCover

My guest for Episode 44 is a musical legend and a member of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. And while we talk a little hip hop, my chat with Darryl McDaniels focuses more on comics, as he is both a lifelong fan and a creator.

Growing up in New York (Hollis, Queens – but you knew that already), Darryl lived in the same city as Spider-Man and so many other icons of the comic book pages. It all played a part in a boy’s early love of comics that he would carry with him for the rest of his life.

In this episode, we listen to the Hellbreak Panel from the Tenth Annual Cape Comic Con that was held April 17-19 in Cape Girardeau, MO. Cosplay is a HUGE part of not just comic conventions, but this culture…this community. So I am honored that Desiree Cosplay agreed to come onto the show. Desiree gave a great panel at the Tenth Annual Cape Comic Con and shared some tips and tools about creating your own cosplay. Then in the after-panel portion, I got a chance to visit with Desiree one-on-one. And while that conversation was supposed to be about cosplay, well…it quickly went another direction.

Meet my longtime friend Matt. He also has a background in radio and took those talents to not one but TWO shows on the Jittery Monkey Podcast Network: GAMER and PoppedCulture.

But Matt is a busy man…a student working on his mass communications degree with a minor in creative writing. So I won’t go into much detail here, as Matt can tell his own story. But check out his Vimeo and Tumblr for some of his creativity.

Here’s his latest short film, as mentioned in the episode:

As promised, a THIRD episode in February. I’ll get back to guests next month, but right now, I’m discussing/rambling about the link I shared recently. I actually have a great appreciation for the reasoning behind that post, but hey, they’re fictional characters. And believe me, I’m not out to look like Superman. I’ll just be happy not looking like the Blob.

MOVING ON…

Marvel’s Agent Carter wrapped up its mid-season run and, dare I say, I want more of it and less of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

And want to save Constantine so we get a second season? I want you to. Join me.

I also discuss Gotham and the Flash and how though they are similar, they are very different.

Nerds United Episode 35

Episode 35 brings with it the return of the Skyped guest, as I visit with Ross Cavins, writer of Barry vs The Apocalypse, A Novel of Epic Proportions. So naturally we talk about that, but also Ross’ days reading Terry Brooks, being inspired by Elmore Leonard, why college beats high school every day of the week, and more. Arrested Development gets discussed a LOT!

Learn about Ross’ interconnected collection of short stories, Follow The Money (inspired by Elmore Leonard himself), and about the Claymore Award. Ross also discusses why he is seeking self-publishing on Barry rather than the traditional publishing route.

AND…Ross had challenged me to an Announce Off…so we have that going for us as well. Just kick back and laugh. This one was a lot of fun.

And I can’t stress this enough…go to Kickstarter and support Barry vs The Apocalypse.

Nerds United Episode 34

Episode 34 is finally here – only two weeks late.

I not-so-briefly describe/review Justice League: Throne of Atlantis. You remember JL: Throne of Atlantis, right? RIGHT?!?

I have to believe that the film took its cues and plot from the New 52 Aquaman story, which is on my to-read list.

Gotham, Arrow, the Flash, and Constantine get some mentions in this episode. Also – and I know I’ve said it before but I’m saying it again – Matt Ryan IS John Constantine and if WB/DC ever makes a Justice League Dark movie, he better play Constantine or WE RIOT!

Nerds United Episode 32

Merry Christmas and Welcome to the 2nd Annual Very Special Christmas Special.

This year I’m bringing back a guest from an earlier episode and giving her HER OWN SHOW! Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for Alice Harvey, pastry chef and artist with the Stache Publishing Crew.

Alice and I talk a little Stache business, but also cinematic and television adaptations of comic book properties. We also talk baking and Christmas memories.

Alice has a sure-fire recipe for all of your holiday gatherings:

Nutella Braid

Here is the recipe:
1/2 tsp. Active dry yeast
1c warm water (not hot)
2 1/2 c all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 Tbsp sugar
1/2 c nutella
1 egg beaten with a Tbsp water to brush over braid before baking

-dissolve yeast in 1/4c water and let sit for ten minutes to activate.
– combine flour, salt, sugar in bowl of a mixer. – when the yeast is bloomed (it will be bubbly) add to flour mixture with remaining water.
– mix on medium speed with the paddle attachment until a dough is formed.
-switch to a dough hook and let mix for another 5 minutes until the dough has formed a supple ball.
-Place in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic and let rest for a half hour.
– remove from bowl and roll the dough into a large circle.
– spread nutella over it.
– roll like a cinnamon roll.
– cut the roll down the middle to form two long strips.
-twist them together into a spiral (they will fan out a bit and start to look like a braid.)
-place the twist into a baking sheet and brush with the egg wash.
-bake at 350 degree until golden brown.

Three days later I’m the proud mother of a beautiful batch of croissants.
